If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... Cold start screeching noise

I have the exact same issue. Kia Telluride SXP. I live in Vermont (cold weather). Left the car with the dealership and got a message that they are contacting the Kia engineers and that the sound is coming from the intake. The car has 1000 miles on it owned it for less than a month.
Thanks for sharing the information, I'm from central NY, same cold as your location. My dealership also suspects it's from intake manifold but they were not able to find exact position. It seems that Kia only reimburses warranty work if the dealership can find exactly which part makes the noise. Kia is not sending out engineers due to COVID. Another thing I found is that the noise disappear if I rev up the engine, so I suspect it's somehow related with vacuum leak, when the weather is cold the gasket might not seal well which cause some leak in the initial 30 second, once the manifold warms up the seal is back to normal.

I have a brand new 2021 Telluride. Bought it at the end of December 2020. It only has 1800 miles on it. It is 30 degrees out this morning and when I cranked the car it may a high pitched squilling sound this morning. My daughter and I also smelled what smelled like oil. It was so weird.

Thanks for sharing your story, it seems to have more and more people report this problem, if you can report this to your dealership and ask them to contact Kia that would be a good way to let Kia realize the problem. I did smell burning & hot oil smell when I had the car first month, maybe the parts in engine bay are still break in.

IF, it becomes a large enough issue to warrant a claim (and this may be applicable more to owners than leasers, and it's tied to Canada as we don't have a Lemon Law here), if you can't get satisfaction from the dealer and Kia Customer Support, your next step is to take it to CAMVAP for arbitration. Canadian owners need to know of this organization, as most car manufacturers selling vehicles in Canada participate in it... with the recent departure of Chystler (with the formation of Stellantis, this January, FCA/Stellantis bailed out of the agreement and owners of their vehicles are left without any recourse than taking things to court personally). Anyway, I digress.... here's the link to CAMVAP's website, and Canucks... you need to pay the site a visit. Kia is a member.

Had a chance today to record the noise, it's 23F outside, the noise seems to come from the engine (IMG_4895.mp4), have you guys heard this from your Telluride?
Another service is scheduled on next Wed, but it won't be cold enough then, I will show them the video.
it is a 100% bearing inside. Pulley or camshaft or water pump bearing.

OK so my Telluride has been in dealership the 2nd time, they just told me the noise is not long enough to diagnose, technician suspects it's from engine intake manifold or around it but cannot find the point, so in this way Kia won't reimburse any parts/labor. I also called the Kia customer support and it has no help, simply said if dealership cannot find the source of the problem, they have nothing to do. Both side are telling me to live with a problem that is related with engine, until it get worse or break down. Totally disappointed.
It is not right. This sound is not normal or specific to this engine. So this is a defect and you, as a client, do not care that they cannot find the reason. Can't find what's whistling, change the whole engine, the whole car. Find a car expert witness, do an independent report and sue Kia.

I got my Telluride back yesterday. They said they changed the belt and it is fixed (they also started it without a belt to check). It has been with them since last Sunday. Started it up today and it is still howling. 1060 miles on the car and every time I start it I wake up the neighbors. Called them back today and I am waiting for an answer. Will update the post as soon as I have more information.

Apparently it’s something more than belt, pulley, tensioner etc. I would say it’s like boiling kettle, especially when you have the hood open and hear it next to the engine. Your dealership swapped belt because the part and labor are not expensive, they can get reimbursement from KIA or simply average to other profits, but unfortunately you still hear the same thing. Thanks for sharing and I hope you can get some answer. You can try revving the engine to see if that noise changes.

it was -27 tonight, the car spent the night on the street. The first two minutes, the car worked with the same whistle, only quieter.

This organization is funded by dealers, do not go there. go straight to court, as I did. We don't have lemon law, but we do have negligence and misleading.

Sometimes louder sometimes quieter, depends on how long the car has been left outside garage. Now every time I see a Telluride on street I want to ask hey, did your hear any weird noise this morning when you start the car? Have you checked this with your dealership? This noise should be more common in Canada given the weather.

Today is the first time, it will be even colder with us for 2 more nights, I will leave it outside and watch. It doesn't bother me too much, because I don't keep the car for long. But as an aircraft engine engineer, it's even interesting for me to observe and understand. In general, I have an idea why this is happening - a very elastic metal (soft). Therefore, whoever buys a used one or without a factory warranty, I would recommend refraining, as it is fraught with expensive repairs.

We have had our 2021 Telly for 6 months. Live in Kansas where this week it has gotten down to below 0 temps and additional 8 to 10 degrees colder with wind chill and no garage. Only starting in the morning and after sitting 12 hours, the engine whines or squeals for about 20 seconds then purrs like a kitten. Done it 5 out of 5 mornings this week. Thinking oil so think that oil pump takes that much time to push the thick oil through the engine. Once it’s started for the day it has no issues. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Welcome to the thread, you're not alone, we have people from central NY, VT and Canada reporting the problem, first time know that Kansas can be such cold. Unfortunately I haven't got any solution yet, my dealership wasn't able to find the source of the noise because it doesn't last long enough, KIA is of no help. Thought the noise is annoying, it doesn't affect anything else and disappears after 1 min, no warning, no codes. If you hear similar sound as I posted in this thread, I can tell you this is not from belt, PVC, and this engine has no secondary air injection. The dealership mechanic suspected it's from intake manifold, but cannot be located. This morning I found that the noise disappeared if I shift to reverse and back up, once shifted back to drive it returned. I think it might be related with brake booster which uses engine vacuum from intake manifold, I will apply brake pad while the car is still in park next time to see if it changes the noise.

Mine is going back to the dealer next week. I did change the air filter with an aftermarket one last week and it did not make any sound for 2 days in a row, the third day it made the sound in the morning and after work as well (only made sounds in the morning previously). It has something to do with the air intake. I am worried that it is going to turn into a different and expensive type of issue.

Thanks for the suggestions! I will record the sound before the service, actually 'We cannot duplicate the problem' is something that worries me more. Tried to find some videos about slipping belt, but it sounds intermittent or rhythmic, yet the noise from my car is high piuntch and continuous, that makes me suspect about the belt. It seems to be a quite common thing on Kia models but I haven't seen it from Telluride, I live in Central New York where temperature varies a lot in a year and winter could be very cold, typically the colder the weather, the louder/longer the noise, but only happens in cold morning.
Ok...just thinking.....I am in central Pa. and temps have been around 10 to 20 for the past few days, have none of the issue that you are describing.....so my guess is that there is something else "going on" that does indeed need Kia tech support. Sorry you have to be dealing with this.....today's cars are wonderful things until something like this happens! Keep us up to date!

Simple question, is your car parked in a garage or driveway/street?

Driveway....and have started the vehicle at single digit temps...

Just listened to the sound clip again. I hear the noise and after that hear the noise faintly. If the noise was in the engine you would find metal shaving in the oil filter. My guess is bearing in one the pulleys or bracket being a tad lolose and vibrating.
