Hi all,
I just joined this group and I am really excited to learn from some of the forums I've read! I have been dead set on getting a nicer SUV with a third row since I paid my Equinox off a couple years ago. I have always bought base model on every car I've ever owned and never really cared too much what I drove as long as it was reliable. This time around I wanted something that suited more comfortable travel, two young boys, with some extra room when we have out of town guests or my boys want to do things with friends. Long story short.....I have never put a lot of work into car buying, negotiating, etc. I was considering many different models until I read about the Telluride. I spent loads of time researching and made myself test drive 4 other SUVs so I could make sure I was making a really informed decision. I now know exactly what I want- Telluride S FWD white. I don't need any other bells and whistles. I have no issues driving in snow nor do we get tons of snow nor do I do any off roading so I don't need to spend $2k extra on AWD. On any given day there are about 20 on lots around my city but I've been hard pressed to find a white one that isn't AWD and doesn't have extras added on that I don't want. Anyway, today I decided I was just going to go order what I want and patiently wait. The dealer I went to does a slight mark up over MSRP but said they will not negotiate price because they basically don't have to. He said the cost to order one is the MSRP rate with a $1k rebate with kia financing. He quoted me two different rate terms with a 2.9-3.5 APR. I'm good with all of this....then he tells me what he will give me on trade-in..$1900. This is $2900 under what another dealership (VW) was going to give me on my trade in. KBB shows trade in value for my car as 2,900-4k. Perhaps the $4800 at VW was high (I hear the Atlas isn't selling as fast) but they were knocking off $5k off the price and giving me $4800 for trade in so my experience with the Telluride dealership was disappointing! I said if you can give me $4k for my car (knowing I'd take $3500) I'm locked in. They would not give me a penny more. I don't know if I am naive or what but I would think if they really wanted an easy sale, a customer willing and able to wait a couple months, they would've sealed the deal. I know I can easily sell my car for $5k plus but I've never done that and for $1k I didn't want to mess with it. For a difference of $3k I would certainly consider it now. If I settle for only $1900 trade in the payment goes outside of my comfort zone. I'm thinking of going to another dealership tomorrow and seeing if they can do any better. Any advice? Are my expectations too unrealistic? Thanks!
