• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... If anyone recalls I am the lucky guy who went to pick up my brand new ‘21 Telluride at the dealership on 3/20 and the vehicle would not start, it ended up having a dead battery. We went back on 3/24 to pick it up again with the new battery and we lived happily ever after.

Or so we thought...The following day on 3/25 I get a call from the dealer telling me they don’t have the title to the telluride and that they need to stop over my house and pick up my registration paperwork for the telluride and to take my license plates. So a representative of the dealer stopped at my house same day and grabbed the reg, the plates, and put dealer plates back onto the Telluride along with a dealer registration form to put inside the vehicle so that I can legally drive around with it for the time being.

There was no discussion that any of this was a possibility during the sale process. Maybe it’s my ignorance that this sort of thing is typical. I asked the representative who came out to grab everything is this legal to sell me a vehicle without the title and he couldn’t answer, he just said he makes runs like this fairly regularly. They gave me no ETA as to when the title will be available, and when I’ll get my plates and registration back, but said it usually takes a couple weeks.

I live in Connecticut as an FYI. Has anyone experienced this? Anyone know if it’s legal to do something like this on a brand new vehicle sale? I think it’s illegal when it comes to used vehicles but maybe fine with selling new vehicles without the title. Why wouldn’t they wait to have the title in hand before selling and how long do you think it will likely take until it’s rectified? Thank you.

I’m in Missouri so laws may be different. My dealer gave me a certificate of origin. After paying sales tax at the DOR the state issues the title. It is usually received in the mail in about three weeks.

Just so I understand a little bit more. You don’t have a loan or owe any money on the Telluride and paid it off in full?

Yeah how does a dealer sell a vehicle without at least the country of origin paperwork? Dealerships typically don’t have “pink slips” as those are held by the department of motor vehicles.

I’m financing the car through the dealership/whichever bank they go through.

I recently spoke with a family member after submitting this post, he told me this sort of thing does happen and he himself had to have dealer plates on one of his new cars for over a month. So it seems this actually isn’t something I need to worry about. It’s just strange the dealer didn’t put dealer plates on my car from the start if they knew they didn’t have the title.

Did you buy a new or used vehicle?

I'm confused. For clarity, are you leasing or financing the purchase? Is the vehicle considered a new or used car? In either case, (in my state) the title is not in your name, and is owned by the financial institution till you pay it off or acquire according to a lease contract. The dealer obviously messed up the timing of the transaction, and appear to be making it right by offering you the use of dealer plates till things get sorted.

Enjoy the ride.

O don't understand this... if it was a new vehicle the first title should be in your name, not the dealers

Financing / New.

Thanks! I’m enjoying it, it really is a great car.

So the dealership has the country of origin. They don’t register vehicles. When a new car is sold; the country of origin paperwork is forwarded to the department of motor vehicles. At best if you financed; the lien holder has a copy of the vehicle registration that is generated by the department of motor vehicles.

Completely depends on the state. In PA we don't receive a title until the loan is paid off in full. I know other states are different.

A lot of states are that way

In what state does this apply?

In what state does this apply?
In Michigan the person buying the vehicle gets the title, it has the financing company listed as a secured party. Once the loan is paid off, the secured party sends a release of lean.

Thats the problem. Every state is different. In PA, we don't get a title until the vehicle is paid off from the loan company.

I thought that's how it normally is.

In Ok, The Birth Certificate comes to the Buyer, in about two weeks. The Buyer takes the paper work to the DMV for Registration Tax Tag, and then the Buyer receives the Title with the lean holders name included until the loan is paid off.
