• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... Hi All,

I've got less than 400 miles on my 21 SX-P and I've noticed that the auto-sensing wipers aren't working as they probably should. During constant / consistent rain, on the highest (fastest) setting, the wipers will clear once or twice, wait a random number of seconds, then clear again, then wait a TOTALLY LONG, RANDOM time then clear 3 or 4 times in a row, then go back to once every 10 or 20 or whatever seconds. It does this regardless of the speed setting. The windshield view can be completely obscured by rain and the wipers won't come on to clear it - until it's damn well ready to clear it.

Took it to the dealer today and he said that he put a garden hose on the windshield and it worked fine. He also said that a fellow mechanic that had a 2020 that couldn't keep up with constant rain on the auto setting, so he just switched it to manual wipe.

This can't be the way this thing is supposed to operate. I've got a 2017 Prius that does an amazing job of adjusting the wiper speed to accommodate for the level of rain.

They said they'd call the factory engineer folks and get back with me, but I'm not hopeful. I don't think they believe it's not performing as designed.

Thoughts?

Next time it rains, try to get some video of the wipers' activity so you can show it to your dealer. Obviously, do so in a safe manner... maybe get a passenger to help you. (I was just thinking that it was nice when the wipers turned on for me when it started misting today. Sorry this is not performing well on your car.)

Thanks HillCountry. Supposed to rain tonight and tomorrow. Will get the wife to take a video. Also though about using a garden hose with sprinkler attachment to get a good, consistent "rain" across the windshield.

The rain sensor is just behind your rear view mirror on the windshield. Should be close the the cutout you can visibly see where the front camera cutout on the windshield. Aim your garden hose there when performing testing.

In the past another owner said the rain sensor wasn’t installed properly during manufacturing, with the sensor not making full contact against the windshield to be able to sense the rain properly.

More recently another owner went to the dealer service dept and found out the cable for the rain sensor wasn’t plugged in properly from the manufacturer, and by plugging correctly it fixed the problem.

Both of those scenarios required a visit to the dealer unfortunately.

I definitely need to find time to get it back to the dealer for repair. When looking at the rain sensor, I noticed something odd. There is an odd 1/4 circle area that kinda looks like it's not completely pressed up against the glass. With such great reviews of the Telluride and its quality, I'm surprised that this was missed during QA (and the dealer service guy thinks I'm crazy).RainSensor.webp

I looked at mine, didn’t see any gaps like yours. Almost looks like a piece of the sensor is broken off on yours?
