15,000 mile oil change

My Telly's 15,000 mile oil change was done/will be done at:

DIY'd my first oil change at 3,500 miles.
6.5Q Amsoil signature series - 5W30
Kia OEM filter
Fumoto SX drain plug.

Easy as pie.
I installed the plug as such that I never have to take off the skid plate again...yes I do just kidding to get the oil filter off.

Sure the oil change cost me $100ish but I took it for a spin and the engine is running like butter.
Might be different with the fumoto, but I am only adding 6.0 qts. when doing changes on my own, which is significantly less than the capacity in the manual.

Might be worth doing a double check on your dipstick to make sure you did not overfill.

I’ve found this to be the case on the changes I have done on my own.

I also despise the dipstick on this vehicle for how hard it is to read when you have clean, light colored oil.

Agreed on the dipstick.

I checked at 6Q and added some more slowly until I got to F on the dipstick.

This 👆

Start with 6 qts. and fill 'til the top dot (F).

I’m sitting right in the middle. 6.5 qt. sounds about right for the F mark. 👍

My mechanic dad always taught me to fill to halfway between the "L" and "F", just sayin'.

Everyone has to understand that a brand new oil filter is dry.

When you check the oil level right after an oil change that filter is going to slowly start soaking up all of that good new oil. The old school guys actually add oil right into the cartridge holder almost to the top and then fasten that back to the vehicle. Then they add the rest from the top.

What no one is asking is Kia def dropped the ball by saying 6.87Q because most of us are coming in less than that.

Hi guys! Newbie here! Gained a lot of insight on the Telly's maintenance just from this topic! Thanks! So, am I right to say that the consensus is: do frequent oil changes (maybe use the severe maintenance--3,500 miles) and top tier gas to counter act GDI's main weakness of sludge and carbon deposit build up on the intake valves? I think this is the right formula unless one decides the catch can approach. Or even better--do all three? I'm just concern about the Kia's warranty if we install catch can? How about installing the Fumoto valve for frequent oil changes but only changing the oil filter every other oil change? This will encourage more frequent oll changes for those DIYseflers without the hassle of removing the skid plate. Just a thought. Thanks.

I assume you've checked the dipstick after driving it for a bit and it is still full with less than 6.87q? I was thinking maybe the extra was being absorbed by the filter hence it would be a bit high immediately after the oil change until the engine was run and the oil was circulated.

Yes I've checked it and it's a hair less than F now after the filter soaked up it's fair share.

I still personally think people/dealers putting 6.87Q are overfilling. Not much harm as full synthetics are very thin oils.

I'm surmising from the thread that we can do our own oil changes on the Telluride without affecting the warranty. Is that true? All my other cars are BMWs, and I had/have to bring them in for maintenance to the dealer (which is included in the cost of the car) to maintain the warranty. After the warranty is done (this is now the case for all my BMWs except the M2) I do the maintenance myself.

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure that's the case.

So far the Mobil 1 Full Synthetic from the 15,000 mile oil change seems to be holding up and the Telly engine is running perfectly 🥳

Will stick with the Mobil 1 from now on.

Also, I've heard that the service interval for the 2022 Tellurides is 8000 miles.

Can anyone confirm this?

I've had three oil changes so far.

Here are the intervals the Kia dealer's service center have stuck on my tags for each:

1st- 3 mo - 3,000 mi
2nd- 5 mo - 5,000 mi
3rd- 6 mo - 6,000 mi
🤔

Seems to be a lack of continuity between what Kia recommends and what the service departments recommend. They put conventional oil in for my first oil change.

I'm sticking to DIY. Just received the Valvoline oil drain valve for easy, no mess oil changes. I've used Fumoto for 15 years on my Honda Pilot but it looks like it sticking out too far on Telly. Will change oil every 3k miles. Oil filter every other oil change. Using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5W30.

Curious why such a short interval for a synthetic oil? And why the filter every other?

The manual states the oil/filter change interval is 7500 miles or 12 months, which seems okay to me with synthetic oil. Being new to the brand, it is crazy to me that some Kia dealers are putting non-synthetic oil in...

That's why they want you to come back then between 3-5k miles for service. Keep changing it out and it's fine, even up to the recommended 7500mi. More business for them and the engine is running as it should.
You see a pattern? Some dealers use conventional, synthetic blend and full synthetic. Keep changing it regularly and it's all good. 👍

Yes, I'm just surprised how loose Kia is with what dealers use, as it is so regimented with BMW. Putting a non-synthetic oil (or even a synthetic oil that does not meet LL-01 spec) would put a BMW owner in significant danger of voiding the warranty if engine failure occurred. I figured that Kia dealers would all use the motor oil that Kia recommends, which I believe is Total Quartz synthetic 5W30...

Not too bad.

Yes, not too bad! I saw a different Fumote valve with a longer extension. Still waiting for the Valvoline valve (the package I received I now just opened is not that). But once I received and tried it on my Telly, I will make my decision. Attached is the Valvolne valve that I ordered (it's for 2020 Telly since they don't have the 2021 yet). Here's a link--https://www.valvomax.com/pages/product-result?steps=35253-35567-35632&wizardId=22. Thanks.
