• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... Auto open is a great feature, BUT I also have my hands full when emptying the rear hatch! Would be nice if it also sensed that I'm no longer in front of the liftgate and closed itself.

Agreed. Most modern vehicles with a "smart lift gate" uses an infrared or radar type sensor under the rear bumper to open and close the lift gate. The Telluride uses a proximity sensor to open.

I thought about having this installed in my S. Anyone know the cost or hassle?

I have to imagine it would require quite a few panels to come off to get everything wired up from the tailgate to the dash. Taking dashes apart is how you get rattled that never go away. While the powered lift gate is nice to have I’m still in the fence about the smart tailgate. It takes quite a few seconds to open and I’ve had it initiate while just standing behind the rear with the key in my pocket.

I thought it was neat, but honestly, it scares me and I might turn it off. The other day we were coming back from a walk and I went to open the garage using the keypad on the outside of the door. All of the sudden... I hear my car beep from inside and run away (my wife laughs at me). I am not sure if it would have actually tried. Not sure if it can sense that there is a door inches from it. But it started the 'get out of the way I am about to open'. But there was a darn garage door in the way! I am scared it might try and open into it.

I prefer the kick under sensor on my wife's CRV personally.

You got three beeps plus a second or so....

are you saying it would open and hit the garage doors if you walked by the door?
Yup, that is exactly the reason why I keep my smart lift gate function off.

Then that is useless feature. My garage doors are manual and I have to stand behind the car to open/close doors.

Only if you park in a garage with a low ceiling. If you always park outdoors unintended opening of the rear hatch will not be a problem.

I am saying it is doing this THROUGH the garage door. The door is shut. Car is inside. I am outside the garage. It senses me a d tries to open. The lift gate while the garage door is shut. It would open right into it 6-10 inches behind the car.

Yup, that's what radio frequency does....again, that's why I deactivate smart lift gate because I park inside the garage.

If you park inside the garage but leave the car unlocked it won't go off. I believe it only works when the doors are locked.

While we love the car the smart tailgate feature makes no sense. The tailgate opened when my wife and kid were standing behind the car waiting to cross the street. Depending how close to the street the car is parked this could end up with an accident. We turned the feature off and don’t plan on ever turning it on again.

Agreed. Just not well thought out. It should require some intent other than just being around the car to open.

Do you guys think this can be fixed with a software update. This really doesn’t make sense, I walk behind closed garage doors all the time:

This is what I am worried about, the lift gate opening in the garage or when I park it at work

Have it on the Sorento and Stinger. Love the fact that when my hands are full that I don't have to try and balance on 1 leg (suffer from vertigo) to open the trunk or try and get a key out of my pocket. If you are 3 steps away, it won't open or off to the side. I happen to prefer this over anybody else's design. It won't open if the doors are unlocked so we never lock our doors when it's in the garage.

I like the feature. I understand the frustration of others who find it opens needlessly, as I have walked by the vehicle and heard the beeps and know it is coming even when I did not intend it. I simply step away from the vehicle before the third beep and it does not open. When shopping it has been a very welcome feature as I return to the vehicle with my hands full.

Same here, except when I was washing the vehicle and couldn't wash the rear with the key in my pocket. I tried to unlock the door (as the smart liftgate is disabled when doors are unlocked), but when unlocked with the fob, the doors would lock back a few seconds later and then the smart liftgate would become active again.
