• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... LKA not as sensitive as it used to be

Hello all,

Bought my Telluride in July and have been loving it. In February I got a chip in the windshield which the dealership refused to replace under the customer satisfaction initiative because they said it was too small, so I had to file through insurance and got Safelite to replace it. However, Safelite told me I would need to go to the dealership to get the cameras recalibrated. It was clear to me driving home from Safelite that the lane keep assist was functioning differently. I could get completely over in the left lane before it starts to beep at me or try to push me back into the correct lane. Additionally, when going around curves, it used to feel like my steering wheel was “tight“ where I barely had to turn the wheel because it was being turned for me. Now that didn’t happen, if I didn’t turn the steering wheel I’d run off the road.

Went to the dealership to have it recalibrated which I had to pay out-of-pocket for ($500) and then get reimbursed, and it still isn’t right. It feels exactly the same after the recalibration as it did before. With the lockdown I haven’t been driving as much lately as usual, but a few things I’ve noticed in addition to the aforementioned curve issue is that at a red light when I used to make a left-hand turn, it would beep if there was another car making a left turn in the lane next to me, essentially thinking that I was going into that lane with a car there. Now it doesn’t beep until after I’ve completed the turn and the turn signal is off. Like I said the best way to describe it is that the steering wheel used to feel tight before, where I barely had to turn the wheel. Now it feels like it’s been loosened, like lane keep assist is barely there. My tires can go fully over the line before it beeps or vibrates.

Is this something I should bring back to the dealership or is there a setting I can change to increase the sensitivity and get back to where I used to be? As it is right now this feature is basically do nothing and it was one of the big selling points for me on this car.

Thanks!

Bummer. This is a fear of mine as well. Are you sure a setting didn’t get changed? There is a setting to just have it do nothing, just give a warning, or actively control

I’ve checked every setting as far as I know. There doesn’t seem to be a setting that controls how sensitive it is — basically all I see is that it can be on or off.

Did you get standard replacement glass or OEM glass (glass from the car manufacturer)? I read the features you are talking about don’t work as well without OEM glass. I have no idea if that is true or not. I got a chip in the windshield of my Accord that couldn’t be fixed and had to be replaced. I requested the insurance company to pay for OEM so those functions would work properly due to what I had read. I’m thinking there must be some truth to it as the insurance company didn’t give us any issues paying the increased cost.

Yup, it’s OEM
You have every right to ask the dealer to correct it. I would also contact Kia if you don't receive satisfaction.

It sounds like when you are already over the line, that is the lane departure warning. Lane keep assist only works when you are going over 40mph or when you have smart cruise control on. Blind spot monitor doesn’t use the windshield camera, so I don’t think that would be related. If you don’t see the orange light on your side mirrors or on your heads up display if you have one, then the sensors do not detect a car in your blind spot. Also, blind spot monitor does not work when you are stopped or below a certain speed.

I’m not saying that you aren’t right about replacing the windshield might have affected the windshield camera. But you should also know what conditions are required for the safety features to operate.

Blind spot is not the issue. That works just fine. I know that LKA only works over 40 (sometimes 45 for me). But when I am going over 40 and the LKA light is green on my dash, that’s when the problem occurs. I could go over the line before getting any haptic feedback or a beep or a judge back to the lane.

Is it possible that the active mode for the LKA was disabled so that it only provides the beeping and not the steering feedback? There should be an option in the menu. See here.

Also, when in LKA mode from my memory, the vehicle lane crossing indicators start blinking on the dash just as you approach one edge of the right or left lane. I would confirm this is happening before crossing over as you suggest is the case.

Thanks for the thoughts. Active mode is indeed still on. I do get steering feedback, and the indicators blink — but neither happens until after I cross the line.

Sounds like your Lane Keeping is ON - but your Lane Following is OFF.

Lane Follow Assist only works when smart cruise control is active. It is the green wheel icon on the instrument cluster. It doesn’t nudge you in your lane when you are starting to drift past the lane, it is meant to keep you centered between lanes and basically steer along small bends.

Lane Keep Assist is more like what the OP is describing. It is meant to provide some countersteer torque to the drivers wheel when it senses you are drifting out of the lane, but it can also do some steering assist if you are centered in your lane. It’s the green car with two lanes icon in the cluster.

If a malfunction is detected with the LKA system there is supposed to be a message displayed on the dash. Also the icon would turn yellow.

The manual only states to recalibrate the camera after replacing the windshield. Not sure what else can be done. Unless when the windshield was replaced the technician touched the camera lens and got oils or adhesive on it, which would obscure it from seeing lanes clearly.

My telluride has sensitivity settings that you can adjust for how quickly you want it to intervene. I'm sure you've checked this already, but I set mine to the most sensitive and noticed a huge difference in how quickly it intervenes when getting close to a line.

Polakoff states, "Additionally, when going around curves, it used to feel like my steering wheel was “tight“ where I barely had to turn the wheel because it was being turned for me. Now that didn’t happen,"

What I'm trying to say (and my video explains it very clearly), is I'm thinking he is mixed up between LKA and LFA.

Polakoff says "it used to fell tight,... because it was being turned for me, now it doesn't happen" -

The driver assist system that steers the vehicle and keeps it in the center of the lane is LFA (Lane Following Assist) - if LFA was "OFF" and only LKA was on, it would behave like he is describing it, right?

Where/how can I access these? I didn’t see any.

@HockEYE Kia owners manual states LKA does steer for you at above 40mph speeds and you are centered on your lane.

The manual also states LFA only works when you have cruise control activated. Which doesn’t seem to be mentioned in his original complaint.

@Polakoff there are settings in the instrument cluster using your steering wheel controls to turn LKA and LFA both on or off. But for sensitivity that is only meant to adjust Forward Collision Avoidance. There is nothing in the manual that says you can adjust LKA sensitivity.
