If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... had the car for 6 months and just got rear ended at stop light…looks like it’s not the entire bumper but the grey protecter…. Anyone know the part bc thinking about not going through insurance since I’m not at fault and nothing major.

That’s more of a reason to go thru insurance when you are not the one at fault.
You right but if the person will pay for damages out of pocket and you know it’s nothing major why not go to Kia get the part and get it out on and save the person from dealing with insurance. In this I think it’s good to be a Good Samaritan if you can. I’m not paying though

I would go through insurance, something else you may not even notice or see could be damaged.

That’s gonna be more expensive than you think.

This.

My wife’s Infiniti got hit from behind several years ago. It looked like nothing major, though we knew from the outset that it would need body work due to a cracked bumper cover.

The eventual repair bill — covered by insurance, of course — was close to $10k. Due to impact the car needed a couple of sensors replaced, replacement of the rear wiring harness, calibration, etc. My guess is that the wiring harness would’ve been an easy fix, but on a newish car they’ll just replace it rather than trying to diagnose which wires are broken. I can‘t blame them.

Moral of the story? These cars aren’t like the good old days where accident damage was usually visible. There’s a lot going on under the covers, and we were surprised to find out how fragile some of it is. FWIW, the woman who hit her didn’t think her car had much damage either. We heard later that her bill was also in the thousands.

I love this truck. If I had an Imfiniti I would agree with the luxury price tag. Kia had the part and actually put it on for me. I was shocked it was at no cost. Now that is seevice!

I don't understand why everyone insists you go through insurance. If you get a diagnosis and quote from Kia, why would one care if the person pays for it themselves vs the insurance paying for it? All that matters is that it gets paid for. What am I missing?

I have caused a small wreck before and the person went to the repair shop, got the diagnosis and cost for repair and I paid for it directly instead of filing on my insurance. It was cheaper in the long run for me to pay it myself than have them file it on my insurance. I appreciated the ability to save getting a ding on my insurance and they didn't care who paid it for the repair as long as it was repaired and not at their (or their insurance's) expense.

I'm glad it worked out. The person who should be the most happiest is the one that hit you. You saved them a bunch since it would of been the majority of the deductable after the labor involved from the body shop. Hint, they will charge you much more that $40! Maybe your good Karma will come back to you.

I agree. If the person is willing to pay for it then 100% do it private. Insurance companies are a scam and you rate WILL increase just for being involved even if its no fault. You will then have to call the insurance and fight with them since its a computer application that actually determines your rate based on the data. The only thing you have to be careful for is crappy people. Some people "say" they will work with you and then ... nothing. If you got a police report, then thats great because then if they decide they dont want to help you've got that. Otherwise, I agree with you, go the private route but.... dont be surprised if its not as cheap as you might think. LABOR IS EXPENSIVE... especially in these crazy pandemic times.

my previous car we thought that it was just the bumper, however, with all the sensors there's maybe more damage then you think. Ours was over $5K. At least get it looked at by a garage first before you decide to write it off as just the bumper. Just a thought

If you're not at fault the insurance company can't raise your rates. If they do then switch.

One of my wife's co-workers was rear-ended a couple of years ago by a teenage driver. The dad shows up, says the kid had several accidents, didn't want to go through insurance, the damage looked minor, that he'd take care of it privately without insurance, wanted to skip police report, etc. Co-worker agrees to it.

Co-worker gets a couple of estimates and, like other posters here, damage was more than visible. Calls kid's dad w/ estimates and dad is now saying it was the co-workers fault for whatever reason and wasn't going to pay or provide insurance info. Without the police report or insurance info co-worker was having a hard time getting the kid's dad to pay.

I told my wife and teenagers that, no matter the fault in an accident, always file a police report and get insurance information. Just because you have the police report and insurance information doesn't mean that an insurance claim needs to be filed.

Dude... you need to re-read your message, that was pretty funny. You said... "insurance companies can't raise your rates. If they do then switch"? Of course they can raise your rates, thats the whole point of having 15 minutes or less :)

I was so thinking of that when typing. :)

Another reason for police report & insurance info....my nephew was at fault for an accident. When other driver filed medical bills (refused treatment at scene) and lawsuit weeks later insurance ponied up their lawyers.

Congrats, that part is ~$350 and with labor on top of that you're looking at probably $5-$700 for that little fix there. Pretty awesome of your dealership for sure.

I agree with you. Always file the police report and get the insurance information. Then if they don't pay or can't pay once the estimate comes back, then you can file it on their insurance.
