California Telly Owners! *tips, recommendations, etc.*

To register in CA, sales tax is either collected by out of state dealer, who forwards to CA, or pay at CA DMV. CA registration fees comes to a little over $600, usually not collected by dealer. Someone posted that smog check may not be required, but don't know it anyone did that. Most people had smog check and DMV did not tell us it's not needed.

Who did you work with over at I-25 Kia? I might go that route for order and pick up in CO... make a road trip out of it.

From other people posting on forum, everyone at i25 is good, my guy was Sebastian Morales. Originally ordered by phone and other communications by text or email. Completed paperwork by email and/or fedex.

Highest volume dealer in CO. Great to work with. Probably sell a lot to CA.

Smog Check is typically not needed on a new car... "Starting January 1, 2019, if your vehicle is less than 4 model years old, you can pay a smog abatement fee instead of getting a smog inspection for the first 8

Hey - who did you deal with at i25?

I spoke with Jonah @ i25 (303 550 8096). Ordered one yesterday process was pretty easy. I am in AZ and will road trip it back too.

I see that you purchased your Telly from i25 Kia. I just placed my order with i25 as well and wanted to ask you about your vehicle registration process. In the past, when I purchased a vehicle in CA, the dealer collects the tax based on my county of residence and DMV registration fees. If I undertand the process correctly, when I buy the Telly from Colorado dealer, i25 will also collect the sales tax based on my CA county of residence and then forward the title/registration paperwork directly to my local DMV in CA. Then when I take my vehicle for inspection and registration, I pay the DMV directly for the registration fees. Is that right? So the only difference is that I am paying the registration fee that is usually collected by the dealer in CA but this time I will be paying the registration fee directly to DMV? I am not clear whether i25 will collect any Colorado DMV registration fees and I end up paying double, once in CO and another when I bring the vehicle to CA.

All of the above is correct, except last sentence.

👉See attached pics. You will get a 60 day Colorado temporary registration, shows no fees for that. Then see the CA DMV registration pic, add up all the fees, it will come to $600, unless the State raised them since then. Plus, the use tax (sales tax), which i25 collects and remits with a check to the CA DMV with the packet they send to the DMV for final registration.

Note: the blue ink correction was done by DMV, as I screwed up my original 343 DMV form. i25 also submits a 343 in their packet as mentioned above.

👉You have 20 days to register in CA, (after the vehicle enters CA) per CVC. CA DMV will issue a 30 day temporary, if the documents are not in their possession by the 20 day requirement and you would have to go back. If you don't attempt to register by the 20th day (which you declare on form 343), fines will occur, this happened to another CA Telly owner....by one day.

KEYS:
●Select the DMV you want the i25 documents to be sent to, tell your sales person the address, reiterate upon pick up at i25. They get a lot of CA buyers and their document person sits on the paperwork (at least for me). I had to follow up with email to i25 after they didn't send docs at my first DMV visit. That prompted next day air delivery to the DMV I had selected, as I requested a tracking number from i25 in my email and texts to my sales rep. Just a heads up on that.

Also, let your sales rep, no i25 emblems, website stickers on your Telly.

Summed it up nicely.

When people buy car in CA, dealer collects tax and fees and handles all the paperwork, you do not need to go to DMV. Registration doc and license plates arrive by mail.

For out of state purchase, dealer usually collect CA sales tax and send it and paperwork to your local CA DMV office. You will have to go to DMV to do the registration yourself, have car physically inspected by them, and pay CA registration fees. If dealer did not collect correct CA tax, you pay or collect the difference for your county.

How long does the process usually take at the DMV? So you didn't actually need to fill out a 343 since i25 sends one? Any docs that you actually needed to fill out and bring to the DMV? Only need to bring a check?

Hour plus. Pretty efficient.

●You can set up an appointment at your DMV. I just walked in (check Google for busy/slow times & days, or generally mornings), since Covid they have set up (at that time) outside check in, then that person distributed people to different secondary check ins, based on what they needed to accomplish.

From secondary check in they set me up for inspection, then back to check in to show passing, then either directly into building for final registration, or take cell # and provide texts of where your number is in line....getting close...come into building, go to window 12 ect.

●I would recommend that you do have a filled out 343 form (Application for Registration), if your docs have not arrived from i25, then they have nothing to work with. Fill out online and print. Basically, its your declaration that the information is true and correct, this is where the entering CA, 20 day requirement comes into play.

👉Things I took with me.
•Colorado temporary registration.
•Form 343.
•Proof of insurance.
•Purchase agreement (shows price & tax)
•Smog inspection (some discussion if this is needed, I did it, electronically sent to DMV, don't know if it came into play.)

I used credit card for any payments.

Does anyone know if Modesto delivers on their 3-6 months waiting period? They charge a 3K markup which is probably the lowest in California but I am not sure how reliable they are especially that their reviews are not stellar.

My other option is i25 Kia in Colorado which is a bit of hassle especially the shipping part. If you have worked with them, could you share your experience with their delivery system? If some damage happens during the shipping, do you know who will be liable? Do they have to send the customer another car or they only pay the cost of repairs?

Appreciate any thoughts/suggestions.
Order 4/23 and delivered 7/13 for me. Lame to see that they increased the markup to $3K though. It was only $2K when I purchased. Wasn't much of a fan of their financing department, but maybe that's just me. I initially tried i25 and worked with Dominic. GREAT service, but unfortunately, my order in Modesto had an earlier ETA and didn't wanna deal with the extra DMV stuff if I purchased from CO.

Yep.

👉In alignment with how other departments process credit and debit card transactions, DMV customers will be charged a 2.3 percent service fee when paying with their card or digital wallet at a field office. Customers who pay via cash, check or money order will not be charged a service fee.

While accepting credit cards is a new payment option offered at field offices, the DMV has been allowing customers to use credit and debit cards to complete transactions online, by phone and at DMV Now kiosks. Beginning September 29, these transactions will be charged a service fee of 2.1 percent.

The DMV accepts Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover card, or debit cards with a Visa or MasterCard logo. Visit the Payment Options page for more information.

Great info, thx. Thanks to all the helpful peeps here, I contacted Nicole at i25 and they actually had the exact build my wife is looking for coming in November. With the above info, we have a great start on figuring out all the details for the transaction. Prob have a ton more questions, lol. Thx all!

Thanks for the great info! I was thinking that part of the $727 fee that i25 collects goes toward license and registration but from your description that is not the case.

I ordered from them in July and your summary is spot on. I’d add that they are high volume so turnaround is reasonable (3 months). They are easy to work with and they may even have an allocation that matches what you want. Lastly, this thread gave me the confidence to order out of state because everyone on it covered all the info about registration with DMV.

For additional information for out state purchase, see postings in ‘Registering in CA’. So, looks like CA DMV still wants smog test for new out of state cars, see page 5, posting #98.

Just placed an order with i25 and worked with Sebastian. Nice guy and very helpful.

Although, I think the cost of shipping/dealer fee/DMV registration would be pretty close to, if not more than the $3000 mark up over at Valley Kia in Modesto. However, there is the option of making a road trip out of it as well, depending on the road conditions if my Telluride delivers in December.

Covered Shipping ($2000 to my location (bay area) is what I was quoted) + Dealer fee ($695) + DMV registration (~$600) = ~$3295
