Budgeting my first 3 row SUV

What I am looking for my growing family (expecting second kid), is a budget 3 row SUV. I have boiled down to Telly and Palisade as my options. Wife in agreement (dropped Pilot/Highlander/Atlas)

Basic requirement is to have basic safety techs like blind spot monitoring. Cloth seats are ok but fake leather is also fine. Interior black or grey is fine. Needs to be an AWD.

The deals that I have are the following:

Telly
$35270 for LX AWD + Sales tax
Not on the lot but dealer(connected with GSM) is going to get one around Aug. Needs me to put $1000 refundable deposit down to reserve it. Unsure if the $1000 cash back will still be available (if financed via KIA, which is current offer).

Palisade
$33,999 SEL AWD with Convineince package + Sales tax.
Available on the lot to purchase anytime.

I test drove both and I like both but when I first saw Palisade it looked little bigger (just to my eyes, may be the paint work. I am 5'4".) but Telly was feeling that I already own it. Driving it was not much different than my current 2 row SUV. So, I was at ease immediately.

I understand I brought Palisade to this forum, but I hope I have kept the context clear ( I am not trying to compare them but need help to choose a 3 row SUV with good safety features on lower or lowest trim possible under budget).

I will be trading in my current SUV and hoping to get $15k trade-in.

Which route should I take?

With that said you are looking at a difference given both parties give equal trade value of $271. If Telluride immediately put you at ease I would say its close to a no brainer at 1,271 without the rebate but given the chance is slim to none the rebate will go away for $271 you go with the Telluride.

It's often not on Kia's public website. But, it is part of the "Dealers Choice" financing program which can add at least 100bp to lowest rate offer.

I think you can negotiate heavily on the Palisade. Decide which features are most important - an SEL with Convenience Package is better optioned than an LX I believe. That price for Telluride looks a little high - is there a markup?

No markup. But includes destination. And it's an AWD.

Palisade original price with these options were listed at 39k and there is a dealer discount of 5k and offering at 34k. Do you think I can further ask for more?

A discount of $5k is pretty good - beats the marked up LX with a measly $1k finance rebate. The Palisade is a fine vehicle- esp with the Convenience package.

You probably can't ask for more from that dealer, but you can shop other dealers to see if they can beat it - if you want to.

That is correct. However I am worried about the uncertainty around Telly. If dealer doesn't get it then I get my money back but I also lost 3 months and approaching any offer in the meantime. Why KIA doesn't make more Telly's :-(.

You can wait for 2 months? At this point I would try to get a deal on the Palisade. You can drive it home today! They are essentially the same vehicle, plus it comes with the remote start on the key FOB and their "blue link" internet access is complimentary for 3 years. Kia screwed us big time, no key FOB remote start and their lousy remote app is complimentary for only 1 year. They cut you off on your anniversary, no discounted offers or any attempt to keep you as a UVO customer!

EDIT: This is wrong....Lower Trim apparently is Halogen. Also, I believe all Palisade come with LED headlights. Only the SX(-P) come with LED headlights. The halogen headlights on the rest of the trims are not really good!

Yes, I was also concerned about one of the safety features that is not present in the lower trim like SEL on the Palisade but available on Telly even on LX trim. I think it's called Highway Drive Assist. Not sure how much I will use but if it's a safety feature then good to have it and one of the many reasons I was sold on Telly. They did not reserve any safety feature for higher trims except for the turn signal camera on the instrument cluster.

I went back to research this and read articles around it. This is what I found:

Assuming you are comparing both as 8 passenger options between the Telluride LX AWD and the Palisade SEL AWD w/ Conv Pkg I would say a major thing you get with the Palisade that the LX doesn’t have is the roof rails. If you intend to ever use a rooftop carrier and you don’t have rails your options may be limited. So +1 for Palisade on price and +1 for roof rails. A more applicable apples to apples of the Pally SEL AWD 8 passenger is the T-Ride S AWD with bench seat (newly added option).

Both are great vehicles. I have a Hyundai Elantra and a Kia Telluride and I’m very please with the quality of both.

In terms of safety the NHTSA gave the frontal crash of the Palisade 5 stars and the Telluride only 4. But the rest is the same. In fact the IIHS used the Telluride results for some of the test results of the Palisade in their tests.

The Halogen headlights on the Lower trim Tellurides are debatable. I would not call them bad. They are acceptable by road standards but don’t “feel” as bright. I spent $100 and put in brighter bulbs. But I don’t think that is dramatically different with the Pallisade. IIHS scores the OEM LEDs of both higher than the OEM Halogens. Only the higher Palisade trims get LEDs just like the Telluride. You only get LEDs on the SEL if you get the Premium Package, Convenience Package is halogen based. That said IIHS scored the Halogens on the Palisade a Marginal while the Telluride a Poor. I do think Hyundai makes an excellent halogen projector bulb housing.

I think you are getting a good vehicle either way at this point it’s splitting hairs and you could easy use price and availability to make the decision unless roof rails are a must.

I’m almost positive the EX trim has HDA, it’s not just exclusive to the SX trim. The rest of what you stated in the last paragraph though is SX only I believe.

5K discount is the highest I have heard for the Palisade which is one heck of a discount. And the Palisade is plentiful on dealership lots unlike the Telluride which is very hard to find and a pain to order and then you wait and wait...heck ask for 6k discount.
