After talking to different dealers and doing a lot of my own research when I bought my Telluride in February 2020, here is how the ordering process works in Canada for the Telluride (which is different than in the USA):
1- Contrary to the US, dealers are not assigned a predetermine numbers of units depending of their past sales performance.
2- There are almost no Tellurides on the dealers lot. Usually you can test drive a demo Telluride which is driven daily by the sale manager.
3- When you are ready to buy, you will negociate the price at that time and you leave a reimbursable $500 deposit and they will order exactly what you want. You can cancel your order at any time.
4- If a new discount promotion from Kia Canada is available between when you leave the deposit and pick-up your Telluride, they will be able to apply this promotion.
5- It is with the client credit check and the $500 deposit that the dealer is allowed to order a specific Telluride for a specific client.
6- Kia Canada will then look at what's available in Canada and will either find an existing Telluride or order the exact model requested. The dealer told me it would take a maximum of 3 months. In my case it was less than 2 months in February 2020 (Black SX).
7- When a Telluride is found, the VIN will be given to the client. If no Telluride is found a custom order will be done and the VIN will be given to the client once the VIN is known. Normally it takes about 1 months after the VIN is produced for a new custom order and the time the Telluride is delivered to the dealer in Canada.
8- The dealer will contact the client when he receives his Telluride.
I think doing this if more fair for the customer that doing it like they do in the US. In the US there are a lot of bad dealers that receive a lot of Prestige Tellurides for which they charge over $5000 above MSRP.
I have found the following post in which you see a Canadian VIN, but that VIN does not show any dealer like in the US.
