Does the 2021 Telluride SX with towing package come with a 7-pin trailer connector?

I recently ordered a Telluride SX Nightfall Edition with towing package and had assumed it came with a 4-pin trailer connector standard and was wired as such. I just watched the Edmund review of the 2021 Telluride
and at 55 seconds in it states that depending on package it now comes with a 7-pin trailer connector in the 2021 model year.

After several calls to the Kia Dealership's parts department and in anticipation of the need to add a 7-pin connector I ordered both the Kia Telluride Trailer wiring harness part number S9F67 AC500 and an aftermarket 7-Pin trailer connector, Reese Towpower 4-Way Flat to 7-Way Pre-Wired Round Blade Connector.

Was this necessary?
 
My 2021 SX came with a 7 pin and a separate 4 wire electric brake connector harness. At least that is what the dealer told me....I won’t be using either as I just mount my bikes to the hitch.
 
Don’t confuse the brake controller harness which has 4 wires with the 4-pin flat trailer connector that goes on the back.

The other confusion is that ALL 2020 and 2021 Tellurides and Palisade are pre-wired. If you pull the black box off behind the left rear bumper you will find a 12-pin connector that the harness connects to. The 2020s are prewired to the vehicle for plug and play (PnP) of 4-pin only, while the 2021 offers you the same connector but has a couple more wires giving the option of PnP for either 4-pin or 7-pin. The 2021 also offers a place to PnP a wired brake controller in the cable. The 2020 does not have the wired brake controller option as PnP.

1. If you have a 2021, that came with the tow package, then you got the 7-pin trailer connection, you just need an adapter to go from 7-pin to 4-pin. That gives you everything for less than $10.

2. If you have the 2021 and you want to create your own tow option, then you get a hitch of your choosing (Kia, Curt, Draw-Tite, or Stealth) and you have a few options.
- If you just need 4-pin flat then you can get the 2020 harness from Kia, or the Curt or Tekonsha aftermarkets harness for less that are rated for more amperage.
- If you need 7-pin then you can buy the Kia 7-pin harness that will give you the 7-pin harness
- If you need both 7-pin and 4-pin, then you get the 7-pin harness and get the adapter for less than $10.

3. If you have the 2020, regardless of what you got, tow option, tow package, build your own . . . you cannot use the 2021 7-pin harness (or you can but it will be a waste).
- If you just need 4-pin, you can use the three 4-pin options: Kia, Curt or Tekonsha
- If you need 7-pin, you can use the 4-pin harness and then get an upgrade kit and add some wires to get you to 7-pin and offer both connections at the hitch (no adapter needed)

In short, unless Kia changed what other people have been receiving, you ordered wiring you would need to make your own Tow Option (situation #2 above). However, if you got your VIN and it includes either the Tow Option or the Tow Package, then you are in situation #1 above. You just need to spend less than $10. You don't need the harness it should come with it. If you ordered the 2021 Tow Option or the 2021 Tow Package, then you are already paying and should be getting S9F67 AC500, no need to buy it twice.

Some people like to add lights to their hitch mounted bike rack depending how how visible their turn and tail signals are. I have a cargo basket I hang off my hitch and added lights meant for a truck tailgate that plug into a 4-pin flat. But that's certainly not required. Just don't throw away that 4-wire electric brake harness that should be in your glove box. If you go to resell your Telluride or decide you want to tow with a wired brake controller, that may be a hard part to come by if you lose it.

I believe I am in (1) above (though I don't have my Telluride VIN as yet), so the parts I ordered are redundant. :-(

Although I will still need to connect the brake controller (Tekonsha P3 90195) to the wiring harness in the dash and I believe that wiring harness comes with the S9F67 AC500.

I wouldn’t cancel the part order until you have your VIN and look at the window sticker. Then you will know for sure what you are getting.

You are correct. That 2021 7-pin harness is in two parts.

Hi. our 2021 Telluride towing kit has the 4-way trailer connector. I’ve spoken to dealership parts department who said they don’t provide a 7-way, though I can see from this forum that he is incorrect, and 7-way is available. I only need to hookup a 5-way for my boat trailer, so trying to decide between getting the 7-way installEd and using 7 to 5-way adaptor which I already own, or using a cheap aftermarket 4 to 5-way adaptor. If the latter, I need to tie the fifth wire into the backup light wiring. I believe this is accessible under the driver side rear panels can you tell me which connector and which pin position is the backup light circuit?

If you have the 4-way flat, and you just want to wire up a 5-way and need the backup light, the simplest option might just be to tap into wire #8 on the 12-pin molex style connection.

When sold as a kit, the stuff I've seen only includes the 4-way flat. But if you purchase the three parts separately (Kia Hitch, Kia bumper cover, and harness) you can pick 4-way or 7-way if you pick the right harness part for your 2021.

If you purchase the Tow Option (which also comes with the Tow Package) that comes with the 7-pin. If the parts department is telling you that they can't order the 7-way, that would be odd. If you have the 4-way flat, and you just want to wire up a 5-way and need the backup light, the simplest option might just be to tap into wire #8 on the 12-pin molex style connection.

I just purchased a '21 Telluride SX without a tow package (that I wanted, weird situation). Anyway, I was wondering if you could clarify what parts to order for this to get an OEM Tow Kit.

Should I get this package (online screenshot)? Is this everything I need to make a Nightfall SX look like factory tow package (unfortunately without self-leveling suspension)?

I read some of your previous posts that there should be a plug and play 7 pin connector, which I think I would like.

That screenshot looks like Kiastuff.com. You can certainly order the kit and pick the right harness (4 or 7) and that would work. But at $680 isn't the lowest option. The part numbers purchased individually ends up being cheaper if you get the hitch receiver from another source I've seen it for as low as $286. Kia Stuff has a higher price for that part and their kit ends up more.

Here's what I would buy after searching Google for the best price with shipping:
  • Hitch Receiver S9F61-AU000 $286
  • Bumper Cover S9F61 AU060 $38

For a 4-pin plug and play harness:
  • I would not order the Kia 4-pin harness (S9F67 AC000) the Amp rating is lower than less expensive aftermarket options, so if you have a lot of lights on what you are towing you may have trouble
  • Curt makes the CU94FR 4-pin harness for the Telluride that is $95 and rated for over 7 Amps
  • Tekonsha makes a comparable plug and play 4-pin harness to the Kia for $35

For 7-pin plug and play harness on the 2021 with the 4-pin option:
  • The only option is the Kia 7-pin harness for the 2021 Telluride S9F67-AC500 $138
  • Then you could get a converter/adapter for under $10 to be able to give you 4-pin or 5-pin to cover all your options (this does not come with the Tow Option nor Tow Package from Kia on the 2021)
So the Kiastuff.com kit costs $680 and is on backorder, but by buying the three parts individually you can get the same for just over $400.

If you have the Nightfall package be forewarned that the black plastic might not match the shiny bumper fascia on the Nightfall, from what I've seen. But if you have ever towed that part can get scuffed so I wouldn't want it extra shiny.

A hitch anti-rattle tightener/stabilizer might also be a nice add on for under $20 that will help you when towing.

As for missing out on the Tow Package from the factory . . . I don't think you are missing much. If I were you I would live with a little sag and wait a little longer and someone will make aftermarket rear shocks that will raise the rear or an air bag kit that will do the same as the self-leveling shocks and softer struts for less money and maintenance.

Lastly, the one missing thing from this is a brake controller. If you are towing using a 7-pin round connection you need a brake controller. With a 2021 you can put one in the cab, or you can go with the wireless brake controller (hitch or trailer mount options) that are perfectly acceptable. A brake controller also does not come with the Kia Tow Package.

Since there is no "tow mode" in the drive modes, this is what I suggest:
  • Set Smart mode driving
  • Disable Autostart-stop
  • Disable the rear parking sensor
  • Turn off the auto-hold
  • Cruise control: Either don't use the Smart Cruise Control at all or go into settings and change to standard cruise control. I personally don't use cruise control when towing.
Depending on what you attaching to the hitch, you might want to consider adding brake lights to a cargo basket or bike rack for more visibility. If you are towing a boat or trailer, consider an anti-sway arm, if you are regularly towing 4,000-5,000lbs you might want to consider a weight distribution system.

I'm new to trailering so I asked the local RV dealership if there would be any issues with this and they immediately pointed out to me that I would need to have a 7 pin harness in order to power trailer brakes to tow loads of any significance. This correlates w/ the owners manual that without trailer brakes/7 pin harness I can only safely tow a max of 1600 lbs.

I contacted my local Kia dealership regarding the situation and have been frustrated by their lack of a solid answer. They state that there is no way for them to give me a 7 pin harness that will power trailer brakes and that I will need to find an aftermarket solution. Very little help other than this response.

If you search this forum this is an ongoing debate and mainly centered around buyers who feel Kia Engineering and Marketing did their homework vs. those who see value in using aftermarket to fill in the missing gaps.

First I'll address your questions:
  1. In certain scenarios, the Telluride can technically tow to spec with the Factory Tow Package OR the Kia OEM Tow Option (whether it comes from the factory or you buy the parts and go DIY). The Telluride towing in 2020 makes no mention of a brake controller. Therefore, there are only a few scenarios where you can legally and safely tow up to 5,000 lbs with just a 4-pin flat.
    1. If you live in a state (there are a couple) that don't require trailer brakes you are legal, but arguably not safe to tow within that state.
    2. If you have surge or hydraulic brakes on the trailer you can use a 4-pin flat and still have trailer brakes. This is how UHaul gets away with renting some of their smaller trailers that still have brakes but don't require a brake controller.
    3. If you have a trailer that has a light enough tongue weight and has surge brakes. For example smaller 1-2 horse trailers are incredibly lightweight and often have two axles which means that they are engineered to be very well balanced and level and they can have surge brakes if required with a light tongue weight but only require a 4-pin flat.
    4. I personally think that this Towing Package was built for the purposes of towing toys like boats, jetskis, snowmobiles, horse trailers. I don't think it was fully engineered with the intent for use with a ~4,000 lb travel trailer. I also think the primary reason for the self leveling shocks is to improve comfort when not towing.
  2. If you aren't scared of aftermarket parts you have some great options that could actually work out better than the factory 7-pin harness on the 2021/2022.
    1. A Curt 57672 or Hopkins 47185 can be wired up to your 2020 vehicle harness with minimal impact especially if you have a professional install it.
    2. I would personally recommend a 12V 30A automatic reset breaker be mounted in the engine bay near the battery with 12-gauge wire running from the front to the back.
    3. For a brake controller, there are a couple solutions that don't mount in the cabin at the dashboard but instead at the hitch or on the trailer. The most popular appears to be a Curt Echo Wireless Brake Controller. This offers you a bluetooth app that requires a one time setup, but then it uses the motion of vehicle to send the brake signal to trailer brakes. One of these solutions doesn't require the need to run a wire into the cabin.
    4. The 2021/2022 7-pin harness that ties into the vehicle harness does give you a brake controller option connection in the cabin without having to drill through the firewall, but it uses fuses that can pop. An automatic resetting breaker offers an advantage over requiring extra fuses.
I don't have the self leveling suspension so my opinion is not based on first hand knowledge, only what I have read on this forum and other websites. I won't get into the details of why I think these shocks aren't a true towing benefit as that has been covered. To put it simply, if leveling works it could give some anti-sway benefit, but it does not distribute weight. Beyond that, I will only suggest you read this thread: If you purchased the Tow Package please read this . . .

I'll be sure to take a look at it. Seeing that not having a factory installed tow package does not paint me into a corner, I have better peace of mind in purchasing the Telly later today.

Now to chose between Everlasting Silver NFE (today) and Gravity Gray NFE (October).
 
After reading this thread I have a couple of questions:
1) Does Kia sell a brake controller?
2) Does the Kia hitch kit, whether installed from the factory or purchased over the counter for installation after delivery, come with a ball? I see the ball mount in the picture but not the ball itself.

Kia does not offer an electronic brake controller.

The Kia hitch receiver comes with a ball mount but no ball.
