Just did our first trip towing a 20’ R-Pod. Was lucky to get 16MPG. Towed ok, but even with the self-leveling shocks the front end felt a bit lite. Also it gets real “interesting” when there are gusty conditions. Most of the time I cruised at 65mph but there were times the wind in the open areas of Arizona were very gusty and I did not feel safe above 55. Honestly this is about as big as I’d feel comfortable towing with my Telly.

Dry weight just under 3000 lbs. We kept water empty till we got to site. As loaded I’d estimate we were around 3150.
 
Basil. Thanks for sharing and thank you for the pics. I have never had a self-leveling feature before, so, if you don’t mind, I have a few questions. How well does it handle without the wind? Have you had anything with a similar feature from the past that you can compare to the Telly? Were you carrying any (noticeable) extra weight in the Telly cargo area? Same question with the trailer (anything that could have possible shifted that could have affected the handling in the wind)?

My biggest problem when towing with my old Pilot was the weight shifting. Have not pulled anything with the Telly, yet.

Handled pretty good in light to moderate winds, just got a little scary with higher gusty winds. Gas mileage was only about 15-16MPG. We were not carrying much extra weight. Maybe a 150 lbs. I’ve never towed anything but a 10ft utility trailer with my old Santa Fe so probably not a good comparison.

Trailer dry weights typically are not just no water. They are also no batteries, no propane, no options, etc. Depending on the manufacturer, even a spare tire is an option. Now Forest River actually issues a "UVW" (unloaded vehicle weight), this is much more accurate, but does not include any dealer added options.


Every truck stop has a certified scale. For under $15, you can get a real weight. Be sure to weigh twice so you include the tongue weight too. That axle is pretty far back on that trailer, which can lighten tongue weight. Not enough tongue weight can make a trailer much more subject to swaying. I see typical recommendations of 13% of the total trailer weight on the tongue. Receiver height can be a contributing factor as well. Tongue up will tend to be too little tongue weight.
