• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... For some reason my SX when I remote start it and open one of the back passenger doors the remote start will shut off like 10 seconds later. This is frustrating and does anyone know why it does this or how to disable it?

I noticed this today as I was loading my kids. Interested in knowing if this can be changed as well

Safety think about it. Sooner or later someone, likely a child get run over getting in while the car is still running and with no one in control. 'Nuf Said.

Yeah, put the key on the front seat first then open other doors.

It doesn't know that precisely (between front and second row seat) where the key is, you would just need to open the front door first. Then the rear doors.

While I can see this is a 'safety feature', arguments can be made either way.

Yep, my thought too. I did try it today and had the same result.

Other than getting in and just hitting the start button, what is the issue?

Pretty sure stepping on the brake is the takeover procedure after remote starting with your fob or Kia Access.

For parents with infants or toddlers, usually loading the kids into the back seat is priority. Especially when it is cold outside. There is a proximity sensor that will automatically takeover remote start when the remote fob is sensed nearby after one of the doors are open. Unless you have your keys in your pant pocket and are standing very close to the interior of the car though it has a very low chance of being detected, and the car will automatically shut off even though the 10 minute remote start timer has not elapsed.

One method I have done to avoid having the car shut off is to stay leaned into the back seat with the fob in my front pant pocket and watch for the auto takeover to occur before backing away.

Another method is while you are holding your car seat carrier or toddler, open the drivers door first partially sit and step on the brake pedal for takeover, then proceed with loading your kid.

Both these options avoid having to take the keys out of your pocket. If you leep your keys in a backpack or purse, and don’t want to toss the bag into the front seat, at least take it off your shoulder or back and leave it in the footwell of the backseat while you are loading your kid. Otherwise, the proximity sensor probably will have a harder time picking up a signal. and result in prematurely turning off the engine.

Lastly, if anybody is interested in the Accessorides remote starter (with takeover) for 2020 models, as long as you keep the back door (or any door) open, you can let the 15 minute starter timer elapse without any premature shutoff. (non-takeover version shuts off engine as soon as you open any door) Once you close a door though, you have 45 seconds to step on the brake pedal. The car will remain running even after 45 seconds if 15 minutes hasn’t elapsed, but once you open the door again to get in, it will shut off. Also opening a door shortly after closing another will continue to keep the car running. I think all doors need to be closed for about 10 seconds before the 45 second countdown begins. Plenty of time to get to the drivers door after I load my kids. If I load my kids and then start doing other errands though that takes a minute or longer (ie. water the lawn), it will shut off when I try to get in the car after. So overall, slightly advantageous to Kia remote starter for loading kids.

So annoying. If I remote start to warm up and then start loading the car I want it to keep running. I don't have kids.

It’s the way Kia has configured remote start for this vehicle. My Traverse had remote start but you could open any door and the vehicle would stay “running” but you couldn’t drive the vehicle until you got in the drivers seat, stepped on the brake and pushed the start/stop button. So basically the car was running but not drivable until certain steps were completed. The Telly remote starts and the vehicle is running and able to be driven without pushing the start/stop button. Seems the only way around this is to open the drivers door so at least the vehicle stays running while you load up

I also discovered when you remote start; you can open either the driver or passenger door first before you open any other door. Not that it helps any but if you want to warm the vehicle; you could open one of the front doors and just close them to the door sill with completely closing them and then load the kids, cargo etc.

Anyone else think the range for the remote start is horrible? I literally need to be no more than 20ft from the car to get it to start. I used to start my Terrain from my kitchen, the basement at work, from my bed room (opposite side of house) with no problem. I have to walk through my kitchen to the downstairs bathroom (my driveway is right outside the bathroom window) to start the Telly.

I think it’s fine 🤷‍♂️

This post inspired me to test my car's starting distance. With the car parked in my driveway, I could start it from my living room, but I wanted to see just what the LOS distance was that would allow me to still start it remotely. With the car parked in front of my garage, I walked to the end of my driveway then went across the street. I could lock and unlock the car, but the remote start did not work. Then I went to the end of my drive way and the remote start did work, but I measured the distance from where I was standing to the front of my car - it was 90 feet. I did not try to see if it would start from any further back, but mine will start from 90 feet for sure.

Anyone know where the signal for remote start goes to on the vehicle? I’ve had previous remote start vehicles that had a separate antenna that ran down the drivers side of the vehicle. You had great range from the drivers side and mediocre range from the passenger side. Just curious how the Telly gets the signal. UVO starts run through the antenna on the top rear of the vehicle so maybe the same is true for remote starts from the fob 🤷‍♂️

Holding the fob up to the under side of your bottom jaw will extend the range of your fob. About 250-300 ft line of sight.

And you'll get another 10 feet if you hold your tongue just right.

I have heard this before

I’ll try and get an exact distance. My main issue is doing it from inside the house where I throw my keys when I get home. It never works and it’s not that far from the car.

My .02. This car was designed from the onset to be an app related remote start and it looks to me that they quickly cobbled up an answer to those that demanded it on their fob and and didn't want to pay any additional fees. I've stated before that using the remote start from my phone improves it 100%. Sure it can be a bit laggy, but if your at work and you have the chance to heat up your car remotely, whats a few more seconds? What point is it walking out to a cold parking lot within distance to see it and then starting it?
