If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... I was wondering if some has experience with buying a car out of state ? If a resident of one state , purchases a car in another state , and then has the car shipped to a third state ? What would need to be done in their home state to have all proper documentation ?

just so I understand for example you live in NJ, your buying a car in NY and you want it shipped to PA. Either way the same stuff you would need to do if you bought it in state.

I've done it multiple times. It depends on the state where the dealer is and where the car is being shipped to. Sometimes they will send the paperwork to the DMV for you or sometimes they will send you the MSO and you have to take it into the DMV. Sometimes they collect the local taxes and pay them, sometimes you are responsible for paying them when you register the vehicle. You should get temporary tags from the state where the dealer is located.

Correct . That’s the scenario , just different states . Shipping I’m arranging on my own , I’m registering the car in the state that I’m a resident ( my license and insurance is in that state ) , but shipping the car to the third state .

Thank you . Sorry for my ignorance , but I’ve never purchased a car under these circumstances before . The taxes I’m paying on my own in the tax fee of the car . My state I’m a resident in , doesn’t require emissions testing or yearly inspections , so I’m assuming my car doesn’t need to be present to register it ? I’m assuming the new plates will be mailed to my state of which in a resident in ? Thank you once again for all your help .

With a brand new car and the MSO in hand, there should be no physical inspection needed. Unless you order special plates, they should hand them to you at registration. If not, they will be mailed to the address on the registration. I only had the inspection once with a car I bought in Oregon and registered in CA. They just had to look at the 50 state compliant sticker on it. My current state just requires the paperwork when I walk in if it hasn't been sent directly to them already.

Taxes and registration fees are paid to the state where you register. Doesn't matter where the car is bought from. Don't know about other states, but in California, physical inspection by DMV is still required even for new car since it was bought from out of state. Also, CA requires smog test for out of state cars.

So for out of state dealer (I’m in california). Here are questions I think we should be asking

1. Do they do all paperwork online/mail and ship the car?
2. Do they register directly with CA DMV (so you dont have to deal with it)

Anything else I should be asking?

Totally get it! I bought a car out of state and shipped it too. First, sort paperwork at the state of purchase. Then, back home, handle registration and taxes.
