While driving my 2020 Telluride AWD SX through the Natahala Gorge in North Carolina last week, I frequently down shifted to conserve my brakes. I never let the RPM exceed 5,000 RPM while descending steep grades. After a few minutes, I began to hear a whining sound that appeared to come from the transmission , transfer case, or differential. The sound grew louder over time and continued even after we were out of the gorge. The sound level was influenced by the amount, if any, of the gas pedal that was applied. The next day, I drove a few miles without down shifting and there was no whining sound. Later in the week, we reentered the gorge to return home and as soon as I made the first down shift, I could hear the whine sound return at a low level. I stopped down shifting at that point and never heard the sound again. I stopped at the KIA dealer in Murphy, NC and they indicated they would have to test drive and duplicate the noise inorder to determine the problem. None starter as we were headed home on a Friday afternoon. Since then, no more need to downshift and no more whine noise. I am wondering if anyone else has experience this problem? Is this something we should worry about? Many thanks for your inputs.
