Is HUD worth it?

Will never buy a car without one again. And the fact that Kia/Hyundai include blind spot indicators in their HUD is a stroke of genius.

Clearly I'm in the minority, but I had never heard of this technology until a coworker purchased a used car last year (a Mazda) and was showing it off. Among the features she showed was this strange one where the speed (and maybe more) was projected onto the windshield, and both she and the few of us looking at it thought it was the most annoying thing ever. Like when you place an object on your dash until you realize you have to stare at its reflection in the windshield, and then resort to tossing the object on the floor instead just to get it our of your sight. Fast forward a few months and we were shopping for a Telluride for my wife and it became clear that this HUD feature was the one I had seen that day, and it amazed me that it was something that people pay a premium for when my experience with it had been a group of people staring at it in disbelief and speculating on whether the poor girl could possibly disable it.

It’s actually great once you start using it.

Can't say, never had HUD, I know how fast I am going and I know where I am going 99% of the time.

I don't use the driving alerts, I find them annoying at best.

Well, this thread has nothing to do with you. The HUD also displays the current speed limit along with how fast you’re going. Help with roads that change drastically and often in a short period of time. Driving alerts are a great thing for a good amount of people. But it seems as if you’re smarter and better than others.

If Ferrari is exploring the idea of putting it into their race cars then it's got some merit. It's still a personal preference but I like having the information right on front of my face so I don't have to take my eyes off the road. Then again I'm a casual gamer so having a HUD is somewhat normal.

I picked up my SX-P Thursday from Jake Sweeney in Kentucky and drove the 850 miles home to Boston. The HUD was on the entire way and I find it to be extremely useful (and better than the HUD I had in a previous car).

Another cool feature of the Kyundai HUD: being able to change the speedometer color between orange, white, and green. Mine‘s on green. It’s cool and refreshing…

That is not for you to determine. You need HUD, fine, use it. Just don't expect every driver to need it or want it.

It’s going to become standard… just like power steering/brakes/windows/door locks. Who wants to go back to crank windows? I think HUDs are amazing.

Standard is a different story, and I am sure it will have an off position for those odd fellows like me that are not interested, paying $2.000 for a package that includes it...not for me.

You’re correct in that turn-by-turn nav directions only work with Kia nav. Google Maps navigation (through Android Auto) doesn’t work with the HUD.

I bought the SX Prestige specifically to get the HUD; I think it adds value even in everyday driving, so it’s worth it for me. If you think it only adds value when using navigation, and you consider the Kia nav inferior to what you would use otherwise, then clearly it would not be worth it for you.

My Genesis has HUD and I love it on that. Ordered. Telluride and didn’t want to spend the money for the SX. I’ll miss it but it’s not a must have.

You may find this shocking, but there are actually folks who prefer to be in command of their vehicle, not the other way around. Often, less is more. Soon side view mirrors will be replaced by cameras, so get used to tech, what is an option today will become standard one day- remember anti lock brakes, power windows? You can’t stop what’s coming!

So you would rather drive a car with no safety technology and this is better? Wouldn't you think that driving a car just like you did 20 years but now having these aids is a better situation?

Kind of a silly question. Well worth it to some, not worth it to others. And the additional cost may not fit in everyone’s budget.

There’s about a $20,000 spread between the most basic Telluride and the most deluxe. All get you to the same place at the same time. Get what fits you the best.

For those of us, who are getting older, these features help us drive longer and safer. For me that is a Good thing!!!

Hey @keited! We just ordered our Telluride, and I chose against getting the Prestige package simply because we have car seats/boosters as well. Honestly, for the next 5 years we will still have some sort of booster/booster seat, and the heated/ventilated seats just aren't a thing I need with our family. Additionally, the headliner I can just imagine my kids using their finger and drawing some sort of design in it as well. But, that's my kids for you haha. The HUD didn't seem like something I absolutely need. Would it be nice, sure, but is it something that is a game-changer in the vehicle for my daily driving, especially when I choose to use Apple Car Play constantly? Nope. That coupled with all the above is why I chose against the extra $2,300 I could use elsewhere on a family vacation

Javi did not say "this makes me smarter & better than others." And, I did not say I'd rather drive a car with no safety technology & it's better.

It’s a nice luxury. While not in your face noticeable, when I wear polarized sun glasses, I certainly miss it.
