If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Hi,
My wife and I are currently looking at both the 2021 Telluride and 2021 Sorento. We've no kids and are in our mid 40's. We share a vehicle and live in a city although we are lucky to have indoor garage parking. We currently have a 2013 Mazda CX-5 the original model with the 2.0 liter engine pushing out an almighty 155HP LOL. It does handle nicely and is easy to get around in although our version is as slow as a week week! It has also been very reliable, just routine maintenance through 83,000 miles. We now want something bigger, faster, more comfortable that handles good and is also reliable. I need more space for tools etc. I'm a handyman, my wife doesn't want something "too big feeling" driving around. Again we share a vehicle some compromises will have to be made!

We did test drive a 2021 Sorento SX X-Line AWD a few days ago. Unfortunately given the unbelievable demand for Tellurides we were not allowed to test drive a Telluride (at that dealership and most around us I've since found out!). However we could sit in it, check it out etc.

We are driving Mazda SUV's going back to 2007 so our comparisons are more or less with our experience with Mazda's. Our initial impressions of the Sorento were overall good but we had a a few minor issues.
The positives first: 1) Styling is subjective but we both thought it looks modern and stylish inside and out.
2) The acceleration off the line is fast and out on the highway or at least for us it's fast! (0-60 about 6.5 secs I'm told with the 2.5 Turbo)
3) It's a nice manageable size, not too big but bigger than the CX-5, Rav 4 etc.
4) A lot of safety features standard (like Telluride) and the tech is cool and easy to use.
5) Seems comfortable enough on initial driving, although it really is a 4 person plus 2 small people in this trim. (we would leave the 3rd row done).

The negatives: 1) The dash material isn't nearly as soft to touch as our 2013 Mazda.
2) The ratcheting 2nd row seat arms were kind of flimsy and in our tester one wasn't working properly at all.
3) There's quite a bit of piano black around the gear shifter that will definitely get scratched up over the years.
4) Because the side mirror caps are gloss black (which I liked) there was a noticeable refection in the side mirrors as the inside of the side mirrors is shiny gloss too. They were reflecting chrome trim from the inside onto the mirrors. It was distracting when using the side mirrors on our test drive Kia should have made the inside of the mirror caps a matte finish.
5) The steering feel is lighter than we're uses too but not a deal breaker.

Again some minor(ish) negatives but overall we both liked the 2021 Sorento.

Again we couldn't test drive the Telluride to compare but could check it out. We both thought as nice looking as the Sorento is the Telluride has a more grandeur Look too it and more road presence for sure. It definitely felt roomier especially in width in the cabin. The seats weren't as side bolstered as the Sorento but felt bigger and a bit more padded and comfortable. My wife preferred the cleaner simpler design of the infotainment screen and analog cluster. She thought the Sorento was a little busy and overly laden with "tech screens" too visually distracting! I kinda agree! The cargo area was noticeable bigger too especially with all the seats down. Also the Sorento's second row don't fold completely flat I think the Telluride's did. Fit and finish in the Telluride seemed a little better to us, although the Sorento's is good overall.

Without test driving to compare the two I'd imagine the Sorento to be a bit more nimble, sportier and has punchier acceleration with a a lot more torque than the Telluride. I'd guess the Telluride is a more relaxed comfortable drive with a luxury feeling cruiser type vehicle. The Sorento is very eager to move a bit busy of a drive mybe?

Anyway love to get your thoughts? We definitely want to test drive the Telluride for comparisons sake. If the Telluride doesn't "drive too big" and the acceleration is good around town and out on the highway I think we'd lean towards Telluride! Side note" Love how the Mazda's drive but they don't have an offering for our needs at the moment. The Cx-9 doesn't offer enough cargo room for my work needs.

Have a nice day and be safe!

going to weigh in my thoughts despite not driving the sorento.. i chose it over the following:
bmw x9
jag f-pace (shockingly “cheap” feeling)
ford explorer
ford edge
honda cr-v
jeep grand cherokee

the only thing i drove that was peppier/more fun than the telly was the jeep - that being said it was a SRT pkg and it was almost 100k. didn’t have the same styling or comfort.

i would pick the telly over the sorento based on styling alone. it drives beautifully and i’m sure @DarkMossJustin will weigh in on #sportmodesaturday 🤪

@Alan:

I'm a huge fan of the Kia Telluride and can totally recommend it if you have the space to park it.

You mentioned living in a city and parking in an indoor garage parking spot.

Are there Telly-sized cars in the garage you share with other residents?

If the dimensions of the Telluride aren't going to be a problem for you, get the Telluride.

The engine is proven.

Naturally aspirated V6, 291-HP, 263 ft-lbs. torque will get you and your family around with plenty of power.

Space matters.

Telly has more legroom, overall space for passengers and storage than Sorento.

I checked out a Sorento a couple months ago and they are perfectly fine for a younger couple with no kids, but if you have dogs or car seats, take the car with the maximum space.

Telluride FTW.

Driving:

Telluride is so much fun to drive.

If you like maximum response to your foot on pedal, Sport Mode is there for you. Sport Mode in the V6 Telly gives you a planted secure road-hugging stance and configuration that works really well. When in doubt, Sport Mode.

Comfort Mode is a great default. If you floor it, Telly will kick you into Sport Mode and be more responsive, which you'll need when negotiating city traffic or launching your Telly down a freeway on-ramp to get to highway speed.

Smart Mode is great for 99% of people. I wish I could tweak it a little to get it to kick me into Eco and Sport easier, but it is what it is and most people will be perfectly happy

Eco Mode is great for maximum coasting. If you ever have a nice straight road with a slight downhill, get up to speed then take your foot off the pedal and coast your Telly to MPG heaven. If you have lots of speed traps on said road, don't do this. I have the speeding ticket to prove it. Sport Mode has more "engine braking" so when your foot comes off the pedal, your speed decreases and you won't coast like in Eco.. :)

Snow Mode worked great in the snow and the Lock feature (that only activates under 25mph) made sure I didn't get stuck in the snow for long.

If y'all like the Sorento, go Sorento. I'm a bit OCD with words and a few other things and visited Surriento (Sorrento) Italy once... so the missing "R" would bother me.

Telluride is spelled correctly, so there's that.

It also looks way better than the Sorento.

Tom Kearns and the Design Team at Kia Motors America in Irvine pulled out all the stops to make this Telly good looking and spacious feeling from the inside to the outside.

Body lines are perfect. If you lose the chrome, you lose the lines, so I'm not a fan of NFE for most colors except for Ebony Black or Gravity Gray or Wolf Gray (no choice, automatic NFE).

Dark Moss is the flagship iconic color of the vehicles Kia gave to the press for review and Dune Brown is the exclusive color of the Prestige Package, so you can go either go with design/aesthetic perfection or you can settle for something that's not a Telluride :)

Good luck either way and just get the car you really want because that's the only way you're going to be happy with your purchase!

I owned a 2019 Sorento v6 AWD, I forgot what trim it was ( mid level cloth seats ). I loved the way it drove. Really the only thing I didn't like was it didn't have much ground clearance. My daughter totaled it, or I would have kept driving it.

I test drove another 2019 v6 AWD Sorento before I bought my Telluride. It was a high level trim and was significantly more luxurious than my Sorento was... but noticeably less quiet than the Telluride I had test driven a few hours earlier

So... I bought a 2021 Telluride S AWD a few weeks ago. Even at the modest S trim level it's a nicer ride than the Sorento. Significantly quieter... the Telluride definitely is not as fast or as nimble as the Sorrento. I personally really wanted a little more ground clearance and even though my immediate family is only 3 people I love that the third row is actually usable by an adult ( it isn't really usable in a Sorento). Bottom line for me, the Telluride just made more sense...

Even so, a Sorento is a very nice vehicle...

Thanks so much for your feedback and the video links! There's certainly a lot to consider. Right now I have to find a dealer that has a demo Telluride for test drive!

Thanks for your input, I really want to get this right but I have to test drive the Telluride when a demo becomes available near me!

Thanks for your feedback! I agree the Telluride is more "grand" looking, the Sorento is more sporty in stance. Slight concern over high demand for Telluride leading to some build quality issues with the Telluride as I've been reading through the forums!

build quality issues? :ROFLMAO:

My Telly works just fine.

Engine is amazing, transmission too

The interior is perfect the way it is, passed all inspections and my rigorous testing :)

Dark Moss paint glistens bronze in direct sunlight.

Someone with insider knowledge can probably do a capacity analysis of KMMG West Point for us:

How many assembly lines total: Telluride? Sorento? K5?

How many dedicated to Telluride?

# of shifts?

QA/QC?

Supply chain issues?

Any other bottlenecks besides production capacity?

don’t be distracted by the minor things you see on a forum- remember people are always quick to complain and slow to praise. you will find this on any form, for any manufacturer.

also, i own an f150.... talk to me about recalls ;)

@ashuride nailed it.

For every one complainer on here, there are hundreds of satisfied Telly owners. Model-specific Message boards can skew negative depending on the car.

Ever heard of a status symbol Brit SUV that’s infamous for requiring a lot of expensive maintenance? 🤣
