• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... Hey guys. My Telluride EX just arrived. Yey!
I was never a car guy growing up. Never cared much for any. But now it’s different with this new Telly and 3 kids.
Please help me with these questions:
-what does it really mean to break it in in the first 3k miles?
-what fuel should I use? Regular? We live in the desert at about 4,600 elevation. I keep hearing different comments about what fuel to use. I guess the manual says 87octane always.
-we do a lot of boondocking adventures and in my previous cars I always had a spare key on a magnet box taped to the undercarriage. That saved us twice before after we lost the main key on the river or mountain. What should I do with the Telluride? I noticed my main key has an actual metal key hidden. I thought about putting just that metal key in the hidden compartment under the car. But then, I don’t see anywhere in the car to use that metal key in. Not in the door and not inside to start the car. Any advice other then ‘hey just don’t lose your main key when going into the outdoors’ ?

Please help me with these questions:
-what does it really mean to break it in in the first 3k miles? Just drive normally (w/out going over 5k rpm) and you'll be fine
-what fuel should I use? Regular? We live in the desert at about 4,600 elevation. I keep hearing different comments about what fuel to use. I guess the manual says 87octane always.
Use TopTier gasoline whenever possible (87 octane is fine). If not, use fuel injector cleaner at every oil change

Pg 48 of the manual shows how to to use your mechanical key

No, to start the car with a dead remote battery, you just push the start button with the remote itself.

Cool! That helps. Does the mechanical key also works to start the car?

You must have the fob to start the car. The physical key is to allow entry in the event that the car battery or key fob battery has died.

Oh ok. Thanks. Do you know if a keysmith would be able to make me a copy of the mechanical key?

The key looks pretty special. You should just call around your area or ask Kia.

Ok

I always keep a spare battery for the key fob in the glove box. Had one go dead once had to walk to a store to get one. Now I replace every year or so. Better safe than sorry.

That’s a great idea. What kind of battery?
I’m looking at this thing now and I can’t figure out how to open it

No, to start the car with a dead remote battery, you just push the start button with the remote itself.
But how would that work if the battery to the FOB is dead. I’m assuming with a dead battery the FOB wouldn’t send any signal to the car in order to start it. Sorry, I’m pretty new at this.

You can unlock and lock doors from your phone as well...

Congrats! Where are you located?

Vehicle Break-in Process - from Kia Telluride User Manual -
No special break-in period is needed. Following these simple precautions for first 600 miles may add to the performance, economy and life of your vehicle.
- Do not race the engine
- While driving, keep your engine speed between 2000-4000 RPM
- Do not maintain a single speed for long period of time, either fast or slow. Varying engine speed is needed for properly break-in the engine.
- Avoid hard stops, except in emergiences, to allow brakes to seat properly
- Don't tow a trailer during the first 1200 miles of operation

Per the manual, Telluride takes regular unleaded (87 octane or higher) fuel. I would say no need to go for premium 91 octane fuel as Telluride's engine doesn't require that (it's not high-compression engine requiring higher octane fuel).

In some high-altitude areas, you may find 86 or even 85 octane gasoline sold as “regular” grade. At higher altitudes, the thinner air compensates for the gasoline’s lower octane. Short answer is - just look at the octane number at the pump and fill 87 octane fuel whether the label says regular, mid-grade or premium.

When the battery is too dead to send a signal under normal circumstances, there is enough juice to be able to transmit the short distance required from the button

Yeah and not sure if key fob battery dies suddenly? At least, honda used to give me a Low battery warning in my accord. Hope you get such warning here.
