I have now come back four times to my parked and locked Kia telluride ex only to find the lift gate wide open. Thankfully, no one stole anything from the cargo area or anywhere else. Has anyone else had this problem? I just now disabled smart lift gate and I hope that solves the problem. But I cannot figure out how it is getting triggered in my absence. Any ideas?

Smart lift gate is not supposed to open unless the fob is near the trunk end for 5 seconds. If the lift gate is opening when you are far away, that is something wrong with the car, or you or somebody is accidentally pressing the the lift gate button on the fob.

You could disable the smart lift gate function in the cluster menus. If the trunk is still opening on it’s own, you will know it is because the fob button is being pressed.

Looking to cover or replace the KIA emblems on your Telluride? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!

Thank you. Interestingly, I did that yesterday after I arrived home before I read your reply. I went back out to start the car, put my foot on the brake pedal and pushed the start button. The car would not start and gave an error message that I must depress the brake pedal. I turned Smart liftgate back on and the car started. Guess I’m going to the dealer soon.

Very bizarre. Smart lift gate settings should not impact ability start the car.

My Telluride lift gate will only open if I use the fob, stand next to it for 5 seconds or if i hit the button inside the car. The liftgate should be able to open if the car is unlocked and it won't? Anyone have the same problem? I've tried the dealership and they have ignored my requests.

If the engine is running and you are not in park, the lift gate will not open. Is that what you are trying to do?

Does the exterior lift gate button on the rear hatch not work when parked?

Has anyone encountered an inadveratant opening of a smart liftgate while driving? My wife was in our 2020 and driving in a multilevel garage when the lift gate opened on its own, striking an overhead beam and smashing the rear window. Replacing the window with OEM glass will cost $1,000. plus.

Tailgate won't open while the vehicle is in "Drive", even with a button. It certainly won't open on its own.

Our 2023 has been randomly opening while parked and then one day it opened while driving. Dealer replaced the latch, the latch catch and the door module...8 hours later the door opened on it's own in our garage. Honestly, Kia is not a tech company and tried to build a smart car. They made a piece of shit. Had this car for one month and I hate it! Buy something else.

Not to doubt what some posters here are saying, but I wonder how many of these incidents are caused by new owners not understanding how the smart liftgate features work. I personally have disabled the automatic opening feature to prevent an unintended opening while walking behind the vehicle.

Never had a problem with mine. Even walking behind it the tailgate never opened on accident only on purpose.
Same here - there is enough of a delay that you purposely have to stand behind it for a few seconds to activate. For newbies, it is not going to accidentally open just by walking past it so there is no need to disable it. That is not to say that the earlier posters did not have a malfunction, as from their descriptions they certainly did. But on a normal, working system, it is a neat feature.

this is a pretty terrible feature in my opinion. I park in too many tight areas to run the risk of standing behind the car and having the hatch pop open on me.

It's not terrible to a whole lot of people. If you don't like it or are scared of accidental openings, then disable it. Easy Peasy.

I did disable it but I do also think it is a terrible execution and a dumb feature. Too much room for trouble. I just don’t see standing behind the vehicle and wanting the trunk to open to be necessarily correlated.

I'm never just standing behind my vehicle (with my keys in my pocket). I'm either purposely walking up to it to load stuff into the back or I'm walking past it in my garage, which doesn't cause it to open. The only time I can imagine being behind my car is when I'm washing it, and even then I can move out of the way in time to prevent it from opening. It's a great feature when loading stuff in.

Well we are just going to have to disagree. I've had it for going on two years and wouldn't do without it. Example: SO DANG handy when coming out to my locked vehicle at the supermarket with hands full, keys in my pocket, wielding heavy grocery carts.

I would only add that while washing your car, you probably don't have it locked in which case the feature doesn't work.
