Engine Replacement

thanks for the vote of confidence! I went to the dealership today to drive an everlasting silver 2023 telly. In love. I hope they can trade for an S with a sunroof bc they didnt have it. Keeping my fingers crossed. And I refuse to pay over MSRP and have found other dealerships not upselling.
Please share what dealers aren't upselling with the community. Most in NY/NJ still are.

It seems like engine problems are not uncommon with Telly owners. Can someone chime in here bc I am seriously starting to get nervous about pursuing buying a Telly. I havent put my deposit down yet but was planning on doing that tomorrow but may have to find something else.
I have a 2019/2020 telluride. Just under 165k. Within 3 months i have had my transmission replaced and now being told i need a new engine. Totally totally unexceptable. I have my vehicle on a regular maintenance schedule. I complained about this earlier and nothing was done and now BOOM.

Like you, we really wanted to love our Telluride. But all of the issues we had, the poor dealership experience, and the lack of customer support, we traded it in and moved to a better manufacturer. Not sure why people stick to Kia, but I can’t help feel like we were duped. At some point, you’ll decide that enough is enough.

Just heard today they are giving me a new engine under warranty. I have a 2020 Telluride and ordered it in 2019. It has 58,000 miles. Started noticing oil consumption issues at 45,000. This has been a 5+ month process and lots of times in the shop. Now I am concerned though- has the oil issue caused more issues that will come up in the future?!

After engine swap, sell and get a new one. then you won't have to worry about it anymore.

Curious if anybody or anybody you know has had to have their engine replaced... and for what reason?

A family member also owns a Telluride (2021)... it started acting strange at idle and while cruising at a steady speed. When they pushed on the accelerator, it would get up and go no problem. They took it in and the initial diagnosis was a misfire on one or more of the rear cylinders. Upon further review, it has been determined that there are actually "scored cylinders." They aren't sure what the cause was. So.... a new motor will be going in.

Just putting this out there to see if others have had the same experience. Thanks!
Our 2020 SX AWD just got approved for an engine replacement. We have 89xxx miles on it and it started knocking a few months ago. Burning 1.8 quarts in 1000 miles. Always maintained at dealer with regularly scheduled oil changes.

Wow it’s crazy how a few people are having engine issues. Hopefully 🤞I don’t run into that issue. But if my engine starts to consume oil guess I’ll report it to the dealer. I have all the paperwork. I’ve always done my own oil changes.

im currently just under 119k
I have a 2020 Kia Telluride with 114,000 miles. Just had a defective oil gasket replaced that wasn't caught on the last oil change 3 months ago which almost completely dried up my oil without me knowing it and almost ruined my car's engine - was leaking without leaving oil when parked bc some kind of pan underneath collects it - only way to know is check the oil stick which is how I found out there was no oil in my car. Come to find out from the tech mgr. there are also tiny pieces of metal detected in the oil! Says these telluride engines start eroding and falling apart after 100,000 miles (just in time for when the warranty expires - how convenient). Told me to start looking for a new vehicle or plan to have the engine replaced shortly. Wish I knew this before I bought a Kia! I had zero issues until it hit 100,000 miles. Now little by little the engine is just falling apart. I would not recommend this car to anyone EVER now! Technician also said engines are falling apart at 50,000 miles on Chevys too. Nothing lasts anymore. :-(

Then you’ll have a new engine (actually Kia uses a remanufactured engine ) and peace of mind for a little while. So look on the bright side. That’s what I am trying to convince myself is that my “new” engine only has about 10k miles on it.

Unfortunately I have heard that doing your own oil changes is a reason for denial of engine replacement. Dealership, yes, local shop, maybe. Handful of recipients from Walmart, doubtful.

Even with the peace of mind that the warranty gives you, who has time to waste going back and forth to the dealership? Not to mention the cost of getting a rental and the fight with Kia to get reimbursed. Not worth it!

Would it hurt to just do 1 oil change a year with the dealership just to have as records and the rest I continue to do. I assume it all just depends how much proof you have of the services being done.

At 46K miles, my 2020 Telluride took the "dump"' cylinders 1,3, & 5 had oil in them and scored. Long Block engine replacement being done. Dealer has had the vehicle since Feb 5...don't know whether it is time to jump ship after repairs or not. Vehicle was flawless up to this point.

I put about 13k miles on mine since the engine was replaced and it seems to be running fine. I check the oil level every couple of weeks and consumption is minimal. I have stuck with a 5k mile oil change interval since.

If you had the original repair done at a dealership they should have a tech line history on it. I would insist they cover it since they repaired the wrong thing to begin with. Depending on your dealership they may or may not go above and beyond for you. Mine currently is.

I have a 2020 with 60,950 miles that needs an engine replacement due to rod knocking. Since I am 950 miles past warranty Kia will not cover it and quoted me $9500. I was trying to make the service appointment before I crossed 60,000 miles too.

Mine started doing the same thing at 82K. Idling hard at stop lights and knocking on acceleration. First they said I needed a new engine. Then they said I just needed new oil filter housing because the gasket blew. It's been fine for about 5K miles. It's just started back with the hard idle and knocking again. Taking it back in Monday. I'll bet we move on to a new engine now. I'm glad it's still under warranty. Also my auto start quit working last time and that was never resolved. Not sure if it was related ot not.

Yes, I have a 2020 same thing happened with mine. As well as it using several courts of oil after oil chang. I could not get an earlier appointment with dealership to have it looked at and and the dealer finally looked at it and says the engine locked up. Now fighting with the warranty company because they a saying this model engine is not the one that is failing as well as not having 2 samplings replaced at 97,00 miles which I had no clue needed to be done. I am so frustrated.
