• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... A while back, there was some good informational exchange in the Forum about re-setting the electronic window sensors in case you ever experience troubles with them not staying closed at highways speeds.

This morning, I basically did the same thing to the lift gate. This is a pretty straightforward fix, just like the windows, but I thought I’d post so my fellow Telly drivers wouldn’t have to dive into the owners manual like I did.

For no obvious reason, my lift gate was trying to open but then stopping after about 1/2” of travel and re-closing. From all appearances it looked to be sensor related and not mechanical. Nothing was in the cargo area and all interfaces were free of debris.

The fix: Manually open the lift gate, then simultaneously hold the lift gate close button and the lift gate door handle switch for 3 seconds. After the confirmation beep, manually close the lift gate. That should reset the sensor back to normal.

No one likes having to dive deep in the owner’s manual to fix something. Thanks for the heads up.

Well, my elation back on Aug 21st of having figured out to re-set the lift gate sensor was a bit premature. My lift gate started acting up again this past week, and now the re-set process is no longer effective. The release switches on the dash and on the fob unlock and release the hatch but it does not open. I’ve already replaced the power lift gate fuse but no change. Unfortunately, I suspect a lift gate motor replacement may be in order.

Anyone else run into this?

The only thing I can think of is to manually position the lift gate at the height you want it to open to, hold down the "close" button on the liftgate for ~3s until it beeps, which will set the opening height to that setting. Then try cycling it again, see if somehow it helps?

I ran into this issue once. It found that my Trunk Mats was in the way and causing it to not function properly. Not sure if there is a sensor that feels for pressure when closing. My trunk mat was off by a bit not sure if that was the issue though. As I tried the 3 sec reset as well and it started to work back normal after.

Thanks for the ideas. No luck so far.

When I push the Open button on the dash or the fob, the lift gate does unlatch and open slightly, but no further. I then have to push it shut manually to clear the indicator on the driver info screen that shows the lift gate to be open. Proximity sensor which automatically opens the lift gate is not functional either. Seems to be a sensor issue or perhaps a bad motor.

Hopefully not the latter. $$

Did you enable smart lift gate in the instrument cluster menus?

So when the lift gate is open is the motor able to shut the lift gate? It does sound like the motor could be the issue.

How about opening the lift gate from the exterior button above the rear license plate then assist the lift gate opening? Maybe the motor needs a little assistance to “realign” things?
