Anyone buy an extended warranty on the Telluride?

For the record, it can be 3,500 miles.

If you drive in any one of these Severe Driving Conditions

A: Repeatedly driving short distance of less than 5 miles (8 km) in normal temperature or less than 10 miles (16 km) in freezing temperature.
B: Extensive low speed driving for long distances.
C: Driving on rough, dusty, muddy, unpaved, graveled or salt-spread roads.
D: Driving in areas using salt or other corrosive materials or in very cold weather. E: Driving in heavy dust condition.
F: Driving in heavy traffic area.
G: Driving on uphill, downhill, or mountain roads.
H: Towing a trailer , a camper, or storing cargo on roof rack.
I: Vehicle towing, driving for patrol car, taxi, or other commercial use.
J: Driving over 106 mph (170 km/h)
K: Frequently driving in stop-and-go conditions

Any any of the above apply, you should change your oil every 3,500 miles.

The same applies to ALL cars. BMW says 10,000 or 12 months. But if the above applies, then it is 5,000 miles or 6 months.

Here’s the paperwork from the maintenance plan that I was offered. I was told that oil changes were required every 3-4K miles. I questioned this because my BMW was every 10k. He insisted the engine wasn’t as advanced as BMW and still needed to be changed every 3-4k. The finance manager justified the cost of the plan by saying that it paid for itself just in oil changes alone based on the math of needing 5 oil changes a year (1 oil change every 3,000 miles @ 15,000 miles per year). I think he said that each oil change cost something like $100 each, so I’d be getting the equivalent of $500 of benefits every year. This plan would pay for itself in just over 3 years but I’d be covered for 6 years. To be honest, I haven’t paid for an oil change in the last 13 years since I’ve only owned BMW’s that included them at no cost and a Volvo that I got rid of at 10k miles. (Traded it in for the Telluride).

When I got home, I see that the owners manual says oil changes are needed only every 7,500 miles. When I confronted finance manager about this, he told me he said that he only suggested oil changes are needed every 3-4K miles. I responded that we both knew what he says because I questioned it at the time and reiterated the nonsense of needing them every 3-4K.

As you can see from the attached paperwork, this specific plan that was checked isn’t even eligible for oil changes less than they 7,500 miles interval. Even though there is that option for getting them every 3,000 miles. So he was selling me the benefits of the highest premium plan but actually selling me the one with the least benefits, hoping that I wouldn’t notice the difference.

Btw, I never saw this document until I got home. He had me sign an iPad with just a signature box, so I never reviewed this written document. Once I got the car, I was told that printed copies for the maintenance & extended warranty plans were already in my glove box. My bad for not immediately looking at the paperwork. I had a hungry & tired 2 year old with me and we had spent over 2 hours in the finance managers office so I was ready to start the drive home.

I’ve also attached the cancellation form that took over a week for me to receive. It looks like a bad photocopy from a form that was previously used but then used “white out” in the answer lines. It doesn’t even refer to Kia or have the contact info for Fidelity Warranty Services. I filled out the form and saved to PDF, then emailed it a total of 3 different times over a 10 day period requesting acknowledgment of receipt and processing of the cancellation. I sent to the finance manager and copied his assistant plus the General Manager. The last time, I actually sent directly to the GM but NEVER received and acknowledgment that the dealership received it.
So today, I drove the 52 miles to the dealership and found my salesperson who found a finance manager to sign it and gave me a copy for my records. He also asked the GM to speak with me about the service I had received from finance but she refused. He said she simply put the signed form in the box for the office manager to (hopefully) process on Monday.

I’ll post the extended warranty paperwork separately.
Here’s the paperwork for the extended warranty, with the link to the fine print http://jmtc.info/S9881
There was so much wrong with this interaction. The finance manager NEVER mentioned the $100 deductible per item. He also never mentioned that PRIOR AUTHORIZATION needed to be obtained BEFORE beginning any repairs. Who knows how long that would take??

He also lied about what was covered, telling me the replacement cost of the key fob alone was $795 and was covered. The fine print mentions that they will reimburse only up to $400 for a key fob. I’m assuming that there would also be a $100 deductible, so that leaves only a $300 reimbursement in reality.
What a slimy crook this guy is! I can only suggest to steer clear of finance manager Sammy Sheik at Kia of Irvine. And not to expect the GM, Danielle Ortega, to step in and handle anything herself since she won’t respond to my emails or even have the respect to speak with me in person after driving all the way to the dealership.

I understand that. The problem is that he sold me the plan that ONLY lets me get covered oil changes at every 7,500 miles. Even though there is an option to get a plan that allows for intervals at every 3-4K instead. It’s the typical bait & switch technique.

We did. $1k and extended everything bumper to bumper for 125k miles or 10yrs. ABS system or navigation would set me back that easily
Can I ask where you found this warranty? Everything the dealer offered me was at least $2000. Thanks!

I NEVER EVER buy extended warranties. However, I was concerned about the massive amount of electronic tech on the vehicle (3yr 36,000). I ended buying 'The Mechanic' Platinum Vehicle Service Contract administered through Automotive Warranty Services, Inc. 10yr 100,000 miles for $1198.00, which the finance manager claimed was $100 over their cost.

My thoughts were exactly the same as yours in regards to never purchasing an extended warranty, however I was concerned about the “first year teething issues” of a totally new model. This brochure looks like the same general plan that was offered by my dealer since this is also underwritten by Fidelity Warranty Services in Deerfield Beach, FL. But my dealer never told showed me this brochure or told me about the different levels of coverage, he just signed me up for the gold level even though he told pretty much everything would be covered. What is your deductible? I was surprised to find that my plan had a $100 deductible PER item/event.

It's the same, $100 deductible. Only time will tell if I wasted $1,200.00. Doesn't take much to run up a huge repair bill on new cars.

We had the same concerns about a brand new vehicle so purchased the extended warranty. Our premium was $1,366 for the Platinum level with zero deductible. We downloaded the actual contract from http://jmtc.info/S9881. The contract permits the purchaser to cancel within 30 days with no penalty. Cancel between 30 and 60 days results in a modest $50 admin fee. Each state has amendments to the contract.

Yes, I canceled within the 30-day period, although the dealership wasn’t acknowledging receipt of my emails with request to cancel so I had to drive there in person to get the request actually processed. I then called the warranty company the next business day and confirmed that my contract was cancelled. They told me I was getting a 100% credit and it would be sent to my financier, which is BofA and can take up to 6-8 weeks before received.

I go to pick up my Telly tomorrow, did you negotiate this warranty at the dealership?

Along with a couple others here I would be very interested in more info about this warranty. When we closed our deal last night the finance manager tried for an hour to get me to sign up for one of the extended warranty plans. The one with the same coverage as what you show above was priced at $3800. When I declined that he offered me one with a $200 deductible and only 100K miles for $2750. I didn't feel great declining them both, but it didn't feel right either so I walked away torn. I feel SO MUCH BETTER now after reading these posts. I would have been disgusted with myself if I had paid almost $4000 for that 125k 10 year everything coverage after reading this.

More detail please...

Appears to be Fidelity Warranty Services :: Home Page based on a look up of the customer service number in the contract details you linked to... they have a Kia Branded Program...

A copy of your contract page would be nice (redacted for personal info of course), giving the coverage info (time period and miles)

Which dealer did you purchase this from?
-- Do you think they would sell to others by phone?

$1,366 is a good price if the contract is for 10 or more years and at least 10,000 miles per year of coverage (i.e. 10 years/100,000 miles) with the zero deductible
-- becomes a very good price if it's 10 years/ 120,000 miles
---- a great price if it's 12 years/ 120,000 miles

I purchased the extended warranty for $1,200 with $100 deductible after the first 5 yrs. Includes all electronics. Coverage is 10yrs 150,000Km. I also purchase a separate ins. for a complete replacement cost for 7 yrs in case a severe accident with no deductible for $2,000. from Lloyds of London, very reputable underwriters company. Like most you, I think most problems will be with the electronics as this vehicle has several expensive sensors.

Would you share the plan name and dealer who you purchased from with their contact details.

Had a thought... if anyone that reads this has a connection with a Kia dealer who sells the Kia branded ext warranty from Fidelity Warranty - perhaps the dealer might be willing to provide special pricing to the forum members... where the dealer makes a bit less on each contract as a trade off for the forum members being directed to them...

A buddy of mine is in the corporate side of extended warranties (i.e. he is a claims adjuster supervisor)(unfortunately, they don't sell retail) - he says the dealer mark up is 100% or greater (which is why they can first tell you 3,200 and then come down to $2,700 without a lot of arm twisting - because they are still making over a grand). If a dealer would be willing to make his profit a reasonable amount, he might be able to sell a significant number and end up making a lot of $$$.

When I was looking at a Subaru, a forum there had a dealer doing this - he was marking up only $150 and selling almost as fast as he could write them...

Anybody know anybody?

FWIW

My extended warranty was purchased through my dealership, Kiaprotect.ca. And my replacement cost was purchased at the time of my auto insurance through Optium Inc. Also had the front of the vehicle done with clear 3M...front, complete hood, complete front fenders and mirrors, plus the Platinum Paint Protection 60 months warranty for extra $500.

Yes, it is the Mechanical Failure Service Contract through Fidelity. It is for 10yrs/100,000 miles. Platinum coverage with zero deductible. Purchased from Pitre Kia in Albuquerque. Francesca Tafoya is the finance manager at 505-899-4848. I have it in writing that this is a bumper to bumper coverage with no exclusions except normal wear & tear but in reading the actual contract, I'm not so certain. I am waiting for additional clarification.

My extended warranty including electronics is through Allstate 10 yr/125k miles with $100 deductible and I paid $2400. I did find this in my paperwork that Audio/Entertainment are only covered 3yr/36,000 miles.

This would be great! Years ago there was a Chevrolet dealership that was offering the same service through one of the forums I was associated with. I purchased extended warranties from them on two separate occasions at a great price. Again, they would sell them as quickly as they could write them.
