Cold start screeching noise

Well, good to know that your vehicle works just fine, it's must be a case sensitive issue.
 
here in Calgary it is freezing at 30. Last week and this week I put it on the street, for the whole time I whistled a couple of times. But the sound is like a tractor every time. Well, this is understandable, what else to expect from aluminum - a very high compression / expansion ratio.

So I'm surprised that the dealer is not fixing the issue. If this was a BMW, they would fix it immediately...........so this is what i'm nervous about. In about 10days I will own a Kia which has nvr been a car that I thought I would ever own. Have a x5 that is now old but when it was new and under 4yr 50k mile warranty, they covered it bumper to bumper. So any weird noise or any electronic or thing you guys are describing would be covered, no questions asked.

Kia is not a BMW. And the Kia also has a guarantee. But the price of Kia is not like BMW, which means that the manufacturer needs to save somewhere. No, no, everything is in order with the materials, but everything is mediocre with the guarantee, because any warranty repair increases the cost for the manufacturer. In general, if you are lucky, everything will be fine, but if not, an amazing adventure awaits you in upholstering the dealer and manufacturer's thresholds.
 
I had a buddy who is good with cars and an engineer. He said belt and pulleys look good. He was unable to remove the engine cover because on the negative temps but he said his research points to intake manifold. Said once the engine heats up it forces the seal to expand and sealing up the leak. Definitely thinks the extreme cold causing the seal to leak possibly making it need tightening. Said he has heard this kind of sound in older vehicles when intake was failing. Said he did not think it will hurt the engine in the short term and good chance it will go away once temps go back up to normal out of the negative. Still think Kia needs to look into it seriously. Bad thing is we are 2 hours away from a dealer.

The thought is the leak stops once the seal heats up and reseals itself. Either a gasket problem or the metal shrinks from the cold and expands from the heat.

Same thought here, but I suspect Kia will allow your dealership to open the air intake, no dealer is willing to perform such inspection without Kia's guarantee on reimbursement, unfortunately this is how Kia handles warranty works.

-24 below here this morning, our telly is not garaged, and I heard this screech this morning as it struggled to start and stay running initially. It definitely doesn't sound like a belt at all. Will mention it when it goes in for service on Friday, but none of our cars sound great when you first start them when it's this cold, our old pilot made terrible noises on first starts in the winter as well... There's no check-engine light, so I'm not too worried about it...

I recorded the sound and texted it to my Kia dealer. I have spoken with several people and after hearing the sound they think it may be the intake manifold. I have watched the video several times and the belt and pulleys all seem to be working fine. Also, on my video, as soon as the sound goes away, you can hear the engine gain more power. It all seems to point to a bad seal. Once the dealer has a chance to watch the video I hope to hear back. I got a great 30 second video that you can hear the noise very clear and I videoed the engine while it made the noise.

Do you mind to share your video? Please ask your dealership to report this problem to Kia, we need to make Kia admit there is something wrong in the intake manifold and the problem is in both 20 and 21 models. Thanks!

Please, bring this problem to your service department and ask them to contact the headquarter, Kia needs to understand this is not an uncommon problem. Thanks!
 
For owner with the cold start noise problem, please report the problem to NHTSA if you can, I have done so and passed their review process. I'm not sure the procedure in Canada, but US owners should be able to report. You need to upload evidence with your complaint, I used a pdf with link to my video.

The NHTSA has a lot more pull/push than owners taking their vehicles in for this problem. Besides nothing lost by submitting issues to the NHTSA than your time

I have tried to download the 30 second video but cannot get the web page to download a video from my phone and the file is too big to email to my computer. I would love to get this out there but not sure how.
