15,000 mile oil change

Well, I've got oil for the next 4 years now. I found it for $12 for each 5 quart jug.

I was gonna use Costco's Kirtland Full synthetic oil, but this has ACEA A5/B5 certification , the Kirtland oil doesn't.

Mobile 1 is all I use these days.

Did an oil change and tire rotation today. Used a OEM filter and Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 10w30 oil. 5w is good to -22 degrees and 10w is good to 0 degrees. I used 10w this time since it offers more protection in the warmer months.I follow a guy called Project Farm on YouTube and he did a oil tournament and Amsoil was #1 and Pennzoil was #2.

I have read some good reviews on the Ultra Platinum on Bob's the oil guy forum. Some members on the oil forum says it's an overkill. For a few bucks more that's fine. They feel the Pennzoil Platinum oil will meet manufactures specifications. It's a few bucks cheaper. I have never been a Pennzoil user always Mobil 1.
I have used Ultra Platinum the last 3 oil changes and I'm happy with it. No significant improvements in the Telluride. The Envoy it's night and day difference in engine noise is so much quieter.

I'm sure as you get more miles, a higher quality oil makes more of a difference. When they are new and start with good oil, it probably also helps things last longer...especially if you end up forgetting to change the oil for a few thousand miles.

I agree with @Senator20 that the Project Farm youtube videos on oil tournament were fascinating. I watched all the videos. I came across them when researching Castrol as that is the brand my mechanic uses.

Growing up, my dad taught me how to work on cars and we always used Pennzoil. He started using Mobile 1 within the last 8 years to save money. His cars are knocking a lot more than they used to.

My other cars are all being switched to Castrol (came in 3rd or 4th with Kendell). I haven't decided if I will go with Castrol or Pennzoil for the Telly (only 380 miles so far). I figure the small financial difference in a higher quality oil will likely pay off in long term maintenance.

Personal opinion - Castrol is great for European makes using odd grades.

Pennzoil for domestic, Korean, Japanese and some of the European vehicles using more “standard” oil grades.

I used to use Mobil1, but have been impressed with the Pennzoil so sticking with it.

If you Google for information on it, it's a bit of a mystery... I know one person who says they have to Tellurides, built 1 month apart and one has the menu item the other doesn't. I've seen people claim that it's somwhow related to the trim level you have, but that seems debunked as well.

On page 4-77 of my owners manual, it says this... "To use the service interval menu, consult and authorized Kia dealer."

To me, that basically says Kia has to enable that feature. However, in my Google searchs , people have claimed they have gone to their dealers and they have been told they know nothing about it.

I guess I should contact my dealer and find out what they have to say. But then, I more or less made up my mind, that the default 7500 mile interval was actually not a bad thing. I plan on changing my oil every 5,000 miles, but if should get busy, I wouldn't be concerned about occasionally going out to 7,500 miles, so I view the 7,500 mile interval as a backup reminder to change my oil.

Did you ever get this resolved I also can not change my service interval on my EXP.

Now I'm coming from years of BMW, Audi and Lexus ownership and I find it really hard to believe that conventional is recommended by a manufacturer given lubrication technology has come so far.

I would strongly question that dealer’s service department. The manual recommends Total Quartz which is synthetic. The only way I would consider a conventional oil in this GDI engine is if I stuck to oil changes every 5,000 miles or less. I’m doing every 7,500 miles and I can’t see doing that with anything but synthetic. I’m about to get my 5th oil change. In my Hyundai Elantra with a smaller version GDI motor I’m doing oil changes every 10,000 miles with full synthetic.

No. This is why the manual just has a section that suggests if your regular driving conditions/environment warrant more frequent oil changes, to do so according to their recommended schedules.

For example, driving over 106 mph regularly means you gotta replace a bunch more fluids and oils. Ahem @DarkMossJustin .

Easy as pie.
I installed the plug as such that I never have to take off the skid plate again...yes I do just kidding to get the oil filter off.

Sure the oil change cost me $100ish but I took it for a spin and the engine is running like butter.
