Hi all,

Wife and I decided on Telluride Nightfall, but I know production times are upwards of 4-6 months for a custom order and we wanted to buy exactly what we wanted. It looks like summer 2020 is when 2021 models were announced, with Nightfall packages later in the year (just going off of internet announcement postings). What I was wondering is, what happens to your car if 2022 production begins in the summer while you're waiting for your 2021 to be made? Do you just get a 2021 model anyway? Do they shift production to a 2022 model? I would hate to order a 2021 and be basically among the last to get a 2021 as 2022 drops.

Thanks much for any help!

If 2020/2021 is any indication. Your order will be rolled over to 2022 once 2022 begins to build. You will have to pay any additional price difference.

This happened to me last year April. Dealer notified me that KIA was going to stop 2020 then switch to 2021 and because I was one of the last one they gave me the option either 2020 or 2021but thanks to this forum I knew I was better off with a 2021 due to some upgrades like remote start on the fob. Based on my experience I believe it will depend on where you are in the process that is if it's already been accepted for production and other things. Hope this helps

You are at the mercy of the production line. You will get whatever comes off the lines 2021/2022 when it is your time. ** and the associated price increase**

What do you mean by this? From what I've seen, it sounds like like Nightfall is being prioritized (which makes sense, it's $1300 for different colored trim, probably almost pure profit), and people with non-Nightfall orders are waiting extra long.

Thanks all for the info!

I just meant that in 2020 summer when the 2021 was announced, articles just said the Nightfall was coming later in the year. Not a comment about current production priorities, sorry for the miscommunication.

Thanks for your experience. Just to clarify, did you order in April and then they updated you later or you ordered earlier in the year and they updated you in April? I'm sure release times will vary year to year but trying to get a sense of when 2022 would be.

I ordered in April then around end of July they updated me.

The statement that Nightfall version is being prioritize is not accurate any longer. Around July/August/September it was the case as KIA had just restarted production (after shutting down for the pandemic), had a big production backlog and wanted to have the Nightfall edition out on the streets. Otherwise, they wouldn't have many Nightfall built until the backlog had been cleared. However, as production picked up, there is no difference anymore from non-Nightfall SX and Nightfall SX. This had been documented in many thread here in the forum. There might be a week in which more Nightfall are built but that is just because the factory builds them in batches.

There is a difference, however, between the SX models and the non-SX model which you can get in as little as 2 months.

Sorry, one more question I just thought of - when you were offered the opportunity to upgrade, did you get to choose options again or were you locked into your 2020 choices?

No worries at all. My options were already locked in. When I tried to make changes, they said it will push my ETA back so I decided against making those changes.

Any word on changes or updates on the 2022 model?

I wouldn't expect anything major for 2022. It's only the third model year of an immensely popular vehicle. Maybe some slight package changes or color adjustments would be my guess. I'd expect to see a moderate refresh for 2023 or 2024.

I just spoke w/ Abeloff Kia, basically confirmed all the above - not a lot of new things expected for 2022, though no one knows for sure. If you're still in line when production changes, you get a 2022 with price difference. He wasn't sure exactly what happens with options being locked in when production changes, though he guessed that it would be hard to change your options once the order was put in. Last year he noted production changed in August, though that's not what we've seen here.

Not that I know of. Some rumors but nothing confirmed.
I like rumors

My wife and I decided on 21 Telluride SX Nightfall with Prestige back in October 2020. For us, the delivery time was estimated 6-8 months, with comments referencing potential 10-12 months but unlikely. We were told then that we might get a 22’ depending on the timing. I called about a week ago for a status check and ours still hasn’t hit production. Again, we were told that there might be an opportunity for a 22’. What we were told is that if they pull our order into production late enough (e.g., close enough to 22‘ drop), we will likely get a 22’. We were informed that there might be a price adjustment but usually a few hundred dollars if any. Plus, we would have options to choose whether we want the vehicle or not depending on any configuration changes that might be discontinued or added in the new year (i.e., exterior color no longer offered, etc.). Our preference is exactly the same, we would hate to have waited this long and paid the same as to what would be considered “an older year” compared to a 22’. Not that the 22’ will have significant changes, but there usually some refinements and maybe an additional upgrade. Upon my previous searches, it was Spring/Summer time when Kia has dropped their 19’ and 20‘. I have the same question, when does Kia shift production - what is that cut off for orders on a previous year to kick over to the next year model?

you will get 2022, perhaps the dealer will ask for a surcharge if the price changes. I ordered in April 20 model 20, received in August 21 without any additional payments. In any case, your deposit is refundable, if the price changes and you are not satisfied, take the deposit.

Thanks for sharing your experience. The dealer I am talking to is taking deposits but he said they are non refundable so people don’t go to multiple dealerships and place orders.
