How much are you towing?

There are a lot of owners out there that are planning on or are currently towing a trailer / camper. I'm looking for some of your opinions on how the Telly is doing towing your trailers. I plan on getting a camper next year that has about a 4000 lbs dry weight and 425 on the tongue. I'm curious if there is anyone towing anything heavier.

Only towing I've done so far is my $625 lb Aluma trailer with about a $360 lb Pallet load. So I could strap the pallet down better I had it all the way forward and not over the axle. The self leveling suspension seemed to work great and I didn't even know the load was back there, even hauling up a mountain road.

The maximum towing capacity is listed at 5000lbs for the Telluride's 3.8L so I'm thinking you'll be okay. I plan on towing my pop-up that weighs in at about 4000lbs all together. About the only thing I'm thinking of doing is adding an electronic brake controller although I'll probably just install the one I took out of my other vehicle before I returned it.

That’s a misprint in the manual. Actual tongue weight is 500lbs.

Question in regards to the tow package. If you opt for an after market tow hitch does the approved rating go down? On my Durango for example if you got the factory tow package it was rated higher than if you installed afterwards, whether dealer installed it or not.

Most Class III 2” hitch receivers are rated for 500lbs or more. So the rating just remains the lowest number. The Curt hitch receiver that hangs just below the bumper is rated for up to 750lb TW for example. But you still should stick with the 500lb for the vehicle as the max.

Also quick correction on your wording, there are two things on the Telluride, 1. Is the tow hitch option and 2. Is the tow package which is the tow hitch and added self leveling shocks. I have just the tow option since the self leveling shocks don’t increase the towing capacity in any way and I’m fine with using weight distribution to adjust any vehicle sagging.

The tow rating might be 5,000, but the Gross Combined Weight Rating, or GCWR is what is really important. The GCW is the total weight of the tow vehicle, passengers and gear, and what is being towed (Boat/trailer, or Camper trailer). That combined weight cannot be more than the GCWR. Usually, the maximum tow rating of 5,000 lbs, is for a not fully loaded vehicle (passengers and gear). I cannot find what the GCWR is, but that owners manual has a good explanation of how to determine the how much can be towed given the weight of any cargo, passengers and tongue weight

If you look in the owners manual it says to tow 5000lb you trailer needs electric brakes on it. With that being said KIA screwed the pooch by not putting a electrical connections for brakes. You will need to change your connection to work with electric brakes. The Telluride comes with a 4 pin connection and I think you will need the round5 or 6 pin connection. There are threads on here of people changing it over so look for those threads to help you out. Mine pulls my bass boat just fine and my boat weights like 3100 lbs loaded. Kia had said that is a mistake and the tongue weight is rated at 500 lbs Kia is suppose to be putting out a correction to change and inform owners of the mistake.
