Canadian 2021 Telluride

After talking to different dealers and doing a lot of my own research when I bought my Telluride in February 2020, here is how the ordering process works in Canada for the Telluride (which is different than in the USA):

1- Contrary to the US, dealers are not assigned a predetermine numbers of units depending of their past sales performance.

2- There are almost no Tellurides on the dealers lot. Usually you can test drive a demo Telluride which is driven daily by the sale manager.

3- When you are ready to buy, you will negociate the price at that time and you leave a reimbursable $500 deposit and they will order exactly what you want. You can cancel your order at any time.

4- If a new discount promotion from Kia Canada is available between when you leave the deposit and pick-up your Telluride, they will be able to apply this promotion.

5- It is with the client credit check and the $500 deposit that the dealer is allowed to order a specific Telluride for a specific client.

6- Kia Canada will then look at what's available in Canada and will either find an existing Telluride or order the exact model requested. The dealer told me it would take a maximum of 3 months. In my case it was less than 2 months in February 2020 (Black SX).

7- When a Telluride is found, the VIN will be given to the client. If no Telluride is found a custom order will be done and the VIN will be given to the client once the VIN is known. Normally it takes about 1 months after the VIN is produced for a new custom order and the time the Telluride is delivered to the dealer in Canada.

8- The dealer will contact the client when he receives his Telluride.

I think doing this if more fair for the customer that doing it like they do in the US. In the US there are a lot of bad dealers that receive a lot of Prestige Tellurides for which they charge over $5000 above MSRP.

I have found the following post in which you see a Canadian VIN, but that VIN does not show any dealer like in the US.

In my area, I have always found that the dealers have two or three Tellys on the lot. The dealership I purchased from currently has four, with another on the way. It's always worth checking. And they're at MSRP - with extravagant dealer fees around me anyway. I got mine $1250 under MSRP but paid close to that for their insane document fee and add-ons, like nitro and etching. I figured I would take that.

Overall, this does seem like a simpler and more fair system. The delays for those who order also seem to be shorter than many US friends have reported here.

Come to think of it, I also think the Telly is cheaper here.

My dealer took $2500 as a non-refundable deposit.
I even asked for a refund after a week but they refused.
I googled up and found out that in Canada deposits are not legally refundable. A dealer may do so out of good will. Most I called around Toronto had a tester or demo in stock. Some were willing to sell.
I was told two to three months wait which I figured would be ok as we are in a lock down anyways.
Why pay lease for a few months while the cars sits in the garage.

I'm in BC.

I also ordered a white SX, but with black interior.

I ordered on December 29th. Maybe I'll get my vin in a week. I was told a 4-6 weeks delivery.
I ordered (SX Pre) thru a local dealer (Midwest) on November 23, now waiting for the VIN number, was told 4 months.

I’m from Montreal . Left a 500$ deposit. Ordered a nightsky on the 20th of October 2020. In November I emailed the dealer to know when I would be getting my telluride and was told December or January the latest. So now we’re in January nothing yet. I don’t know if I should call them or patiently just wait it out until the end of this month . Don’t even know if the lockdown might be the cause for delays in delivering the vehicle.

Got the call this week that my Telluride is being shipped, they indicated it could be here in a couple weeks. This seems quick from what I'm reading here, should I really be expecting 3-4 weeks instead? In any case this is faster than I anticipated having ordered at the end of November, I need the time to sort out winter tires, etc.

I think night sky orders are delivered in about a month. Others could easily take 5 months.
and in Canada you are at the mercy of dealer after you put your deposit.

In Alberta, the dealers we spoke with did not have any inventory on their lots. Most had a “ demo” available for a test drive, either one of their own or a previous trade in. In other words, not for sale. Our dealer told us ours would be a factory order when we put down our deposit on Dec. 21 2020. He said to expect two to three months. We got our VIN Jan 12. When I looked at the Failcat site, of course our number didn’t show up, but fit into the sequence of numbers Kia allocated on January 9.
Our dealer said to expect delivery in three to four weeks ( February 2 to 9 ) since our VIN was created......hopefully.
We actually aren’t in a rush and only ordered in December to avoid potential price increases or any possible Govt. tax increases.
This Telluride is the replacement for our ‘05 Honda Pilot that was destroyed when we hit a three year old Bull moose on October 11, 2020.

One thing I have been wondering about is why don’t we get the same warranty coverage in Canada as they get in the USA. Specifically, the power train warranty in Canada is 5 year - 100,000 km and the US versions get 10 year - 100,000 mile (160000 km)?
This isn’t just a Kia phenomenon as the Dodge Ram 3500 we bought in 2017 was affected similarly, with reduced power train warranty. As these are very expensive to repair we opted to buy a seven year bumper to bumper. But with COVID, the truck sits in our driveway with nowhere to go. ( It’s a dedicated RV tow unit and we are snowbirds, but with clipped wings for now ).

Yah, I have no idea about that. My understanding is that the US warranty is also short on the electronics parts though, as ours is. I bought an extended warranty myself, as it's always worked out well for me to do so with cars. But I now wish I had negotiated the cost a bit. I didn't realize at the time that it's possible to do that.

What sort of cost and length of time did you take? I think we paid $2300 for the extra three years on our Ram bumper to bumper 70,000 km warranty. Our concerns were like yours....electronics. I am not worried about the Cummins diesel in our Ram. I know it is low total Kms , but as I mentioned, we don’t drive it much. We were able to get $200 off suggested price, after the original truck deal.

What trim did you order?

White SX with espresso brown. No tow or anything else. We didn’t want the second row buckets plus didn’t want the HUD windshield due to prohibitive cost to replace it. As we live in a relatively rural Alberta community, our glass deductible is about equal to two years premium! Lots of gravel roads plus a lot of farming and resource extraction going on, dragging lots of debris onto the highways.

I got 10 year/200,000 km. I'm planning on keeping the car and I generally put about 20k on a year. I forget the specific cost, but it was over $3000.

Gord, use the little Reply option on the bottom right of someone's post when you reply to specific people. Then they get an alert. 👍

The best price we found was $3000 for 8 years, what dealer did you get yours at?

Georgetown. I think that's where you ordered? At the time, I didn't think to ask for a better price.

Thanks for the info. We are like you and keep our vehicles for at least 10 years, although we don’t typically put a lot of Kms each year. Even though I’ve been retired 15 years, I still do a little construction consulting each summer and use my old ‘03 Ford pickup for work. We also inherited our son in laws Honda CRV as our city run around. we will use this vehicle until our granddaughter is ready to drive, when she will get it. Yes, our insurance agent sends us a Christmas card each year.

Ha! We have three cars on insurance. Costs a fortune, as one is a teenage boy.

A CRV is what I traded in for this Telly.
