  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... Thanks for letting me look around here.

So, I'm looking at a Telluride to replace one of my Mitsubishi's. One Mitsu is a '98 Sport with locking rear diff. The other is an '02 full size. Both Mitsu's get me where I need to go and back again. But they are getting some miles (235k and 110k) on them.

I really need a reliable, 4WD/AWD, 4 door with storage vehicle. I'm a volunteer firefighter and EMT with the local fire department. Along with being a member of the county SAR team. When dispatch drops our tones, I need to be able to safely get to the scene, regardless of weather or road conditions. I carry all my bunker gear, wildland gear, pulaski tool, trauma bag, O2 bag, trail pack, water, recovery gear, tools and extra clothing in my rig. In narrowing my search, a Telluride is pretty close to the top of my list. We have Georgia's 2nd highest mountain in our fire and SAR district. We have part of the AT and Bartram trails along with the Chattooga river and Tallulaha gorge in our SAR district.

I'm interested in first hand experience of using a Telluride in snow, moderate off-road or bad weather conditions. When someone has a house fire, chest pain, difficulty breathing, a lost child, an overdue kayaker, etc it's kinda important to reach the scene and do what we can to make things better. I would like to be able to get close to 200k on a rig before starting the process to look for a replacement.

Be safe out there.

Welcome aboard! And thank you for signing up. I'm glad you found us! You've come to the best place online to read all about the Telluride and ownership from actual drivers. :) Look around! There's lots of reading to do...

My 2021 AWD A trim is stock, with all-weather tires now. I live in the snowy New Hampshire and my job takes me regularly through fairly rough terrain through rock quarries and along high-class access or conservation roads. Here is my take on the Telly: great vehicle, more geared for on-road, but capable for most light off-road needs.

The stock tires that came on mine, I do not remember now but I think they were Pirelli Scorpians or something, were absolute trash for anything but dry or rainy paved roads. The first winter with the tires was barely acceptable performance in snow, by the second winter and about 25k miles they were horrific. I now have Michelin CrossClimate2 tires and the difference is night and day. AWD lock is great for winter use, and I use it for muddy or any other off-road conditions too. Obviously there is a snow mode, which I use sparingly.

I have had one warranty issue, a rear HVAC part, but that was taken care of nicely from Kia. Nothing else except regular maintenance now at 54k miles.

If you are looking at the Telluride I would recommend the X-Line or X-Pro trims so you will get a little more ground clearance; the X-Pro will have the best stock wheel/tire combo. I know there is a lift kit out there for the Telluride and plenty of users on this forum have installed it along with beefier tires. You would easily be able to find specs for that setup if you wanted to go that route.

You are correct - the X-Pro for sure would be the best choice for him. He can get that in the SX package as it sounds like he doesn't need all the bells and whistles, he needs more of a utility vehicle. So for the OP, you want to get the SX, X-Pro. The X-Pro will cost you $1000 more but it is what you need.
