• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... Oil Leak

Hi! We have a 2022 Telluride. Big oil leak last Jan after a cold snap and had to replace oil housing assembly at 69 K (covered under warranty). Now new leak at 103 K (after another cold snap) apparently leak is at rear main seal and it needs replacing- No warranty & a $3100 job. Feeling very upset with this vehicle- it doesn’t seem to hold up to the cold. We also had our air conditioning seals replaced this summer bc they all failed after winter (after several visits to Kia bc they couldn’t find the issues).

They claim they see rear main seal fixes often, yet that is not at all what I hear from other mechanics. My family has been operating a farm with a ton of tractors & vehicles and have only ever replaced this part 2 times- on old tractors that have sat around. I think Kia has some big issues here with their shitty parts and I’ve tried to ask them to provide me data on these fixes but they refuse. Anyone have luck working up the chain? Kia Canada states they do not work with these issues.

I just took my car in due to 3 quarts of oil down in 1200 miles, no visible leaks except at the rear main seal. I’ve got 71k on my 2020.

Rear main on my 20 SX is leaking too. Current plan, ignore it until it goes away.

A couple of thoughts about the above two:

THREE (3) quarts down in 1,200 miles?? I'm hoping that it was added in in between and NOT run three quarts low during that period?

Oil leaks DO NOT fix themselves.

Having spilled more than my fair share of oil on my shop floors in my career; All at once or cumulatively, three quarts of oil will be a rather large puddle to say the least!

There is a known issue with these engines "consuming" oil. About a qt or more every 1000 miles. I recently posted on this forum about how a $50k vehicle with 30k miles shouldn't do this and what a piece of crap engine this is (looks like my post was deleted). I was offered the consumable oil test by dealer where I have to pay for oil change and bring the car back a few times to see how much is being used. I had just had the oil changed 2k miles ago and wasn't going to pay for it again or go through all that! Apparently someone's word along with thousands of other Telluride owners with same issue isn't enough. And the fact Kia has to know about this serious issue. I told the dealer to forget it and decided to unload this lemon and buy a different car, definitely NOT a Kia every again. Plus I will tell everyone I know about this experience and NOT to buy Kia. 2021 Telluride

Bro,

ALL the newer cars do it. Lets talk about some very high end German cars ($$$) whereas; the oil consumption won't even be initially addressed unless it's 1L per 500 miles or so! Service bulletins ferret this out.
Just incredulous.

Bro, NOT true! Don't know about German cars but know a lot of friends and family members with Toyotas, Hondas, Nissans & even American cars that go oil change to oil change without adding any oil. And most of these cars cost less than the Telluride. Good for you if you are ok with adding oil every 1k miles but I'm not and unloading this piece of crap fast as possible. Already have it listed for sale and a few buyers looking at it this week. Of course I will let them know about the oil consumption and they are covered until 60k to address issue with dealer to get new engine.

1) I am NOT okay with it.
2) I know some of my clients that have Asian cars with multitude of oil consumption and massive carbon buildup issues.
3) Just stating of what I have come to know as of the last 37+ years in my industry.

I remember my mom's first gen Celica Supra. Never burned even one drop of oil. I changed out the old school V drive belts out of fear (although they were okay) @ 80K miles. Coolant hoses that could easily go 200K. Not anymore...
Imagine paying close to, or well over $100K for a high end German car.
Complain about consumption and have the service manager show you a factory bulletin that states that 1L per 800km (500 miles) is NORMAL?

Toyota turbo V6's are eating bottom end bearings and blowing up, infinity V6's have massive carbon buildup issues etc.
Sad, these once were the envy of the industry.

NONE OF THIS I am comfortable with, it is however the new state of what is happening. Why? IMO it's mostly because of the bean counters. They keep pushing to make each and every thing cheaper and cheaper, (more profit) and NO, they don't make or hand out awards at 100, 100 & 300,000 miles anymore... Hell no, we want you to buy a new car, damnit. (How about building a great car anymore?)

This is the de-evolution of an industry I was once VERY proud.

Interesting. You seem more up to date than me and in the business. I agree it's a real shame. So to be clear you are saying this is the norm for all manufacturers? Is it just 6 cyl engines? What about 4 or 8 cyl engines? Are there any models out there not consuming oil? I guess the days of owning a vehicle for 7- 10 years is over and leasing for a few years is the way to go?

I hated buying a Non-American car but always heard people say the Asian cars lasted 200k+ miles compared to American 100k miles so I bought the Telluride. I feel stupid because I even researched the telluride and didn't see anything about oil consumption or I wouldn't have bought it.

I had a 2005 Lincoln Aviator V8 that was still running at 350k miles and hardly burned any oil, maybe 1/2 qt between 5k oil changes! One transmission at 180k was only major issue in the 15 yrs I owned it. I miss that truck and wish I still had it!

PS, I've been a copier/printer repair technician (as my user name implies) for 45 yrs and same thing with the equipment which is all made in Asia. It has also taken a downward trend and machines not lasting like the older equipment use to. All throw away junk!
