Excessive oil consumption

my '13 subaru legacy has 226k and is chugging oil like a freshman at a frat party (1qt/500mi)



^^^this is a good question...has anyone has the low oil light come on yet?...are they all defective or is it set to come on at such a low level that you're screwed at the point when it does come on...in my car mentioned above i am about 1.2qt low when the light comes on...car takes about 5.2 during an oil/filter change

I never got a low oil warning light, even when it was down more than 4 quarts (verified by my Kia dealer 4000 miles after they changed the oil). My engine was already damaged and Kia replaced it.

We are still waiting on the car, picking it up tomorrow. After 3, tests they finally determined it was using too much oil. First try was pcv valve, they said it was bad, nope. So as per KIA headquarters the did a complete valve job, rings etc and I’m not sure what else until we pick up the vehicle. They are giving us an addl 12 month 12k mileage warranty after this work. We shall see how this goes.

They replaced my engine with a factory remanufactured one. Do I have the same confidence in it as I used to…NO. But I try to tell myself that I have a newish engine now.

Initially that’s what they said they were going to do but it didn’t happen. It would have been cheaper in the long run. They have had the car for a month and they have had to pay for a rental this whole time. This was the second time for a rental.

I’m sorry that your experience sucked. They had my car for about 3 days while they worked with Kia corporate to confirm engine replacement. Then it took about two weeks to get the engine and do the swap. They gave me a Sportage to drive for the duration. My experience was not nearly as bad as yours.

i just bought a pcv valve to have on hand...i plan to do an oil change...run the car till the next oil change and monitor oil level...next oil change i'll replace the valve...if i have to add oil to be safe i will keep track of what i add

Just had this issue. Wife stated rough idle when at a stop. Recently she mentioned there is a rattle. Asked if it was inside the cabin or by engine. She said Engine. She did mention the engine oil light came on but after restart it was gone.

I checked engine dipstick and had to do a double take. Slightly some oil barely on the dipstick. I kept checking and it almost had no oil.

I'm gonna monitor if the shaking goes away and rough idle. I did floor it after I added oil and seems to run normal. Is it a MUST to get it looked at or should I just monitor for a week or two?

Get this looked at immediately! My engine was exactly the same and Kia replaced it. Burning that much oil is a symptom of something very wrong. The rattling is the same sound I was hearing that started the monitoring by Kia. They watched the oil consumption between oil changes that they performed and found that it consumed over 4 quarts in about 4k miles.

Our 2020 with 55K had a little engine shudder for a couple weeks, finally the check engine light came on and I checked the dipstick. There was no oil registering on the dipstick (I mean none, just some char on the metal). I was probably 4500 miles into an oil change.

I just got it back from the oil consumption test and they told me it was only .5 quart in the 1000 miles so does not qualify. Thing is, I read the dipstick a handful of times before bringing it in and the level was well below the Low line. They claimed it’s only a half a quart between the F and the L line on the dipstick.

Of course I can’t find any KIA documented specs on the dipstick, but that sounds ridiculous. I’d love to see how they’re actually measuring the oil consumption, because they didn’t drain it and they didn’t charge me for the “top off” which they usually do. I’m betting they pull the stick and squint a bit from across the garage and call it good.

Start class action suit. 2020 vehicles have issues and kia is not backing their product even though they have been made aware of the issue.

My 2020 Telluride has 62k miles and has received regular oil changes. It just recently started to feel like it was going to stall when I came to a stop. Shortly afterwards it started making a weird noise. No odors, no warning lights displayed. My husband decided to check the oil and it was literally dry. He had to add 4 quarts of oil before it even touched the dip stick. We have an appointment with the dealership in a week, but I’m afraid that they are going to blame this on not getting the vehicle serviced on a regular basis or that nothing is wrong with it. My biggest concern is the fact that the check engine light never came on which could have posed a serious risk to the vehicle or myself. I’d love to know if anyone has experienced similar issues.

Is there a set of VINs that this happens to? So far I haven't had this happen to my Telluride.

We had similar issues with our 2020 Telluride, multiple oil consumption tests as we had 3+ times it used 3-5 quarts of oil and no warning light came on. After the last test and using 5+ quarts they rebuilt the engine. We were doing another consumption test after the work was done , we we to drive 1000 miles and have the dealer check the oil level.
about 200 miles before we were going to take it in the engine blew up! We now have a new factory engine installed, we shall see how this one goes! Very frustrating!

2024 SX-Prestige: The sort of thing where i need to constantly check oil levels is just ONE of the reasons we sold our car after just 5K miles. It beame clear that this car was not going to last us 10 years or 100,000 miles. There were too many KIA specific things that i "worried" about. Life is too short to fret about whether i have a dependable car or not.
