• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... Cold start screeching noise

just talked to our service advisor. they had 5 telly's in for the same reason, some even fired a code that helped them diagnose.

the throttle body can build up some moisture when it gets cold like this causing a little frost to build up on the valve that closes/opens the throttle. as soon as this melts off, which is pretty quick, the noise is gone.

in our case and a few of the others he actually heard the screeching noise personally and was aware of it. i showed him the videos and he confirmed that's what he'd heard as well. kia is aware. the new souls did the same thing he said.

unrelated, they got 5 nightfalls in last night. 😀

For sure; the code set points the service department in the right direction. Hopefully they can pass the word around

Great info! Did your dealership take any solution on those, especially the one with codes?

Thanks for the info ! This explanation sounds reassuring. So, it isn't a big problem then ?

Could become a long term problem if the throttle body is trying to set itself to the correct position and it can’t because the mechanism is frozen into position.

Many moons ago when I was still on the farm, we had this problem on our farm trucks during cold Nebraska winters. My dad taught me that cure to the squeeling/screeching noise which was coming from the fan belt was to take a bar of soap (usually Ivory or Lifebouy) and hold it to the inside surface of the belt for four or five sec.....viola’ no more screech. As a bonus, your engine will smell fresher. It worked 60 years ago and I bet it still will.
I agree with the bar of soap it should work.

@yinjiefu06 - my telly also had stored the code when it was -30 below out (not including windchill) - they cleared the code and informed kia of another vehicle exhibiting this behavior. the service advisor expected there to be a software update coming for colder climates where this is happening.

he said all the vehicles he's had in for the screeching all had the same code and it was happening on both soul's and tellurides.

I have the same thing with my 2020 EX. It’s in the shop now for something else. That will be a separate post and I mentioned it to them but told them it has to be a cold start. Will see what they they find or don’t find

I would like to know what the code or number used is so I could direct my dealer to that code.

Mine does this as well.

I’m immune to harsh noises on cold starts having lived in Minnesota my whole life. I’ll keep an eye here for updates, but not really bothered or worried by noises on startup during severe cold, especially when it is not for more than 10 seconds (in my case) on the coldest days we see within the year.

this sums up my feelings on it as well 😀

Thanks for the info. I hope Kia releases a TSB on this issue, but if the noise is caused by frozen moisture on throttle body, a software update can correct this?

I think the thought would be that they would either adjust the throttle position at shutdown to prevent the screech or possibly on startup, instead of closing, open it further ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ i'm not an engineer but those seem plausible 😀

It's interesting that the Soul with a different engine also has such noise, Kia must have design flaw on their air intake/throttle body especially for the NA engines. I was wondering if the Palisade has such problem or not, given the fact that they share same powertrain.

My 2021 telluride is doing the same thing. Does anyone know if this has been resolved?

Interesting that there has been no further comment on this since 10 months prior to your post ? ( and no answer to your quesrtion )

Depending upon what type of relationship you have with your dealer's service department, you could ask them if they've seen anything on it. Or you could try the national Customer Care folks and see if they have any insight. If it ended up being a flash update for the vehicle, that's a pretty low cost thing for them to deliver... as compared to completely ignoring it and seeing some massive class action a few years from know when equipment failures tie back to an issue they were advised of... acknowledged... and chose to ignore.

Pure rampant speculation on my part, but...

OK, as the OP I hate to tell you that nothing has happened, I don't see any TSB about this issue nor any update from other owners. Apparently Kia is trying to ignore the issue since only part of their vehicles is affected by the cold weather. What I can tell you is that Kia is very strict on warranty repairs, I recently have two pieces of plastic trim parts replaced, and I needed to sign paper work for each part the dealership replaced. I guess Kia is not gonna easily admit a problem of which the solution might involve opening the entire intake manifold.

Now we park in a garage so that solves the problem partially though I think it's stupid to say this...

Unfortunately for all of us.....any issue we may be having is going to less easy to get resolved, mainly because of KIA's (and dealerships) focus on the following:

"DETROIT (AP) — Kia 000270, +0.49% is recalling more than 440,000 cars and SUVs in the U.S. for a second time to fix a problem that can cause engine fires. And the automaker is telling owners to park them outdoors and away from structures because fires could happen when the engines aren’t running.

The recall covers certain Optima sedans from 2013 through 2015 and Sorento SUVs from 2014 and 2015."

I ended up starting my Telluride a few times during the past week when temperatures were hitting daytime highs in the -25 to -30 C range, and overnights dropping into the mid minus 30's C. Not plugged in for the block heater to be doing any block heating in advance of startup. Parked inside an unheated garage, so ambient temperatures were still in the mid -20's C range. Absolutely no noise during the four start-ups. I'm wondering is this is an issue specific to a given model year, or a range of production... and later production incorporated a different component or update that resolves the problem? Also, just shy of 14,000 km on the odometer, if that makes any difference as to if it becomes more of an issue with engines that have more hours of runtime on them.
