Bad Dealer Dealings - List Your Bad Dealer Experience

Ouch I think I'll Wait till the market calms down I'm never going to pay over MSRP for a vehicle. Because when the market crashes you're going to lose a lot of money

Dealership : Hilltop Kia
Sales Manager: Raoul Fulcher Jr.

Was super excited today when I was told by Hilltop Kia that my car arrived. When I was signing the paperwork, I was only asked about the down payment and shown just one sheet with the monthly payments. The payments looked high and so I asked for the breakdown. At this point, the they started becoming agitated, brought me the breakdown and I noticed a 4K markup and 3.5% APR. I was shocked and said that over the phone the markup has been mentioned but only for “new orders” but not for existing orders and that I was told it’s 1.9% APR. At this point the salesperson Raoul started saying that he had witnesses that he informed me about the markup in May, 7 months after I placed the order (which to the best of my recollection was that he mentioned is only for new orders, not existing). He took the keys and said he doesn’t want to sell the car to me and started walking away. I was dumbfounded. Then his manager Shawn pitched-in and when I said I’m willing to pay a 2k markup, sold the car to me.

A $4k 10yr 100k extended warranty was also added. I did take the $3k 6yr 75m warranty at my discretion but am thinking about canceling both warranties for better options.

I absolutely love the car but left the dealership feeling cheated.

Anyone waiting on cars from Hilltop Kia, please note that they are going to charge a $4k markup. I believe for vehicles that are not ordered and in their lot it’s 8k.

Let me know if your recent experience was different.

Folks, I believe the 3.5% rate is what you get if you want the $500 cash back from KMF. If you’re going to pay it off early, that makes sense. Or you can get a lower rate (1.9%) but no cash back. The dealers should be explaining that to you. Our college student just purchased a Seltos (great vehicle, btw) and that’s how it was explained to us. It was unchanged from when we purchased the Telluride from the same dealer back in January. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

That’s correct and it’s a $300 cash back now at 3.5% APR. Would have appreciated if I was appraised of both by them without me asking.

Hilltop Kia of Richmond, CA I think now belongs on this list. Heads up to the California peeps, Moe responded saying they now want a $5,000 markup over MSRP. Their current orders will receive MSRP but they will no longer do orders. I don't know if that's a temporary halt to orders but that was Moe's response.
I picked up my vehicle today and I was told there is a $4k markup for current orders as well. I negotiated (rather pleaded) and got it for a $2k markup. After waiting for 9 months there is nothing much you can do.

Sorry that left a bad taste in your mouth. I'd be outraged as well, and unsure of how to handle that on the spot (and risk losing your Telly you've been waiting 9 months for!). Hopefully as the days pass you're just enjoying the Telluride and know to never go back there.

Agree. There are definitely some shady dealers out there. Have to be an informed consumer these days.

Got quoted $39k for a 2022 S trim from Cape Coral Florida KIA on their website and also called to confirm with their GM, Carl. I asked if there was a market adjustment or any add ons and what the final price was. Drove an hour down there to trade in my car and when I got there the price magically jumped to $52k with a $12k market adjustment and other nonsense. I questioned it and seriously was told the decision was made that morning to add that. This was after they offered me $14k under the trade in amount for my car. I laughed in the dudes face and walked away and ordered from Matt with Kia of Columbia MO at MSRP plus $200 doc fee with 6-8 week delivery time. KIA of Cape Coral are a bunch of vultures and deserve zero sales from any sane buyer.

yeah, this is the first Kia I have ever owned and I wanted the Telluride because I do know a few people who have them and absolutely love them and based on all the reviews I have read and research I have done, it checked mostly all the boxes as far as features go. I scheduled an appointment to go look at the vehicle and test drive it, mind you I have to drive an hour out of my way to look at this vehicle. I get to this dealership and I walk in at my designated time, there was no one there to greet me so I walked into the next room and find a front desk. As I am walking up to it I am stopped by a sales rep and I explain that I had an appointment to look at the Telluride and everything. We go for a test drive and he seemed to be pretty educated about it which was nice so I played along and let him do his thing. During the test drive I knew that this vehicle was probably going home with me. however, I did tell him I wanted the SX in Wolf Gray. The sales rep tells me that this vehicle was the only one on their lot and there is no way for them to get the vehicle due to the shortage that is going on and they don't know what will be coming to their lot or when and they can't do any dealer to dealer trades. Fine. I didn't want to do black again but whatever. Cut to us going over paperwork, the vehicle is MSRP'd at 32k but the paperwork he brought to me stated that it was 46k because of market sales adjustment. I had a huge problem with paying an extra 19k for a base model vehicle. I did however get a 5k discount on the market sales adjustment due to the vehicle not being the trim or color I wanted. I still had an issue with paying the extra 14k and sat there at that dealership for 7 hours and finally got that down to just 7k. I know the sales rep was so annoyed with me by the end of it but damn. I ended up just leasing the vehicle because again, it wasn't what I wanted but I was in need of a reliable vehicle so I felt like I didn't have much choice in the matter. But yeah, 19k over the MSRP is ridiculous. don't let those dealerships fool you when they tell you they can't bring that price down because they definitely did for me.

$7K over the MSRP is ridiculous. Yeah, you did have a choice. Sorry, my opinion.

Yes there is. Walk away. Waited 9 months, you can probably wait a little longer.

Agreed. This is no deal.

Taylor Kia in Toledo is charging $10k over right now. I’m so confused why people are paying that when Halleen, which is an hour down the road, is selling at MSRP…

My personal assumption is that the people paying the markups are 1) coming off a lease and need the car ASAP 2) people who get sick of their cars after 1-3 years and must have the latest and the greatest.

Asking from Florida who might have to change dealers as well. How are they handling delivery, tag and tax? I am finding the 2k mandatory maintenance pkg. insane. Decided to just file a complaint with attorney general after purchase.

I wanted to keep my marriage intact😂😂
Had to fight with wife to wait instead of going for a Pallisade.

Quick update for Hilltop Kia Orders.

After leaving an Yelp review the owner gave a call and apologized and offered to pay me back the $2k.

For the benefit of others I asked him what the policy was and he told that all existing orders placed at Hilltop Kia that were promised at MSRP will be delivered at MSRP. The new orders have the markup.

Also, if Raoul or Shawn are your sales person, be extra careful and ask for the price breakup, window sticker, apr and warranty info before signing any documentation.

Moe seems to be genuine from the reviews I’ve read.

Glad to see that it all worked out well once your critical review went out in Yelp. Aa they say, “the squeaky wheel…”

On a FWD LX, no less? In a color he didn't want? This is really gonna sting after a good night's sleep.

If you need a car today, the dealer will always have the upper hand, but the Telluride at this point in time is the worst car to buy this way.

Glad I found the group. It has helped with the search quite a bit.

Vanguard Kia of Arlington, TX
Sales: Gregory Lewis

I was "offered" $79,999 for a Telluride SX-P AWD.

Was more likely an "F you" as it was an internet query and a text based conversation and I was actually asking questions about their price and ordering structure.

I wonder if this was their OTD price. :)
