• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... TEXAS and We're FULL!
At my age, I am an electronic imbecile, so 'Please Go Easy on me', Har Har. O.K, this is what I need to know....... I want to take our Pups with me to town, but living in Texas in the summer, I Must keep my A/C on, to keep them comfortable. I haven't taken them yet because I don't know how to lock my S up with my engine running and my A/C going. Can someone please tell me how I can do this without my pups setting off an alarm, or the engine stopping and them getting hot? No, I don't want to merely roll my windows down, it would still be too Hot. Thanking you in Advance....

Unfortunately you can't do this easily on new vehicles. You'll be best to just leave driver door unlocked. But, would be best to not take dogs when running errands anymore... car can heat up quickly if a/c goes out. Also, people may decide to break windows to "rescue" pups... of course this depends on where you live in Texas!

There is a way to lock the doors with the car running... but you probably don't want to do it! I'll test it to confirm, but first need to know how to use the physical key to unlock vehicle.

Thanks jw_tx21, I will Very Impatiently await your 'test' and reply. I am afraid my pups would Divorce me if I never took them with me again. I have all of my windows Darkly Tinted (Legally) and have them in the rear area, comfortable padded, where they cannot be seen, with the A/C ducts pointed right at them, and I always park where I can keep a good watch on my car good when I run into stores, and Never 'dilly-dally' when in them, but haven't tried locking it up yet. I Appreciate your Time and Trouble, Very Much.

Oh, Yes, I know how and can use the 'key fob' key.

So the only way I have done this with car running on my Mazda is to roll down driver's side window before exiting the vehicle. Exit the vehicle and shut driver door. Then, reach through open driver window and lock vehicle with power door lock. Then, use the auto-up feature of driver window to close the window - pull your arm out quickly. You now have a vehicle locked and running.

To unlock, however, the key fob won't work. You must use the physical mechanical key that is inside the key fob - which requires removing the little cover on the Telluride driver door.

I tested this in ACC position on Telluride SXP, and it worked. I would need to test with car running. One person reported that after doing this they had to crawl through tailgate because electronic key fob only unlocked tailgate (they didn't use the mechanical key.). But, something to keep in mind in case the mechanical key doesn't work. Test in ACC position.

This is a "feature" of new cars... they don't want us locking them and leaving them running... presumably to prevent leaving a child in rear seat. Use this method at your own risk... I've used it once, but won't do it again.

On the Telluride, you'd also need to disable the idle stop and go of course to keep the engine from turning off.

I Really appreciate that. I heard somewhere that the engine, unless it is done right, only stays running for 15 minutes, then shuts off, so I'll have
to not 'jack around' while I'm in stores, or better yet, let my sweet wife do the shopping and I just do the visiting...... I heard also that the 'whatever that detects movement' has to be disabled also........Jeez, that's a lot to worry about....... Thanks jw_tx21, Have a Great, but SAFE, weekend.

Can't you just remote start the car? At least 10 minutes will be cooled/warmed. Any longer than that you may need to use @jw_tx2 method!

Be sure to turn off auto stop as well. Also, check local laws. It may still be illegal to lock them in. I’d also put a BIG note on the window with your cell number.

Also, idling can get you a big fat juicy summons.

Tree huggers and their Holier than Thou laws... As soon as we get to the last level of accepted emissions.... not satisfied to just keep moving the needle up even more. I am a BOOMER who enjoyed the sound and power of the Muscle Cars.... had my share of Super Sports, Pontiacs and Olds 442s... throwing in a few MOPAR and FOMOCO. Leaded gas that didn't destroy those engines like now. Was able to even buy AV gas when needed.

I find it interesting that now we have a rash of parents LEAVING their kids in their cars while ...at work, at the strip bar, or Casino.... and think nothing of it. Endings of those scenes are tragic. ( love the Occupancy Alert). Now we have to figure out a way to leave a pet in an AC car for a quick trip into a store. I set up our T-Ride 3rd row to accommodate our Basset ..Cleo. So far, have not had to leave her alone... yet. What we HAVE done is to keep our BEATER that has air and CAN be running so she is comfy. It is now HER car ( 2005 Hyundai Sonata) ... we use it for the quick trips with her. Here in PA we don't have that IDLE law... (YET). I can hear the hollering... MY VEHICLE, MY USEAGE, And I wonder how many people in California and even parts of Texas like climbing into a COLD vehicle to start the day if they don't have to? I can now... have the T-Ride warm...heated to my preference... then enjoy the heated seats as well as steering wheel. We paid for it to be used. Yes, I am OLD...71 and this vehicle may have a better warranty than I do, but, I WANTED one. (SXP/AWD/Tow). I am still learning all the accoutrements and enjoy driving it ( or at times...lol...being driven, even behind the wheel...makes my wife nervous). So...drive it, enjoy it and learn it...IMHO.

Vietvet, I Totally Agree with Everything you said, especially about the Libs Holier than Thou' laws. Their laws are as Idiotic as they are....
I have owned my Evony Black S since June, (Ione day after my wife came home with a White EX), and just put 2,000 miles on it, and I still feel 'Giddy' I am so excited when I settle into the comfortable seat of it and smell that new Leather.
This Telluride is my First New Car since 1967, when I bought my first Ford Pick up.
Heck, I even haul Alfalfa hay for my deer in the very back of it.
Yes, I'll be 80 in January and Still Love the old, Fast, Loud, 50', 60's cars, and have my '59 Ford Fairlane 500 2-Dr. Hard-top up for Trade for a '49 Ford coupe right now.
But, till then, I would love to take my Pups to town and back in my 'New Car'.
Have a Great One, Vietvet.
