• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... Wow, just learned that my 2024 cracked windshield will cost $3228. The glass is $2087. Learned that the lane departure/lane assist, condensation sensor, rain sensor and calibrations are part of this expense. Advise that other owners think about the insurance for windshield replacement service. I have $1000 deductible and thats what i will pay$$

You don't state if this is through the dealer or someone else. based on the price, I'm guessing through the dealer. We took a rock to our windshield (5 month old car) and got the windshield replaced at Safelite - they used Pilkington glass which is a quality supplier. IIRC the total was somewhere around $1700 but we got glass insurance this year and that covered the entire cost. The recalibration of the cameras/HUD/etc. was a bit tricky apparently, after the glass shop did it we had to have it redone at the dealer - they did not charge us.

Ya thanks for the comments. I have $1000 deductible and will use the dealership for the $3200. Mostly i have learned that the insurance company will get the costs back plus more with future high premiums. The car is only 8 months old and I want only the most qualified technicians possible. This stuff is so high tech now! Safelite is all over the internet but I was apprehensive. I thought bargain and low wage workers...avoid.

Just saw this thread and thought I'd share my recent experience. I replaced my windshield and the cost was $369. I did NOT have it calibrated. The installer told me that the local dealers charge $200 for calibration and that any dealer (make) could do it. Turned out I did not need re-calibration. Everything works just as it did before the replacement. The installer is a friend, so I trusted his advice.

Our dealer in Vancouver WA would not do class so we got another outfit that did a great job. We did ask for OEM glass only maybe thats why it cost more. I will keep it in mind next time this occurs and i did change my insurance to only $100 deductible for glass. OEM means original equipment manufacture not a knock off. Thanks for your thoughts.

Just a couple points for future readers clarification. Nothing wrong with your observations.

I just had my windshield replaced with aftermarket (NAGS) part and had the recalibration done. Cost me about $1,000 all in and reimbursed by my insurance.

OEM, O.E.M. means many things from as many different vendors as there are to sell you parts.
OEM: Original Equipment Manufacturer; is vary often applied to a part you're looking at. Such a label usually results in an increased sale rate for that particular part. However, many vendors have applied the term to just about any part. Example: (Forgive my analogy but I've spent 35+ years in the German car repair industry)

2003 3 series front lower control arm. The arm was/is produced by Lemforder to BMW and the BMW genuine replacement parts. Most websites also show the TRW control arm. AND it's labeled OEM...Huh?
Just being very clever. TRW IS an OEM supplier. HOWEVER they NEVER supplied that arm to BMW. They do supply arms and steering components to BMW albeit on later model cars. The arms do work but don't fit as well, nor do they last as long. The website didn't lie to you however they twisted the meaning, in the interest of sales.

The same happens in the Asian car world with brands such as Koyo and Toyoda (not a typo) parts pieces.

There once was a time when buying any part labeled OEM most usually meant you received the same part, just in a different box and at a vary different price. Not so much anymore. I digress....
