I apologize if this has been addressed (new here)! Has it been confirmed the opening and closing dates of KFOS this month?

I believe Thursday July 8th was opening, and usually is open for 10 days.

Can someone tell me what KFOS stands for? We ordered an Ebony Black EX Telluride on May 21, 2021. We still don't have an arrival date or VIN number and Im wondering how I can get more information myself other than badgering my sales person.

@Aviv07:

KFOS = Kia Forward Ordering System

Right now, you don't really have an order with Kia.

You're on a waiting list to order, with the dealership.

Think of it more like a back order.

You've filled out a form with specifications you want for an eventual custom order, and most likely left a deposit with the dealership to reserve your place in line.

The customers ahead of you on the waiting list are waiting their turn to be accepted into KFOS, the actual ordering system, as the dealers only get so many allocations each month for the most desired Tellurides, i.e. AWD and higher trims like EX, SX, SX Prestige, SX P/T.

Patience. The wait could take a while.

Once you're next in line, top of the list, and the next dealer allocation goes to you, and KFOS finally accepts your order, you actually have an order, KIA posts your window sticker online, with the VIN and itemized build list, you can check for ETA updates and start ordering accessories that didn't make it onto the list shown on the window sticker.

It's not a bad thing to keep in good communication with your sales person.

I lucked out and the Sales Manager kept me informed pretty much every week where I was in line and my movement up the wait list and estimates of how many allocations they'd get. I appreciated the regular updates, and hanging out here on the Forum, while I slowly moved up the wait list to order.

Finally one day my form was accepted into KFOS and then my order became real, things started moving fast when Kia posted the sticker :)

KFOS is open right now.. closes in 4 hours.. will get initial ETA's starting Wednesday

Thank you everyone for the info! I appreciate it.

This is a great explanation of the Kia ordering system. Thanks.

A couple of related questions:
  • How long is the build cycle once an order is in KFOS?
  • Assume that post-build, the cars are staged by location before loading for shipment to the dealer - what is the time for this (not the travel time from GA to your location)?

Stephen had posted about this quite some time back, most still applies - Latest info on ordering through KFOS | Kia Telluride Forum

Hi- since kfos has now closed, does that mean if you don’t see anything in failcat, you’re order didn’t get picked up or could it be added later this week. I only see one vehicle for my dealer NH011- it looks like they are pretty small volume though. Thanks

You see the car show up on failcat when the Telluride is built. This will be at a later date after the order is accepted. So will not correlate with KFOS closing.

Ah ok thanks, I misunderstood. Is there any way to check if the order has been picked up other than asking the salesman?

In my case the actual build took about two days. Then another week for final inspection, and due to be shipped out shortly thereafter.
Mine went in to paint on Friday June 25, completion on Monday June 28. Final inspection on July 3, and shipped on July 9. There was also a week long plant shutdown and the holiday that slowed things down.
Once your vin hits failcat, it’s probably finished being built.

waiting, waiting waiting -- for me -- it's been almost a month since i put in the order, not sure whether it has been accepted into KFOS - most likely not

Vin shows up on "paint in date" which is at start of build. It shows on failcat usually a day or two later.. so still at the early stages of production.

like you mention.. actually gets built pretty quick.. the wait part is final inspection and transport

I found out this week that my order was placed by the dealer and picked up by Kia. The dealer also provided me with a planned delivery date of 15 September.

This is the first time in decades of buying cars that I have placed an order rather than taking a vehicle from dealer stock, so have no idea of what to expect, other than a vehicle will turn up at some point. There are a couple of questions regarding the Kia ordering process that I hope the experts on the forum can help with:
  • Does the info from the dealer mean the order is in KFOS?
  • When should I expect to see a VIN in failcat?
Thanks in advance.

I saw my VIN a few days before the dealer told me. I did see a couple EX pop up yesterday, does one match your build?

Not sure what the options key in failcat is but assume P is Premium and T is towing; mine should have both. There is one in my color and interior with P/T in the Options column but it's not AWD. So hopefully it's for someone else and not an error slated to be delivered to me. I would think that it's a bit early for mine to show up as it's not scheduled to arrive until Sept.

Edit: I just clicked on VIN and looked at the window sticker for the AWD in the same color & interior as my order. It's a Premium with the tow package, neither of which show in the Options column. I got excited until I saw that it was also a Nightfall, so a false alarm. The moral of the story appears to be that you need to check the window sticker to be sure of what the build is.

If they gave you an ETA of 9/15, the VIN will pop up around 8/16 somewhere around there, so I'd keep an eye on Failcat during that week-

If Roger gave you the ETA, he's been putting in a cushion at least with mine...It's about 10 days later than what @StephenCantrelle saw in the system. So really yours should be showing up in the next week or two.

Roger did give me the ETA @arattle and if he's adding the cushion you reference, my build should show up nearer the beginning of Aug than the middle of the month. Thanks for the info - I'll be keeping an eye on failcat.
