In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. After reading threads here and watching some YouTube videos, I've still come out of this confused if a 2021 Telluride is easy to wire up to a 7-pin connector.

I just picked mine up and the tech that did the install had no clue if it would work, though he did wire up to a 15-amp.fuse from the battery. He had a 20-amp fuse in stock so I made him change to that.

I bought a Curt Echo wireless controller from them and the tech had no clue if it would work. Kept confusing my questions if I tap in the brakes, is the 7-pin connector properly wired so the wireless controller will tell my trailer that it should brake? He didn't know!

I waited for his manager and I asked them to test the voltage when I stepped on the brakes and that was inconclusive. He admitted he doesn't know how the Curt Echo works and couldn't affirm that when I press the brakes that the trailer will brake! WTF? Going to this Uhaul feels like a huge mistake.

I'm supposed to pick.up a camper this Friday from a dealer that's 8-hours away.

any suggestions on what I can do to test if the brakes.will work without having the trailer would help. U-haul said they had no trailers with electric brakes.

Not testing this and being sure it works is like writing a bunch of code without testing if it runs. Infuriating.

Did they install the Kia 2021 7-pin harness? I'm guessing not since you mentioned a fuse from the battery.

Is it too late to ask for a refund and have them remove what they installed?

The 2021 Telluride is very easy to add a 7-pin harness IF you use the 7-pin Kia harness. It's a very easy DIY that requires just a screwdriver. Also the Kia 7-pin harness connects right to the 2021 Telluride's vehicle harness and uses fuses already present in the fuse box. If they spliced into your vehicle harness for the brake signal using a generic 7-pin harness there is no telling what they did.

If you have a multi-meter, touch the black lead to ground pin 1, then the positive to each of the other connectors as you go through the test. 2 should signal when you press the brakes, 3 when you turn on the lights, 4 should be hot all the time since you said the signal is going to your batter, 5 when you turn left signal on, 6 when you turn right signal on, and 7 when you put it in reverse.

I'm not sure what they did because the tech claimed he just did what his manager said, and didn't elaborate. No messing around in the fuse box, and they did wire power to the battery.

I was able to go to a Napa Auto Parts and got a 7-pin connector tester that beeped when you tried the various signals and brakes, which indicated everything was working fine. I was quite astonished. U-haul gave me the impression they didn't know wtf they were doing.

Hello,
Can anyone tell me where is the connection at the front for the brake controller? I had mine installed and they ran 2 cables from the driver kick panel to the back. So I am sure they have not used the 2021 pre-wired 7 pins harness.
Also there are 2 fuses in the fusebox for the trailer and even taking both of the do not unpower the controller and the 12v charging.
I would like to fix this but I have searched a lot and can’t find any information since months on where is supposed to be the connector in front of the vehicle.
I even bought the electric manual but it seems to be for the 2020 as there is no mention of that harness connector in it (bought it online in pdf specifically for the 2021 from manualsfactory).

One Major issue with the setup is that any braking action done by the car (adaptive cruise, collision avoidance) is not triggering the brake pedal signal and hence not the brake controller!!!!
thanks,
Fred

This post says it’s under the dash (I assume driver’s console) right behind the fuse box:
Post in thread 'Towing parts for Canadian Tellurides'
Towing parts for Canadian Tellurides

The four wire cabin pigtail that comes on the 2021 Kia Harness that plugs into that connector behind the fuse box has a red wire (#2) that has a stop input. I can't speak to collision avoidance, but I would not use smart cruise control while towing. I don't turn it on, but if I did, I might go into the options and turn off the smart cruise control and change it to a conventional cruise control so I can brake. Reference page 5-108 in the manual.

On page 5-121 Kia has this warning about using Adaptive/Smart Cruise Control when towing: "Do not use the Smart Cruise Con-trol function on steep inclines or when towing another vehicle or trailer since such extreme loading can interfere with your vehicle's ability to maintain the selected speed."

Hello,
thanks this post is what I was looking for! I will check as they have not done it this way and I am unhappy about it as they are not using the fuse from the fuse box under the hood! So not practical if anything happens!

For smart cruise control I have not seen this in the brochure :-) I always use the cruise control with the RV trailer and it helps a lot on fuel efficiency (I normally shift manually to avoid the truck to keep shifting with the Sorento but did one trip with the Telluride and it’s really smooth even on automatic). Huge improvement over the V6 Sorento.

What bugs me if emergency braking that would not send signal to trailer controller. I am thinking of using the upper middle brake light and use a PIC to get signals from brake pedal and the brake signal if automatic system brakes while also ensuring that if use the manual brake on the controller it will trigger braking light (and disengage cruise like if it hit brake pedal).

I think that they should have think about this.

Thanks,
Fred

There might be one advantage of a resetting breaker over the fuse, you don’t have to replace a blown fuse.

Sounds like you know what to look for. I had a TSB on my Telluride because the brake harness didn’t turn on the trailer brake lights if I used cruise control and the SCC used the brakes. They ended up fixing it and I assume did the same on the 2021s. When you say emergency brake, do you mean automatic brake from the radar or do you really want the ebrake to trigger the trailer brake? I assumed brake controllers don’t activate on ebrake and if you are on an incline use a wheel chock?

I do not think they put the auto resetting braker! They powered the brake controller and the 12v from a cable at the driver kick panel!

But the real fuse is 50A if using the one under the hood and brakes are using less than 10A so this is why I was hoping that they would use this feed and put in series the auto reset braker (25A) that I provided them.

Yes autobrake I am talking about the one from the radar. When using parking brake I do not want brake controller to be triggered too.

I get your frustration. If they tapped the stoplight switch on the cold side at the pedal that only gets voltage when the pedal is pressed. Sucks about the breaker too! Now I’m glad I have a 2020 to wire this up better myself and I’ll use an Echo so the brakes come on when I need them to.
