Hello everyone. First post here and I'm positive the answers to my questions lie somewhere, but I haven't found them. I've enjoyed reading in here and look forward to sticking around.

We are hoping to buy a Telly in the next year or so. We'll likely wait for the virus to be better under control so we can see where the economy, and we, stand going forward. I have been looking at dealers near us and most of them have shockingly high mark ups. I sent a note to a local dealer (who had a $4000 markup, but after talking, we could probably end up at MSRP) and asked about waiting until 2021 is in production and then ordering what we'd most prefer. His response was:

Kia manufactures cars based on metrics and what they expect demand to be. They keep the assembly lines running as efficiently as possible in order to offer the best value on the cars they make. What this means to the consumer is we can offer more car for the money you spend.

The downfall to this is that there is no such thing as a custom order. Some dealers make it sound like it is possible, while in reality all they are doing is waiting for the closest match to be produced and then taking it in allocation. Meaning, calling first dibs. So, It is impossible to say how long it would take to get the exact car. Yet, we know in advance of about 3 months on cars that are being built. We can put your name on one of those and have it allocated to us before it even has a vin. This scenario is what dealers are talking about doing when they say "order" a car.

I
s that how it works? I thought you could actually order what you are hoping for (we're actually still wishy washy but think we want an EX AWD with tow package but not prestige as we like the 18in tires and would like the bench seat for the second row, no light colored interior and we'd probably want black or grey for exterior).

Thanks for letting me join and for how helpful you all are. I am crossing my fingers that by this time next year I have a shiny new car.

Your dealer is lying... sorry, a lo of them have claimed this. Do a search for their name in the forum and I am sure they will show up in the bad dealer thread. Additionally search for the term KFOS and you will see some threads explaining how the order process works. Basically the dealers are allocated so many Tellurides a month (each dealership is different for what their allocation is), then the dealer enters the trim information they want to order into the system,KIA allocates those trims. That's a shortened version, I am sure @StephenCantrelle or @Jason Fox or another dealer can better explain it or correct me.

Thanks. I still don't understand how that all works, but I found the guy to be on the sleezier side, so I'm not at all surprised to hear he's likely lying. I did a quick search of his dealership (Ron Tonkin) and did see someone mentioned they were way over invoice there.

I sent him a quick email asking about KFOS and here's his response.

KFOS

or

Kia Forward Ordering System

Is essentially a wish list that we fill out asking Kia for certain cars. It is no promise that the car will be built but allows kia to decide which cars need to be built. It is one of the metrics kia uses in order to keep the assembly lines running efficiently.

I agree, the Title of the system is a bit misleading. One of our competitors actually made the same mistake of thinking that it was truly an ordering system, ordered a bunch of Tellurides and pre-sold them to customers. They soon found out that they are only allocated so many Tellurides and there was no way they could fulfill the promises they made to their customers. They had a lot of un-happy customers on their hands and are no longer in business.

Sometimes It is difficult to tell the truth, especially when it is not the exact thing a customer wants to hear. Ron Tonkin Kia and myself take the responsibility to always be transparent and strait forward. Anyone that says they will "Order" you a Telluride is not doing the same.

Thats wierd because literally dozens of people have ordered on here and continue to order to their exact specs. Lol
Find another dealer. GL

Bald faced lies lol. I have a Telluride on order, I called Lucas at Kia of Muncie and he took down the color, trim and options I wanted and I got a screenshot of the exact configuration when he entered it. I'd look elsewhere

Ordered a vehicle to my specs. Got exactly what I ordered.

Move on.

Thanks guys.

Ahh good old Ron Tonkin, not a shock. They're famous on the Ferrari forums for being total sleazebags. Imagine their other shops are run the same.

Crazy that someone like myself from the midwest would ever even know a particular dealer's name that's our on the west coast. There are a few high volume ones you hear about (i.e. Boardwalk, Champion Porsche, etc.), yet the scummy ones you really remember.

Wow. That's pretty telling if you've heard of them a few thousand miles away. Honestly, we had a local Subaru dealer that we loved and the owner sold it (he was in his 90s) and Tonkin bought it. We still get our service done there because we love the guys in the service department, but I've wondered about the sales department and noticed more folks from our area seem to be sporting tags on their Subarus from other dealers (before Tonkin bought this one, everyone bought theirs from the previous owner). Now I may know why.

Hi Kirbo,
We seem to be in the same boat. I suppose it’s understandable that dealers want to take advantage of a hot vehicle, but the markups you’ve described and I’ve seen are out of the question. I believe dealers should make a profit, but a reasonable profit. I’m looking to have a car ordered because the combination is impossible to find: 2020 SX AWD Prestige (Pearl White, Grey Napa) with Towing. Must have extras would be the front skid plate (lots of beaches dirt roads in my area) mud guards, folding cargo tray and cross bars. I’m ready to give up and try out of the area because getting a dealer to write up an order around here is like pulling teeth. Anybody find a dealer they would recommend?

Telluride Lookup Use this tool. You will find it.

In terms of extras, not sure the skid plate truly exists but apparently this place has it: 2020 Kia Telluride Skid Plate (AA031)

Mud guards: Original Kia mud guards Can be bought off eBay for cheaper (there are dealers that list on eBay). I installed them in a couple minutes, a couple screws each and a trim fastener (any idiot can do it without screwing it up... no drilling needed). They look great.

Cargo tray and Cross Bars: People trying to sell them all the time on here for cheap. eBay is another option as well.

Hi Chip,
It looks as if folks really like a few of the sales people that post here including @Jason Fox and another gentleman whose name is escaping me. I'm thinking in the next few months we may just contact one of the guys on here ourselves since the dealers around here have left a very bad taste in my mouth. Good luck!

Thanks raydog,
This is very useful information. I’ll check eBay for mud guards (I have installed them on my wife’s RAV4) and the other extras. The skid plate is showing up as an ‘available soon’ option for under $400. As it stands, I’m going to be into 2021 anyway with a factory order. So far I got one price below MSRP, for Costco members, from Lucas Boehm at Kia of Muncie. That might be tough to beat.

I know what you mean. I called one greater Providence dealer today, offered to email her my build specs, but she wouldn’t give me her email. She asked for mine but never got back to me. Ridiculous behavior. Luca Boehm at Kia of Muncie (Indiana) is a straight to the point guy with a good deal for Costco members.

That's where @Jason Fox works. I think, from what I can gather here, all their employees are straight shooters and it sounds as if it's a dealership thing that they don't gouge on the prices. I mentioned them to my husband today and he agrees that we'll probably just end up dealing with them in a few months.

It's really a bummer that so many folks walk away with a new car they love but a dealership that they hate. It's awful spending that much money and having a terrible experience. If I'm putting down over $40k, I really want to be doing it with folks that don't make me feel skeevied out and angry.

We all know that feeling from crummy dealers, and it’s so unnecessary to treat customers like that. Imagine how they’d feel if their doctors behaved likewise with them; “Your spleen probably should come out, but if you want to do it today, I can throw in a tummy tuck!” ;-)
