• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... My beautiful SX-P was totaled by a drunk driver a month ago. I'm very lucky and grateful to be alive. In order to find the exact replacement, I had to fly to Tampa and drive it back to Atlanta. Had no issues. Then two nights ago I was driving and the check engine light came on (solid, not flashing). I ran the app diagnostics and it said everything was fine. I got outside my garage and put it Park. That's when the engine started shaking. Kinda freaked me out. So I drove it into the garage. Turned it off. Waited a minute and turned it back on. The engine light was gone and the engine was no longer shaking. I was still feeling a little vibration. Drove it yesterday and no weirdness other than the fuel injection was a little jumpy on Sport mode. So I called service dept and scheduled diagnostic. They said someone else had just called in with the same issue. I thought maybe I got some bad gas the night before but a mechanic said it would've started acting up within 20 minutes and not the hour and half later that it did. Can't believe my brand new Telly is already having issues. Anyone else know anything about this? Thank you!

just for fun, I assume you checked the oil level?

I had the same thing happen with my brand new '24 S within the first 300-400 miles. I was going downhill when the same exact process played out. Pulled off and ended up turning it off and back on. Everything disappeared and it has driven fine since.

I haven't found a way to reproduce it so that I can get it fixed. I've driven another 6,000 miles without seeing it again.

Wow. Sorry you're dealing with it. Since then, mine is just driving a bit "jerky". I ran the OBD scanner and it did say that cylinder 4 misfired. It feels like it could also be a spark plug coil issue which had been talked about in other threads. Gonna bring it in for service.

It's been stuck at the dealership here in Atlanta for almost two weeks. When I test drove it last week when the tech said he couldn't find the problem, I took a service mgr with me. Drove it, put it into Sport mode and accelerated. Took my foot off the gas and the thing instead of coasting starts abruptly downshifting like you do in a manual transmission when you want to slow down instead of braking. Except this is worse. The service mgr acknowledged that this wasn't normal at all. Now the tech is trying to gaslight me saying that it drives just like all the other new Tellurides on their lot they compared it to and KIA doesn't have any TSBs out on the vehicle. I told the service rep that not being able to figure something out isn't the same as saying the problem suddenly doesn't exist. Not sure what to do. This ridiculous.

Sorry to hear about your SX-P, but glad you're okay. I had something similar happen with my car last year. The check engine light came on, and the engine shook a bit. After turning it off and back on, the light was gone, but I still felt a bit of a vibration. My mechanic said it was a sensor glitch. Since your Telly is brand new, it's probably something small. Smart to get it checked out, though.

Same issue with my new Telluride. I have 8,400 miles on it. The Malfunction Indicator light came on & the car started shaking & running rough. This happened on a Saturday. When I started it to drive it to the service dept. at the dealership, the Malfunction Light was off & there was no shaking! The mechanic said he saw no history of a problem. Very frustrating!

Good news is I've never had it happen again. 15,000 more miles and nothing. I'm not sure when you experienced it, but mine occurred on a downhill and I believe cruise control was on.

Glad to hear it didn’t happen to you again. But it’s going to take awhile for me to regain confidence in my car.

I had this happen to my 2021 SX when it had ~ 30K KMs. The car drove but it was noticeably shaking. I kept driving because I was very close to home, I turned the car off and back on and it was normal. It has never happened again since then. Got 55K KMs on it.

"Shaking," particularly at low RPM is often a symptom of one cylinder not firing. Bad plug, missing spark, or bad/clogged injector will all do that. In piston airplanes we often have exhaust gas temperatures for each cylinder, making diagnosis easier. In street cars, not so much.

A warning to everyone in this thread: we have a 2022 Telluride EX with ~62k miles and have diligently performed every oil change, recommended maintenance, and recalls. It started roughly idling, then the Check Engine light came on for a day or two, then turned off. On my way to the dealer for the service appointment a few days later, the engine seized and needs to be replaced. Dealer says there was "no oil in the engine" without sharing a theory of where 7 quarts of oil magically disappeared to without leaving a stain in my garage or ever producing smoke in the exhaust.

How often had you been checking the oil? How many miles since changed?

I honestly never checked the oil but I had it changed every time the car prompted. I think it had been maybe 5k miles since the last oil change but I'm not 100% sure.

WADR I will add another warning to everyone in this thread: Check your oil regularly. Determine an appropriate interval based on the readings you get. For our Tellie with 7500 miles I use 1000 mile intervals because to date it has not used any oil at all.

Be sure you understand the level checking procedure. If you just grab the dipstick and look at it you will probably be mislead into believing there is no oil. Pull the dipstick, leave time for the oil to rise in the dipstick tube, then make the reading. Hot oil after the engine has been shut down for a few minutes (to drain) very little wait time is needed. Frigid oil will require a wait; a little experimentation on your part will help you figure out how much.

Given the experiences we're having, I think this is good advice. Before I had this problem, though, it never would have occurred to me that I would need to do regular oil checks on a 3 year old car that had never had any mechanical problem, for which I followed the maintenance schedule, and for which the mechanic doing the oil changes never found that it was losing oil. In the 30 years I've owned cars (Chryslers, Pontiacs, Hondas, BMWs), I've never had a car that needed its oil checked outside the service intervals. Maybe I was lucky, or maybe there's a real problem with Kia.

I think you've been lucky, but regardless it is a simple matter to check periodically and get a sense of the rate (if any) that an engine is using oil. As a side benefit, you will be able to spot an internal head gasket leak from the goo (aka emulsion) it puts on the dipstick.

It is so interesting to read the various way in which people maintain their vehicles. My dad recommended that I visually check fluid and tire inflation levels whenever I filled up the gas tank and I guess I just assumed that everyone did something like that. Typically our cars are the 2nd most expensive thing that we buy and just like your house, you have to take care of it. I read once where Bill Gates when he was younger would buy a car and then just drive it until the engine seized from lack of oil changes and would then buy another one. I like your recommendation to check your oil regularly, at least once a month.

21 Telluride with 41k. This just happened to me last night for the first time. It felt like the engine was misfiring. I had parked off my driveway for the day, when i started it up to move it back to the house it was violently shaking and check engine light came on. Oil was low so I topped it off, restarted and no issues yet. I had noticed this engine loves its oil from the first oil change I did. Its a well documented issue online in forums. It seems it "uses" oil at a slower rate initially, but once you get low enough the consumption is accelerated. I came to the conclusion that every 1k miles was a good interval also. It's my first vehicle that uses oil like this.
