In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Ready for purchase but do I disclose to the dealer that I have a trade in?

Long time lurker, I've gotten a wealth of knowledge throughout the threads and now ready to join the Telluride family. Ordered early Sept. and picking up my SX Prestige Moss on Thurs. 12/26. I thought I read in an earlier thread that I shouldn't disclose to the dealer that I have a trade in till the day of purchase. Is there any benefit or drawbacks to telling my dealer earlier? My dealer (Fort Bend Kia, TX) said my car wouldn't be ready till 2:00 pm that day but I wanted to expedite the paperwork earlier since in my experience the buying process usually takes 3-4 hours. What are your thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Hi Howard,

I’m sure someone will jump in and give you some input.

Without trying to hijack your thread, any comments or tips for buying from Fort Bend Kia?

It all depends...
- does the dealer have a huge used car inventory?
- what kind of car are you trading? miles, condition, etc.

If you have a CARMAX nearby, go get a quote with them, then tell your dealer to match or beat it.

It's really up to you and the work that your're willing to put in.

@Husker Soze advice is good. The only reason not to tell your dealer early is when you are still negotiating on price of the vehicle. Always better to negotiate the price of the vehicle you want to buy first (before discussing financing, etc) then after you have price disclose trade in and be sure you have a few competitive quotes at hand (Carvan's, CarMax, etc.). This is to prevent you and them from negotiating both sides of the transaction at the same time.

In the case of the Telluride, I don't think it matters because if you had an order, you likely already agreed on price. They will push hard to sell you a warranty or something else - but you can always decline. They will probably also low ball your trade in - so you need to have some alternate offer or an idea of what you want to get for it.

Also, be sure to decline the Texas Dealer Inventory Tax - it's usually only about $100 - and often included in the finance department paperwork - but just say that you don't want to pay it and they should remove it.

It's a "circus process" but in the end, if you know your data.....it usually works out. I traded in a 2018 fully loaded Explorer with 29k miles......they offered 33k , I wanted 34k , they settled at 33,500. I took it ....they sold me the SX P at 500 under MSRP, my Explorer is now on their lot for 36K, they will negotiate with a buyer down to probably 34,500....so, I got a good deal, the dealer will make money and all are well!!

I doubt it matters whether you bring the trade up now or at delivery, but I do hope you have other options rather than trading because the dealer has you over a barrel otherwise. After waiting months for a new car in short supply to arrive they know you’re very reluctant to walk away now and start over. So they’ll low ball your trade and you’ll be in a weak position to negotiate if you’re unwilling to buy the new car without trading. Dealers, who are in the business of negotiating and do it all the time, are very savvy about this sort of thing.

The common advice to bring up trades after negotiating the new car price makes sense ONLY if you’re willing to sell the trade separately. And many states don’t tax the trade value, making it tax costly to sell a car privately; so in these states it usually makes most sense to negotiate with the trade in the deal from the get go. Also, my experience is that how dealers value trades usually has much more variability than discounts on new cars. So for significant trades, the value of the trade is the most important negotiation. It’s silly to spend hours negotiating a $500 discount on a new car and then have them value the trade $3k under book. Again, if you’re ok separating the deal then separate negotiations make sense but if you’re committed to trading, then I’d always recommend one single OTD negotiation which includes the trade.

Welcome Howard! I too ordered my SXP Dark Moss from Fort Bend Kia. I ordered on Aug 17 and they have given me an ETA of Dec 28. Congratulations on getting yours! I hope to be following you soon.

I agree with all the points above and I'll add that depending on your state, there are advantages to trading to the dealer even if they are a little below CarMax.

Carmax offered me $15K for my '17 Pacifica Touring. I got a $10,100 discount on a 2020 MDX Tech package and decided on Telluride. That was a hard deal to pass up but the MDX looks very 10 years ago. I've owned 5 and it's great but I've never liked the styling. I LOVE the Telluride and all of it's features.

If I trade, that $15K comes off the selling price of what ever model I get reducing my sales tax by 7.25% x 15K = $1087.

If the Kia dealer offers me only $14K, I'm still ahead by $87 in sales tax savings.

Not all states work this way and in the Buckeye Nation, it only works on new cars, not used cars.

I'm getting a white on butterscotch or dune brown if I get the prestige pkg. Wife and I ABSOLUTELY HATE black wheels and I will do something post-haste upon delivery. A dealer wheel swap would be ideal but won't happen with short supply. I may have them powder coated in silver or vinyl wrapped in silver or chrome or plasti dipped in silver.

If you were to buy from us I'd buy the black wheels/tires.

Thanks, this is why I am a Chatty Cathy.

A wheel trade would be a great option. Not sure of the logic of black wheels being "sporty" but that's all personal preference. Not my cup of Earl Grey.

I'm only 181 miles from Muncie, very easy to do an Enterprise one way rental which I have done several times before (I have owned over 50 cars).

Looks like we need to enter the cone of silence and do some private mesaging.
