I like the idea of the factory self leveling shocks; I don’t like the $500 price tag per shock. I’ve had good luck with air bag helper springs on my Super Duty so I figured I’d give them a try on the Telluride. I ordered Air Lift kit part number 60904 off Amazon. $97. So far so good. Will update once we put some miles on it.

She gets loaded down pretty good when we go on big trips and I am not a fan of sagging suspension —it throws off the headlights, negatively affects handling, and looks bad. These were pretty simple to install other than cramming them between the coils. I didn’t tell the wife I installed them just to see if she could tell a difference in ride quality unloaded and at the minimum recommended pressure in the bags (5psi)— she couldn’t. 👍🏻
 
I used those on my Sienna (which has a rear end sag issue when towing / heavily loaded) -- they made a pretty significant difference in rear end ride height. I ended up leaving them inflated to 15psi or so, which did make the rear end stiffer in normal driving, but not harsh. The Sienna is pretty softly sprung, so I'm not sure if I would do that with the Telluride. The only thing that gives me pause on these is that they can fail, so carrying a spare might be a good idea. I only had mine for a year, and they didn't fail, but I have heard of people having trouble after several years.

Glad to see you got them to work - I'm planning on installing some myself once I get a chance.

Kind of dated, but are you sure this is kit is AirLift's 60904 kit? I went to look that up on Amazon and on the Air Lift site, which both returned with the kit with the dimensions: 6.25" L x 13" W x 10.25" H. That seems pretty wide for the springs on the Telluride.

Even on Air Lift's site, I see that the dimensions for 60904 are 3.5" Diameter x 7.75"Length

The 6.25x13x10.25 numbers are the shipping box dimensions. It says so on Amazon and on the Air Lift website. Those aren't the dimensions of the insert - that would be ridiculously large. And yes, poster used that kit referenced. It should work fine.
 
I really like this idea. You've inspired me to try it. Right now I can't find a single thing out there to help with rear sag for towing. I am towing a 20' Pontoon, with trailer and loaded vehicle I am around 4000lbs, so with a 400lb tongue weight it shouldn't sag the way that it does. That being said, I hope that these bags can eliminate most of that. Thanks again for the post!

Did you install an air management system or air compressor or did you just mount the inflation fill valve somewhere? If just the valve where did you decide to mount it?

My plan is to install the Airlift kit 60904 that @machtig installed inside the springs with no air compressor just a hidden (but accessible) fill valve as opposed to installing an air compressor and an electrical auto leveling system. Instead I plan use a portable 12v tire inflater that I keep in the rear compartment. My goal is not to impact the normal ride height and feel under normal conditions by keeping the PSI at 5 then adjust as needed up to 35psi to get back to ride height when I haul or tow under these conditions:
  1. have a heavy rear load,
  2. hang stuff off the hitch with a cargo basket,
  3. connect my light trailer and drag the back down with hitch weight so I can get the hitch back to level for my trailer,
  4. if I pull a heavier trailer keep the hitch height constant so a Weight Distribution System can do it’s thing to distribute to the front axle and not be impacted by changing ride height as I drive
I saw that @machtig used existing holes in the suspension to run the air line so it appears to a pretty straightforward install. Since all air bags are somewhat self leveling I think this is a better alternative to the Nivomats because I can set the PSI and not have to rely on weight over the rear axle and bumps in the road to activate the shocks and it’s much more affordable than a more expensive air bag system with separate bags and custom mounts. I don’t see this as any inconvenience because I normally check my air pressure when I haul or tow anyway and this is just a 5th fill point to check. Anyone have any thoughts that might make me rethink this plan? Any suggestions or experiences on where to install the air fill valve?

Does the spring need to be removed or do you slip it in between the coils?

Was there a reason you picked airlift 60904 instead of Air Lift 60909 other then possible fitment issue? that being said would there be a benefit in running the slightly bigger bag in your opinion if you believe it will fit?

I took spring measurements of 3.5” and 7.5” and put it into the air lift website, it keeps recommending the 3”x8” bag instead of the ones you have used here. Just wondering if you are still happy with the fitment or would you recommend a different size?
 
I would go with what I used. I too ran the numbers through the AirLift website and it spit out the numbers fox_6699 quoted. However the website says it is better to go slightly undersize than oversize; the 60904 kit is 3.5"x7.75" which was almost perfect for me.

Installation is fairly straightforward, although squeezing the bags between the coils was a royal pain in the neck. I slathered them up with soapy water and smashed them in there, but it wasn't easy. A lot of cursing involved:ROFLMAO:

Preparing myself for the sweat & cursing that will no doubt follow trying to 'persuade' the bags into the coils. QUESTION - did you run them with the valve pips 'down' or 'up' inside the coils?

I ran mine with the tubing down and just poked a little hole through the rubber piece sitting at the bottom of the coil for it to go through. I believe you can see the OP ran them the same way.

squeezing the bags isn’t too hard if you follow the installation recommendations.
