Here is a new tool released by NHTSA for checking recalls by manufacturers:

The dataset includes recall information related to specific NHTSA campaigns. Users can filter based on characteristics like manufacturer and component. The dataset can also be filtered by recall type: tires, vehicles, car seats, and equipment. The earliest campaign data is from 1966...

It is a data point, but I am not sure how meaningful this is. It can be interpreted in many ways. For example, it may suggest that Mercedes is quick to address issues identified while other makers may deny the existence of issues.
