Question About Ordering

We have been been looking for a FWD EX in Gravity Grey for a few months now and finally decided to order one at the beginning of August. At the time, there were none showing up in inventory anywhere near us, so we figured it would be the best route. The dealer we ordered from estimated 6-8 weeks and said that if something showed up in their list sooner that was comparable and wasn't spoken for, we would have the opportunity to buy it instead of the one we ordered. So far, we have been told that the order was submitted but that they are waiting to hear from Kia for status/estimated delivery.

We recently got a call that they had a different color in stock with the correct specs, but we're not interested in the color. Out of curiosity, I did an inventory search and found two that do fit our original specs at dealers less than 50 miles from us. I asked if it was possible to swap vehicles with another dealer and the response was "we have asked in the past but have always been told no" so they didn't seem interested in trying.

This now makes me wonder, is Kia's ordering system set up to re-route "stock" vehicles to dealers to fill orders, or is it completely random? Is it completely unlikely to talk them into trading, if it's the same model in a different color? If our dealer had at least heard from Kia, I'd be less concerned, but at this point I just don't want it to drag on if there are other dealers close by that have them.

Thanks for your input!

I heard that they don’t take orders and some dealers lie just to lock you in to their dealership....

@EvRo,

When you do an online search, many of the vehicles you see are already sold orders, so many dealers won't be interested in doing a trade. They tend to show up online a few days before hitting the lot, or when they hit the lot, then they disappear after the buyer takes delivery. There's a chance that a buyer could back out of a sold order, so I would call the dealership with your preferred color combo and ask to call you if it becomes available - but they likely already have a long wait list. Dealers are unlikely to do a trade with another dealer because they are selling so fast and for above MSRP. There are costs too. Your order will drag on for a while - at least a couple of months for a non prestige trim as the dealer said. Since you ordered in August - maybe by early October?

Orders can definitely be placed by most dealerships. But getting the vehicle allocated to the dealership depends on other factors. Some dealers can't order, and some won't order and just put you on a waitlist. Always ask for a K dealer printout and negotiate price up front.

Well I have called many dealers and most told me Kia is not taking any orders and if a dealer is telling you they are they are lying. It’s very confusing I really don’t know what to believe. I was told dealers are only shipped what Kia sends them.

Dealers are not going to trade vehicles. You have costs involved and risk of damage. Now if it makes sense...sure. Trades just for certain colors or packages will happen when we all have 15-25 of these on our lot but not now. Zero re-routing going on. These are loaded into our inventory months before they arrive. You should stick with whom you have ordered from.

That is a lie. You can order whatever you want. We can help with that if you like?

Thanks for the replies. I expected a wait, it hasn't even been the 8 weeks the dealer estimated yet. I was just getting concerned that the dealer has not gotten any response from Kia yet. Is that just how it works? Do they provide no feedback until the order is further along?

It's unfortunate that their system doesn't re route delivery of dealer stock vehicles that match a special order when possible, seems like that would help speed up the process. Oh well, hopefully it'll be worth the wait.
