Locking doors with passenger doors open

If I try to close and lock my doors using the driver side door handle outside, and other doors are open, it just beeps, but won't lock. I have to stand next to the door until all other doors are closed. Please tell me this can be changed.

That's correct. Instead, use the door lock button on the inside of the door before closing the door. Using the inside door lock button immediately locks all doors whether they are open or not.
