If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... I've been looking for a Telluride for over a year and recently place an order for an SXP/N/T in Wolf Grey. I've found a match through the VIN lookup site that is incoming to a city nearby and they are asking for a $1600 markup, which isn't nearly as bad as the 10K markups at the local dealerships. I was set on waiting and paying MSRP, but am now tempted!

Any tips for negotiating, though doubting there is any room for that given the demand? I have a potential trade-in, but haven't decided what to do with that yet (2013 Subaru Outback). I'm open to financing or paying cash, is either option more beneficial as far as negotiating? TIA!

If I were you, I would start with deciding how much you're willing to pay over MSRP. If you get into a long negotiation and they don't budge, will you pay the $1600? Whatever the case, know what you're willing and not willing to do.

Don't listen to the members here who huffily declare that no-one should ever pay over MSRP and it's outrageous and etc etc. You get to decide what you want to do with your money. It's no-one else's business. I mean, I bought a cargo mat for $265 CAD. That's absurd! But I like it and I did. I'm about to shell out $1300 CAD for ceramic coating. Also absurd! This fixation on MSRP over all the other ways we spend money on our cars is kinda funny to me. Yah, depreciation, I get it. But also, let's look at the big picture.

Generally speaking, dealers are happier with financing. I wouldn't commit either way at the beginning of the negotiation. You could get to a point where you ask, perhaps once they settle on a "final" number, "And what would you take off that if I finance rather than pay cash?"

My dealer bought my trade-in for a good price. I also did my research there and decided what I would take and not take. That ended up being helpful.

Thank you, very helpful! Yes definitely need to consider the tradeoff of the minimal markup versus a 8 hour round trip drive, loss of weekend, waiting 3 additional months, etc. Also, already discussed being okay withy losing that much in trade-in versus trying to sell to private party.

Yah, lots of considerations here - time and money.

Once you post it on the internet it is everyone's business.
It becomes shared information, but not everyone's business. If you tell me what you paid for your car - either here in this forum or one-on-one over dinner - that becomes my knowledge but not my business. The phrase "no-one's business" refers to people meddling and passing judgment rather than providing help and input, as OP asked.

Hey @Samad3
This question comes up every now and then. Here is my feedback from a while ago, it still applies today. Pretty close to @YAH DEF feedback.

Good luck,
Z.

Taylor Thornton of White's Mountain Kia in Casper, WY should be on the top of your list if you want a 2021 Telluride at MSRP plus a $234 document fee. Very honest, transparent and no gimmicks, add on's or other hidden costs. His cell number is (307) 267-3576 and his email address is t.thor1224@gmail.com.
ETA is 8-12 weeks, but, he is cautioning folks it may take longer depending on if and how Covid may affect production and build times at the factory. Out of state is no problem as they are assisting me with shipping. I am from Washington and just ordered an AWD SX fully loaded. I spent a lot of hours searching for dealers in the Western US and 98% of them who would take an order quoted between $1500 and $12,500 above MSRP with some also requiring very expensive dealer add on's. I just happened to see Taylor's name briefly mentioned in an old forum post and that is how I found him.

If you are very picky on a certain color and package I would pay that amount. Think about the next time you will see that color with the options that you want. I spent time trying to find someone to sell at msrp and all the dealers that do already have 10+ people on a waiting list. You could always special order but do you want to wait 3-4 months? I paid 2.6k markup but in that fee they are putting on 3m film, all weather floor mats and some other small things all things that I don't care a ton about but they wouldn't budge. Should have it in 1-2 weeks.

Thanks everyone for your responses! I decided that the $1600 was worth it given a $500 rebate for financing some and the quicker timing for receiving the car. Alternative was to place an order, wait for it to be picked up, drive 3 hours to get it, dealer add-ons, etc. Lots of variables to consider, but super happy to report that I have picked it up my new Wolf Grey SXP today! I'm in love :) The VIN tracking website was super helpful in tracking and contacting all the local dealers that were expecting the model I wanted. Found an incoming unit and picked up within a week!

Hello,
Would you mind sharing the VIN tracking website information?

Thank you

I'm of the I'll never pay over MSRP crowd. At the end of the day, it's your choice how to spend money. I know of two dealerships in the St. Louis area who are more than willing to get you whatever you want at MSRP. You may have to wait for an order to come in, but you may get lucky (as I did) and catch them as one is getting off the truck. If you want it immediately, you're more likely to have to compromise. If you're willing to give it a couple of months and or willing to travel for it, MSRP is very easily doable.

Our 2020 EX broke down as follows:
MSRP: $38,800.00
Your Price: $36,300.00

At the time I think we even got a $200 gift card. After taxes, registration, and dealer fees we ended up financing just around the MSRP. Given all the experiences I’ve read about on this forum it seems as though we managed to score a deal.

Since your car is MY2020, did you buy this used or when it was first introduced? When dealers didn't know they can charge an arm and a leg for one. :) Regardless, you got a good deal on a new car.

It only took a few weeks after it first came out for the pricing to go over MSRP
