If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... Where to find the OEM hitch?

Any ideas where to get the OEM Telluride hitch? I called the dealer and told them it seems to be backordered everywhere, and they said that they could get it in a couple days. Gave them my credit card and they banged it for $656.40 and I just noticed that the invoice says "backordered". Beyond pissed.

Cancel it either the polite way and tell them or the indirect way and tell the credit card company you were charged incorrectly. As far as finding one, let me take a look. I got mine on Ebay but it was from a dealer. Of course, this was before all the items becoming scarce.

Just took a quick look at the previous locations I purchased from and they are saying discontinued. Not sure what that means.

That is what I was seeing also, so I was surprised when the dealer said they can get it in two days, only for me to find out that it is backordered AFTER they banged my card.

If it just said "backordered" I would think it's just a supply vs demand thing. I remember noticing in failcat that the October 2020 production numbers were an all-time spike. I think for October 2021 the numbers were higher when compared to Sept and Nov. Not sure what it is about October, less time off with no vacations and holidays to compete with production? Might also be that Kia reports monthly numbers but they operate their fiscal year along the calendar year, so perhaps there is a priority to get more produced and delivered at the start of their Q4 before the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays in order to get the sale to count toward that fiscal year? I don't think auto manufacturers can recognize the revenue in their SEC reporting until the sale is complete and vehicle is delivered. So if it shows up on failcat in October the key might not actually end up in the buyer's hands until some time in November or a vehicle produced in December but delivered in January might count as a sale in the following year. The spike in production could mean a spike of people ordering the Towing Package on the EX and SX trims or the Tow Option on all four trims, so there are less left over tow hitches for the parts departments to sell?

However, the "discontinued" makes me also think they could be selling all of them out and waiting for a new supplier with licensing to make the OEM part for them. So we will see the same thing with a slightly different part number in 2022? Maybe doing away with the 4-pin plate on the 2022s since it's not needed? Maybe they got enough complaints about the hitch ball mount not properly fitting in the receivers so they are improving the quality control? The other possible explanation is that it is truly on a national backorder and some websites don't have that designation so they just use the word discontinued until it's back in stock.

I know some people are okay with the aftermarket hitch hanging lower and others prefer the OEM hitch with the bumper cover inlay. But there is a third option, the aftermarket hitch with the bumper cover. I don't think it looks bad, just different. If I were pressed for a towing solution but couldn't find an OEM hitch, I'd consider it.

Here's a place advertising what appears to be the Curt (because of the round safety chain loops and a dual 4-way and 7-way Hopkins:
It hangs lower than OEM hitch receiver but it still works and might provide a little more clearance. At the very least if you needed it now you could get the hard part done and then swap out the aftermarket hitch receiver for the OEM later if it really bugs you.

Just on cost this option saves you a couple hundred dollars.

Option 1 - All Kia
Kia OEM hitch
Kia OEM bumper cover
Kia 7-way only harness for $150 (or 4-way only harness)

Option 2 - All aftermarket
Curt, Draw-tite, Stealth, etc.
No bumper cover b/c it hangs lower
Aftermarket harness options

Option 3 - Hybrid (just a little more than all aftermarket)
Curt Hitch (13420) roughly $215
Kia Bumper Cover (S9F61 AU060) roughly $40-50
Aftermarket 4-way harness $40 with spliced $30 7-way plus wires and circuit breaker (or Kia 7-way $150 with 4-way $10 adapter)

The Kia OEM Hitch receiver does also come with a ball mount with no $10 ball, but if you don't already own one, you can buy a 2" square ball mount with ball for around $30.

Thank you for your input. Option 3 sounds attractive. How did you mount the 7pin socket and what is the part number?

I didn't actually do the work, I just found the picture after a google search, but if it's the Hopkins 47185 it comes with a metal bracket that likely can be mounted behind the bumper cover. The Curt 57672 also comes with a bracket.

UPDATE: I called around and found the OEM hitch in stock at one of the local dealers. So I picked that up, and went to the other dealer, and cancelled the back ordered one. I guess we are all good now. Thanks for everyone's input!
