• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... Hi all,
We bought a Telluride sx and wanted to tow a travel trailer with gross weight just over 4000lbs. Has anyone had experience towing anything like this, yet? Any issues? Is 5000lb limit accurate? Does it tow well?
Thanks!

5000 lbs is the maximum. You'll need a 7-pin trailer harness and should also have weight distributing hitch and appropriate trailer brakes and controller.

I personally wouldn't really consider hauling much more than 3500 lbs with a Telluride, but that's me.

Cool. So you think pulling about 4200 is too much strain on the engine? Why is 3500 your cutoff?
Thanks!

With trailer about 4200 and then factoring in camping gear/clothing /supplies in the camper you could be right on the edge of the limit which could potentially end up having some situations where the camper feels like it is pushing the telluride and you don’t have as much control as you want. There are some members that have mentioned towing a light weight camper and hopefully they will chime in but haven’t heard of anyone towing so close to the max limit.

Because I really wouldn't want to push things to the limits

If you do everything just right, pushing to the limit could be fine. Make any mistakes and you could be in trouble...

I'm planning on eventually pulling a camping trailer with trailer brakes that's near the capacity limits. (Tongue weight is 500 lbs as well IIRC). I know it's ideal to stay well under the capacity, but I expect if they give you a limit that they feel the vehicle is safe and reliable up to that limit. But of course i'll take into consideration that we're near the limits and take appropriate caution with driving style.

In fact, the 5,000 lb capacity is one of the main reasons leading me to this telluride purchase. I'm currently in a Lexus RX and the limit is 3500 lbs and we're wanting to rent a camping trailer in July. We are looking at two trailers, one is 3600 and the other 4200, so the RX just couldn't do it. In addition, when we pull a utility trailer with the RX, the rear suspension sags and raises the front enough that some cars think we have our brights on.

I can’t tell you the amount of times I see some Expedition or Surburban trying to pull a decked out 30ft travel trailer (bumper pull at that 🤦‍♂️). It’s so damn hard on the vehicle and never mind dangerous to the occupants and anyone else they cross paths. I pass them quickly and hope they make it safely.

I tow a 3500 pound trailer that has a tongue weight of 470 pounds with a 2021 EX factory tow package. The sag on connecting the trailer is about 2 - 2 1/2 inches. After a mile the sag is an inch max due to the self height adjusting shocks. The Telluride tows great and the smart cruise control and lane control are great.

There's a lot to consider regarding safe towing.

It's good that you're asking the questions...

Maybe ask @2020Telly?
