• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... Hi,
I came back from a two week trip and my car (Telluride 2020) won't start. The brake gets hard. It happens randomly, cold or hot weather, maybe one or two days a week. Battery is good, and all other components on the car come on as normal like it is on. Took it to my mechanic and he told me to go to a Kia service center. Did that and they couldn't figure it out. It is hard to replicate because it happens randomly. The brake pedal gets hard and the only thing that works is to press the brake pedal several times and try again. The car eventually starts. Sometimes i have to do this for 5 minutes to get it to start.
Any ideas?
I want to try figure this out and then take it back to my mechanic. I read related forum here but couldn't find answers.
Thanks a lot.

Check here..

Thank you. I read that thread and found no answers helpful to my situation. The person who posted never came back to mention how he solved the problem.

we had this with ours and were eventually able to confirm it was the starter. tapping the starter when it was doing this would make it start immediately in our case, but it was a pretty simple diagnosis. unfortunately it left my wife stranded in a school pickup line 3x before we figured it out as it would start fine, and then when she was stopped, the ASG would kick in and the car would shut off and refuse to go again. needless to say, she wasn't thrilled about that. we have that feature disabled permanently now.

Thank you, I will try tapping the starter next times it happens and see what my mechanic says.
1)Did you experienced the issue with the brake pedal feeling high and hard?
2)I'm not sure I understand the last part about ASG or if this points to a different issue in your case. This only happens to me when i try to start the car, it never shuts off like you described.

Hi @FrankR -

1) Yes, when it wouldn't start the, break pedal would go very firm
2) The auto-stop-go (ASG) enabled, the car turns off when you're at a stop when certain conditions are met. It's possible you have it disabled, or haven't been in a scenario where the engine stops at long stoplight or something. In our case when the car tried to start again after removing our foot from the brake, the starter would fail to start the car and all kinds of weird warning lights came on, but we did have it happen just at the initial start as well as you've described.

Thanks, Mitchkramez, this is very helpful. I'll see if this works for me.
Any other ideas are welcome.

Thank you Mitchkramez.
Those details are helpful. I'll check to see if this the tapping does the same for me and I do have the ASG disable, i did not like the engine stopping at traffic lights or during traffic jams. I'll talk to my mechanic about the starter, he is pretty good. I'm surprised he did not mention this possibility to me.
Any other comments or tips are welcome.
take care,
FR

Thank you again. In my case it was the battery. Strange because it was tested twice (including at the KIA dealer) and they say that was not the issue. Asked my mechanic to go ahead and change it anyway and it is working fine now, this was two months ago.

I am having same issue but only happens when it is very cold out @15 degrees. Already replaced battery and problem returned. Where can i find engine diagram where starter is located?
Thank you,
Greg

Your description of your problem seems exactly like my 2021 EX. Problem started in Dec2024. Happens about 5-10 % of the time. The stop/start feature works only about 10-20% of the time. The dealer has failed to fix this problem and seems baffled by my starting problem.

The instructions say to remove the starter cover after disconnecting the negative battery cable. You also need to disconnect the oil pump connector. The instructions say that you can't repair it if it is a ISG starter: "Do not disassemble the Idle Stop & Go (ISG) type starter as it is not partial-repairable."
