Bad Dealer Dealings - List Your Bad Dealer Experience

Yes, that is an issue. But, since the number of allocated Tellurides to a dealer is a function of other Kia model sales, high volume dealers can discount Sorentos and Sportages and end up getting more Tellurides... which they use to "sell from". They know they will sell at MSRP, so they mark them up and hope that someone comes along with a good trade so they can effectively steal the equity and figure out a reasonable payment on a 7 year note. If and when they really want to move them, they'll agree to MSRP, but for now if they start at +10k and end up at +5k after negotiation, it's a win for them.
Everyone shopping for a Telluride needs to read and then reread this. Know the sales tactics and line of BS before you enter these dealerships. I am shocked at some of the mark ups folks are paying for a Telluride. 😳

Fred Anderson in Raleigh, NC is charging $1295 above MSRP while the rest of local dealers are doing at MSRP. They stopped responding once I have brought up what other dealers are offering.

The smart strategy to park your trade-in as far as possible from entrance so that sales people cannot see dress very casually and walk in, see how they would treat you without knowing your profile, they are human profilers, they make decision about you in first 7 seconds, if they are genuine and intersted to make an honest sale they will treat you as any other customer, if you feel that they are disinterested and you cannot even engage the sales person then this dealership is not the one.

When I was shopping for a car about a year ago, I walked into a Ford dealership and told them I was comparing vehicles around the Sorento size. In the salesman's effort to sell me one of his cars he told me that KIA was for people with slow credit. Fast forward 48 hours, the 2019 loaded Sorento SX was sitting in my garage paid in full. There was a scene in "Pretty Woman" where one of the boutique shop assistants treated her like crap because of her appearance so when she was done shopping to her heart's desire at competitors boutiques she went back with her bounty and declared that they had made a Big. Mistake. I'm pretty sure that's not just a Ford thing but it was indeed a $44K mistake :)

Chicagoland - Napleton Elgin Kia

Ordered an EX in August, was told 4-6 weeks. That time comes and goes, checked in with the salesman and he backpedals and says he said 4-6 months, even though I have an email thread that says weeks. Another month goes by, nothing. I decide to hit up a friend out of state who sells Kias and explained my situation. Was basically told they probably got my car and decided to sell it. Forgot to mention they have been selling regular stock Tellurides for $4k over. So I decide to place an order with my friend and see which comes first. I also told original dealer I was doing this. Original dealer finally gets the hint and magically my Telluride is going to be ready “soon”. I received a build notice from my friend’s dealership 4 weeks after ordered. Original dealer tells me the car is coming in 2 weeks before the second one I ordered...3 months later! Told Napleton Kia I wouldn’t be giving them my business. Just took delivery from my friend this past weekend. F Napleton Kia

Oh good lord. I'm working with Napleton. Scared now.

I'm located in San Diego and have contacted all local dealers as well as all the big dealers in LA/OC/Inland Empire and all are still holding to their market adjustments/addendum's (Anywhere from 2k - 10k depending on the dealer) which isn't new information for those that have been following along with the saga that is trying to acquire these cars. However I did want to give a special shout out to Kearney Mesa Kia/Ford (in San Diego) for my recent experience working with them.

Long story short is I inquired online about their availability and was contacted a day later by a rep (Don) who said he would gather some information and get back to me shortly and texted me his contact after the initial contact. After several days of not hearing from him I texted him for follow up and stated that I would like to order and wanted to see if they would honor MSRP on a custom order. He of course balked and said that they couldn't, so I politely declined his proposal to order with the market adjustment. He texted me back several days later and said he would honor MSRP (via text) on an order, so I gave him my requirements and he said he would have his GSM place an order on my behalf (first week of January).

I proceeded to chase him for the entire month of January inquiring about order confirmation proof (using screenshots from this forum showing what I was referencing) and asking questions about their KFOS allocations. He repeatedly assured me that he placed an order with my name on it, but wouldn't answer my questions asking for confirmation (which after being a long time reader of this forum let me know that he was blowing smoke and lying about placing an order). After repeatedly not answering my direct questions I decided to reach out directly to the GSM and he answered my questions about KFOS allotments immediately and confirmed that he hadn't placed an order and that all orders required a $2500 market adjustment. Thanks but no thanks.

I normally wouldn't have even bothered to post this story as unfortunately my story is not remarkable (unfortunately) given the current state of the market, but I wanted to give them a special shout out for lying repeatedly and having little no remorse in doing so.

In summary avoid Kearney Mesa Kia as they lie about placing orders and don't honor MSRP after agreeing to it via direct text with their Sales people.

I almost “ordered” with them. Interestingly there is a salesman from that dealership listed on the good dealers thread who seemed willing to do MSRP and was straight forward in my limited dealings with him. He disappeared for a few days and never gave me answers to all the key questions this board led me to ask so I went in another direction.

The most responsive dealer was Kia Muncie but they had about 50 SXP ahead of me. At least they were very upfront about it. I had a few other dealers that basically said I’d be wasting my time trying to haggle for MSRP because their shops wouldn’t do it. I appreciated that they didn’t waste my time or theirs.

My bad dealer was Parkway Mazda Kia in Kingwood TX. Costco actually directed me to them and they wanted 2250 over sticker plus an additional 1250 for a protection package. After a week of haggling I had them at 500 over MSRP and told them I’d place an order right then for sticker and they balked so I walked. They played the whole “the best I can do is 1500 over sticker” and then came down from that routine. Such a waste of time!

Curious if any of you have while on the phone or in-person told the salesperson that you would call Kia corporate about their shady dealings? and if so what their reaction was.

Waste of time

Dealer to avoid-
Ross Darrow Kia in Waukesha, WI. Basically $6k markup- $1995 paint protection package + $4000 market adjustment. They had a really nice looking black copper SXP but not for $54k...

Be sure to check that window sticker. Some shady dealers out there trying to roll in the increase in price on vehicles built/delivered before the increase. @Jason Fox is that even allowed?

It's the wild wild west. Whatever the msrp says is what is official from factory. If a vehicle increase is labeled outside of the msrp its not legitimate.

Dealer said the price over MSRP was still a good deal because it was less than a Lexus... soo... that makes sense... ?
haha SMH. That argument never wins, "well at least we are less than those other guys"

Wife and I have been wanting to upgrade to a third row SUV. Happened upon the Telluride and have been loving the reviews and videos. A little hesitant since we’ve never bought a Kia before. She currently loves her cx-5. Went to Greenway West Kia in Orlando to test drive one. Black EX model. Loved it. Go to talk numbers he offers us $8,000 for trade in (Carvana offered 11,880 two days ago and it’s paid off already) and sticker price is 44,950. Also before running our credit (both 800+) would only say we could probably get APR of 3.75% when Kia website says 2.9%. We were also putting another $8,000 down.
Said he could take $1,000 off for rebate but Kia doesn’t do rebates AND the low APR offer. Initially tried to tell me that the higher than MSRP price was including the 10yr/100,000 mile warranty.
Really shady and disappointed. We were ready to get one tonight, now I’m thinking we’re ok waiting.

Sorry for your experience. I put most of it down and financed ~7k to get the 1K rebate at 1.75% (plan on paying it off well in advance). If you find one before March 2nd you can go in with those numbers and tell them you either deal with me straight or you don't deal with me at all. I LOVE the vehicle and hope you are able to get one :)

Looking for some feedback from the other dealers in here... Last week we thought we found an available Telluride meeting our specs at a dealer an hour away to learn it was sold and there is a deposit. Said dealer had another one in a different color that he generously offered at 1500 over MSRP, we countered at MSRP and to remove the etching fee which as you can imagine was declined haha. Guy calls us today and tells us that he will come down by 500 off of MSRP, plus remove etching if we come in today to close the deal... Says the people who put the deposit on it decided they liked the other color better but now this specific vehicle is marked as sold in their system for Feb and they have to get it off the lot. Is this legit? Are they trying to hit some number for the month of Feb with Kia? Something just seems off...

Yes, it's very possible that they would want to hit a number for February for an additional incentive from Kia corporate. Hence why they MIGHT be willing to discount to $500 off MSRP. But, I'd definitely ask to speak with sales manager and get that in writing before leaving your house - and have them take a deposit over the phone. There's really no reason they couldn't finalize the sale over the phone and internet - but very few Kia dealerships seem to do this. The risk is that you get there and then sales manager says: "I never signed off on that deal - but while you're here we can offer you $1200 over MSRP." Get a contract first. If they won't do that, then they're probably being a bit shady. Given demand, they probably have 20 other customers waiting in the wings... and could easily sell above MSRP. But, an actual buyer today is worth something!

Would make sense about Feb if it was 2 days ago... I would just get it all in writing via email.. get an out the door to make sure no games are being played.
