• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... Hey folks, my SXP recently had screeching noise from the hood when I start the engine first thing in the morning, it lasts about 10 seconds then fades away. It happens more frequently when it’s freezing cold. Did some search and the most possible reason seems to be loose engine belt that slips in cold weather, but this shouldn’t happen in a 1 year old car. We’ve been very satisfied about our Telly and this is the only issue we’ve found.
Will have the first oil change next week and also have the dealership look into this, hopefully it can be corrected and I will post update.

I thought the hamsters were only in the Soul? Anyways, try feeding them... :)

Sorry you have this trouble. If it's not a simple or cheap fix Kia will play hardball with you.

Get recordings of the noise right away. Couple different days would be ideal. Good luck.

It does sound like a slipping belt. Inspect to make sure it didn't get contaminated with anything (oil, antifreeze, etc). Otherwise, it is surprising that you would be having the belt slip after such a relatively short time. Possible the tensioner is getting weak, but not real likely on such a new car. Do you have a lot of temperature variation where you live?

Thanks for the suggestions! I will record the sound before the service, actually 'We cannot duplicate the problem' is something that worries me more. Tried to find some videos about slipping belt, but it sounds intermittent or rhythmic, yet the noise from my car is high pitch and continuous, that makes me suspect about the belt. It seems to be a quite common thing on Kia models but I haven't seen it from Telluride, I live in Central New York where temperature varies a lot in a year and winter could be very cold, typically the colder the weather, the louder/longer the noise, but only happens in cold morning.

I have had the same thing happen to my 2020 Telluride a few times, especially when it's really cold out. I'd be interest to hear what the dealer says it could be.

Many moons ago when I was still on the farm, we had this problem on our farm trucks during cold Nebraska winters. My dad taught me that cure to the squeeling/screeching noise which was coming from the fan belt was to take a bar of soap (usually Ivory or Lifebouy) and hold it to the inside surface of the belt for four or five sec.....viola’ no more screech. As a bonus, your engine will smell fresher. It worked 60 years ago and I bet it still will.

OK got back from service, and they couldn't duplicate the problem. I'm not surprised as this week is not freezing cold here in central NY, I also tried two times to record the noise but no noise at all, dealer said belts and tensioners are in good condition, they asked me to record the noise when it's 10s F outside. The only thing I did since last time I had that noise is that I pull the dipstick out and fully insert it back, don't think this is related but no noise afterwards.

Had a chance today to record the noise, it's 23F outside, the noise seems to come from the engine (IMG_4895.mp4), have you guys heard this from your Telluride?
Another service is scheduled on next Wed, but it won't be cold enough then, I will show them the video.

It's a little colder here (it was -10C when I left the house this morning) and I do NOT get that sound. Good to have it recorded.

After hearing the sound you recorded it sounds like it could be a pulley bearing in the belt tensioner. At least that is a similar sound to what I have heard on my old Chevy. I have no idea what the Telly engine uses for belt tensioner but that could be the problem.

Dealership said belt and tensioner are in good shape last time, who knows, the tricky thing is that this only happens when it's below 25 and this winter is somehow warm. The noise sounds like it's from underneath the engine cover.

Laster winter was colder and we had a lot of really cold days yet the Telly didn't make such noise, apparently something has developed over time and now shows its color. Seems like my Telly is asking me to move south:LOL:

The recording sounds like the same screeching noise I am getting on first startup when it is really cold out. Sure sounds like a belt noise to me. It was -10C this morning when I started it and I did not get a noise.

I think it's dependent on how long the car has been sitting outside, currently I drive my Telluride every other day.

Yup, had the same thing this morning, which got me searching and found this thread. I'm in Ottawa and it was really cold (-29 Celcius last night). I remote started the Telluride and a then heard the whistle from INSIDE THE HOUSE, far from the front door. I let it be and when I left the house, it wasn't screetching anymore. I've heard alot of belt slips on older vehicles and it typically doesn't sound like that. This whistling sounds more like bearings from one of the pulleys.

Interesting. Also in Ontario and my start up was normal this morning. Very curious what this could be.

OK so my Telluride has been in dealership the 2nd time, they just told me the noise is not long enough to diagnose, technician suspects it's from engine intake manifold or around it but cannot find the point, so in this way Kia won't reimburse any parts/labor. I also called the Kia customer support and it has no help, simply said if dealership cannot find the source of the problem, they have nothing to do. Both side are telling me to live with a problem that is related with engine, until it get worse or break down. Totally disappointed.

I have the exact same issue. Kia Telluride SXP. I live in Vermont (cold weather). Left the car with the dealership and got a message that they are contacting the Kia engineers and that the sound is coming from the intake. The car has 1000 miles on it owned it for less than a month.
